Wow, you like Always? Isn't that with the dude singer? I really only like there stuff from Mandylion on. Surprisingly enough, The Gathering is probably the only band besides Tool that's been in my playlist consistently for over a decade.

Popularized? If you're talking about Europe, then sure; but they sure as shit ain't poopular here. I saw em two or so years ago at the middle east and it wasn't even close to sold out... yet they fill stadiums in Europe.... and "Evanescence" and "Lacuna Coil" get big here.. OBVIOUS rip-offs of the Gathering. "How to Measure a Planet" is one of the best ambient-folk-rock records ever. |

Yeah, Jim, you're misinterpreting my use of that word, as it applies to them. What I mean by popularized relates to their evolution in style and the material that they became revered for, amongst their fans. I don't think in terms of mainstream popularity when it comes to a band like this. The Gathering are known to people who purchase albums from say, Century Media, Nuclear Blast, and the like. |

lol, poopular |
|
he said poop.
Mike-
No i didn't misunderstand, i just like pointing out that in Europe they get the respect they deserve, and here they get a half empty mid-east. |
|
that's because europe has way better bands and way better fans |
|
a couple european bands have told me differently, grass is always browner. |
|
also, Drudkh - Forgotten Legends and Wardruna - Runaljod: Gap Var Ginnunga, and new Asphyx, mixed in with random psytrance is all i've been listening to lately. I listened to the Half-life 2 soundtrack last night by Kelly Bailey and I plan on spinning that a lot more. |
|
Fans are usually irrelevant. They either stand there looking bored or they act like knuckle-dragging morons. As far as music is concerned, America has its share of great bands, but overall, Europe schools us. |
|
Baroness - Blue Record
Infernal Stronghold - Godless Noise LP
Bukkake Boys - Splendid Thoughts 7"
Saviours 3 new 7"s
Black Sabbath - Sabotage LP
|
|
I kind of disagree. I think on a general scale the fans in europe are more dedicated to metal and mroe into it. Irrelevant that may seem to some; but let's take a hypothetical situation:
if you're a beer snob talking to what you'd think was another beer snob, and then start talking about stuff like the difference between double bocks and abbey tripel ales and the other person acts like they know what you're talking about, then they're not a beer snob.
every european metalhead i've talked to was well educated in metal, liked both classics and new stuff, and were all around easier to talk to. in other words, they knew their shit. they seem to appreciate metal moreso than americans.
but then again, that doesn't really matter. I guess you're right. it's not about fans or other people. |
|
Well, when I say they're irrelevant, I'm speaking more in terms of my experiences at shows. Crowd reactions can enhance or ruin a particular show. When I watch live videos shot in Europe, the fans seem to barely even nod their heads; they look rather disinterested. I'm sure it's not like that everywhere, but whatever. |
|
i know what you mean. that's why I can't stand going to the palladium anymore, regardless of what show is there (i'll make a few exceptions). but the crowd there EVERYTIME kills it for me. it's hard for me to even get into the band playing due to the brainless drones that attend those shows. smaller, more intimate venues are key, and less 13 year olds is key as well.
it's almost as bad as when you go to a non-metal concert and there's some fat couple dancing in front of you acting like no one is behind them. GET OUT OF THE WAY YOU'RE RUINING THE SHOW |
|
bah, that's why you and i have an advantage. our line of sight is above them all. i don't pay attention to anyone at shows, except for those weirdos that dance completely devoid of rhythm, and inch ever closer to you no matter how much space is in front of them. |

Our songs for The Exploited cover set, over and over. |

what do you think of the new baroness record rooster? |
I really like it. It seems like a natural progression from The Red Album.
If you're expecting it to be heavier, like "First" and "Second", you might be disappointed, because it's not. It is however, very well written, densely layerd, SUPER fuzz'd out, and much more "rock" sounding than their previous material.
Don't get me wrong, it is heavy, but in a different way (whatever that means).
It has really really BIG riffs, the vocals are more raw, as is the overall production. You can really hear the recording space in the mix, big roomy drums.... much less polished than the Red Album, so in that respect, it's more like the earlier material.
There's even an acoustic song with clean vocals, which threw me off a little at first, but in context with the rest of the album, it's a great song.
Lot of talent with these guys. Even when they throw curve-balls stylistically, it's cool, and they make it work, unlike some bands who fall flat on their face when they attempt a shift in their sound.
I highly recommend checking it out. I just wish Relapse was releasing it on vinyl. |
|
yeah i dl'd the leak as well and REALLY enjoy it...been pretty much all ive listened to lately, just curious as to someone elses opinion. i pretty much agree with everything you said actually.
the acoustic bit def threw me off at first also but honestly i find myself singing that in my head more than almost any other part on the album.
i must say i like the drumming slightly less on this album (though its still solid as shit and is perfect for the songs) compared to the red album. i think a lot of the albums more "rock" vibe stems from the much more straightforward drumming style he uses. still sounds great just seems a bit less intricate than the red album |

Funny about the "singing" in your head comment... I've been walking around with a couple of the songs stuck in my head.
Very catchy tunes, and I like that they've developed into better singers.
I can't say I like the drumming any less, but I did notice that he toned it down a bit for this one. He's an incredible drummer. Always in the pocket, even when he's doing crazy shit.
Hell of a nice guy too. They played at the venue where I do live sound last year, and I got to hang out with him a bit after their set. |
|
yeah, the harmonized vocals are really great, they def went out of their comfort zone as far as hitting higher notes and more complex vocal melodies and did so without losing the grit and emotion in the vocals (*cough*mastodon*cough*)
i hadnt really listened to Baroness much before my band opened for them a couple years ago but i was totally blown away watching their set. really phenominal band, especially live. |

Had a similar experience.
I had never heard them prior to that aforementioned show at Valentines, and my mind was thoroughly blown when they played. Me and their touring sound guy were literally rocking out behind the board. It was awesome.
Since then, they've become one of my favorite bands.
What's your band? |
|
one of my favs as well. their discography gets at least a couple plays a week for me.
my band is Spewtilator. atlanta based thrash/grind type stuff
myspace.com/spewtilator
all our stuff is fast except for one song that has a real slow doom/sludge intro...so we thought it would be funny to open our set with it considering who we were opening for. after our set john baizley came up and was like "man, when you guys started i thought you were gonna be another shitty sludge band but then...BAM, it was all awesome thrashing and death metal!" Super nice guy, as were all the guys in the band. Def felt good to hear that he was stoked on it. |
|
