Summation:
iTunes doesn't work with independent artists directly.
Pretty much, you work with an online distributor. They mention CD Baby and TuneCore and they put your stuff on iTunes and other places.

Honestly, I'd go the bandcamp route. I think all you need is a PayPal account and you can sell your tracks at any price and any quality.
