I'll change the question because I would have a hard time picking a best. But if someone was new to Death Metal and wanted me to give them one album they should own I would probably say:
Morbid Angel are the greatest satanic/occult band black or death metal band that ever was.... And they were REAL.... Now , we have fakes that pretend for their friends.... They need to be crushed

Not that they are the best DM albums ever, but I'd say Obituary - Cause of Death and Cannibal Corpse - Tomb of the Mutilated, just cause they are the first two death metal albums I ever bought. RIP Record Town.

cause of death is one of my favorite death metal albums for sure.
also, if anyone lists ANY malevolent creation album except MAYBE the 10 commandments, YOOTB
The Ten Commandments rules but how could anyone neglect Retribution? That album is fucking vicious.
Now this is a tough choice to make... Atrocity - Hallucinations, Demilich - Nespithe, Mortal Decay - Forensic, Disgorge - She Lay Gutted...
So many more, so difficult to choose.

Tough call here, lots of classic death metal albums that I dig. A lot of good ones mentioned. Nice to see Impetigo's Horror Of The Zombies get a mention, that's a fucking unheralded classic if I've ever heard one. "Wizard Of Gore" has one of the catchiest, grooviest riffs I've heard in a death metal song.
Entombed's Clandestine is a good call too, I would be inclined to agree, however, I just can't get it out of my admittedly too vivid imagination how much better that album would have been if L.G. had sang instead of Nick. I know it ain't all that productive to get hung up on "what if's", but still...Nick handled the vocals as best he could, the riffs and songs are AWESOME. Add Lars Goran to the mix, I think that would have been the best DM album of all time.
The first two Dismember albums are no slouch either, tough for me to choose between Like An Ever Flowing Stream and Indecent And Obscene, both have their merits. First two Grave albums, the first Unleashed, all on about the same par.
Death's Leprosy and Incantation - Onward To Golgotha both get regular play from me, another two I'd say are some of the best. Good calls there.
The first two Morbid Angel and the first two Immolation albums have a great balance of technicality, challenging arrangements, unexpected twists, etc. Classics.
Cannibal Corpse is an easy target, although I'll stand by Tomb Of The Mutilated. That still had the raw energy of the early lineup, and they pushed the envelope the best they could on that one.
I'll also give props to Ten Commandments, honestly, that was the only Malevolent Creation I ever got into.
Obituary's Cause Of Death probably has my favourite riffs of any DM album, and the James Murphy solos don't hurt its "cause" either.
Good call on Demilich - Nespithe, that album sounds like it was recorded on another planet.
Not a Death Metal afficionado by any stretch of the imagination, so I will just agree with the mentions of Incantation, Dismember, and Suffocation, and call it a day
How are you a so called death thrash metal band and yet bring nothing but pizza to the table? Pizza ruined hardcore, dont let it ruin death thrash too.

and even though it's technically "funeral doom" or whatever you want to call it, it deserves honorable mention in a thread about death metal, since it's one of the top crowning achievements in all of metal.
pre- ABITNS darkthrone is pretty death metal IMHO.
also i totally meant that entrench album to be repugnant, epitome of darkness, i always get those two bands confused for some weird reason even tho the only thing they have in common is country of origin
Just downloaded the Dementor album. Right up my alley. Killer stuff.
yea I'm not familiar with the band, but I remember picking that tape up in 99 when it came out and thinking it was killer, and recently busted it out again. cracked out morbid angel from slovakia. have heard some of their other stuff, wasn't impressed.
some runners up not mentioned:
Necrony - Pathological Performances
Pungent Stench - Been Caught Buttering
Dismember - Like an Ever Flowing Stream
Therion - Of Darkness
Excruciate - Passage of Life
Adramalech - Psychostasia (KEVORD if you havn't already heard)

my favorite Death album, by far the angriest!

Always thought Spiritual Healing was the best Death album too. It's sooo fucking negative, and the music is teetering on the edge between the early shit and the nerdier shit.
Necrony album kicks ass, especially the jazz solos (WTF???).
mentioning pyrexia in a 'best death metal' thread is like mentioning scott from Xasthur in a "people who have never contributed to graveside service" thread.
Since I see people are straying away from the thread topic, I might as well throw in my preferences without worry of being judged too poorly for personal thoughts on the best death metal album(s) of all time.
I just think these guys have taken what was done before them, and made it better.

that Cannibal Corpse album is chalky and unpleasant! I will DESTROY YOU!

Scott Has contributed to 3 albums worth of material and his bass work was incredible .
