I up'd my 2.13 E6400 duocore for a 2.83 Q9550
First off, 32-bit vista doesn't boot anymore. I'm going to install 64-bit vista tomorrow. so I'm comparing a run on 32-bit vista (c2d) with a run on 32-bit xp (c2q).

3000 pictures
vista 32-bit 2.13ghz E6400 took 47 minutes to process
xp 32-bit 2.83ghz Q9550 took 29 minutes to process

I'm going to tweak on xp 32-bit and run again.
then load it in to 64-bit win7 and try again.

testing out nerd vs. more nerd

toggletoggle post by porphyria at Jun 17,2009 10:23pm
why the hell are you running 32-bit vista anyways?

Very good question.

Are you going to post charts and graphs? I love that shit. It looks so fucking tight.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 17,2009 11:04pm
cause the CD was suppose to be 64-bit or 32-bit vista and it was just 32-bit.
I'm getting 64-bit tomorrow.
I have 7gb of RAM... so...

I just got sharing working on a computer for carina. ATOM 330 book with 2x1tb internal running ubuntu off a 16gb tumb drive.
plus, 1xtb external and 2x500gb external.
low power NAS rules.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 17,2009 11:23pm
just did a few more things and got it to process the pictures in 27 minutes.
rebooting to run in 64-bit win7

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 18,2009 12:03am
win7 seems to be working so much better. the CPU is pegged at 100% which is a good sign. It's taking 30 seconds per but instead of 4 pictures @ 6-12 seconds, it's processing 30 pictures at a time at 30 seconds each.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 18,2009 12:12am
it settled into 17 seconds.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 18,2009 8:00am
win7 took 33 minutes, but locked the computer more.

toggletoggle post by reimroc at Jun 18,2009 8:11am
i've got my E8500 running @ 3.8 on air.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 18,2009 8:15am
I could run the q9550 at 3.4ghz, but I think I would need a better heat sink + fan which won't fit in my case. I only have about and inch leeway above the retailfan if that.

toggletoggle post by darkwor  at Jun 18,2009 8:44am
pushed my q9450 to 3GHz and aside from getting a new video card for sli later (nvidia 9800gt) i don't think i'll need to upgrade for 10 years.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 18,2009 9:32am
oh and I'm running vista at all cause I have a 16TB partition on my drobo and xp doesn't support over 2TB partitions.

You probably wont. I'm running 2x8800GTsupers in sli on a mobo thats tri-sli ready and i still chew up and spit out games.

I've been thinking about getting a 1/2gb or 1gb ddr3 card, but I think I would need a new power supply. right now, if I install another hard drive it won't boot cause of lack of power.

toggletoggle post by reimroc at Jun 18,2009 10:50am
you will be fine with 500w and up if its a good name like corsair or cooler-master.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 18,2009 11:00am
but I doubt a 500w will fit in my case.

toggletoggle post by reimroc at Jun 18,2009 11:06am
get a full-tower. you need it anyways if you plan on running any 8x/9x series cards.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 18,2009 11:16am
no way. I like my little case and if I were to get a full tower, I would have gone i7 and not micro-atx 775. I also sure as fuck wouldn't build my own PC anymore. I would buy a $699 dell that would be better than any pos that I put together.

toggletoggle post by reimroc at Jun 18,2009 11:38am edited Jun 18,2009 11:38am
lol rev its not hard to build you're own pc. it saddens me that you would stoop to buying some pre-built POS Dell. But hey if you like your micro-atx for what you use it for then thats all good. But if you plan on any time building a full-time stay at home, do not move desktop PC then do full-tower and build that beast yourself.

I have built countless shitty home computers for the past 13 years. they never work right and the last computer I built took almost 2 years, 2 motherboards, 3 sets of RAM, and a billion os's to get working. All of my dells once the bloat-ware is removed are charging like racehorses. I have a farm of 800Mhz machines that haven't hickuped in 8 years. a P4 optiplex that has been cranking builds for years with no issues. I'm typing on a D620 latitude that is 3+ years old and keeps up with most modern lappies. I also have a 5 year old 700m latitude that is running strong.
dells are great and cheaper than building your own machine. plus, they work.

toggletoggle post by reimroc at Jun 18,2009 11:57am
i never had a problem building my own rig. next time consult me and i will help you.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 18,2009 12:03pm
that exactly what everyone says and then they try to help and make matters worse.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 18,2009 12:04pm
my machine 2 before the current, if you opened the case at all, it wouldn't start up again for 2 weeks. Then it would magically start after 2 weeks of rest and work until you open the case again.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 18,2009 12:05pm
oh and I semi-lied. the P4 optiplex used to not weather power failures well and then would lock up on boot. but after a new image it worked fine.

wut?

Maybe you have bad luck?

toggletoggle post by reimroc at Jun 18,2009 12:08pm
Its either bad luck or you're using the wrong brands(shitty) or the wrong components(non-compatible)

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 18,2009 12:10pm
or maybe there is a reason I don't get paid to build computers and bench monkeys in india do. I didn't build my car for a reason. I'm not building a computer again.
though since I originally said that I build that atom 330 machine for carina.

toggletoggle post by reimroc at Jun 18,2009 12:12pm
I want to get to the bottom of this. How the hell can so many custom machines fuck up on you? Must sleuth.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 18,2009 12:16pm
cause building your own machine is shitty.
My current desktop works well, but like I said, that is after almost 2 years, 2 motherboards, 3 sets of RAM, and a billion os's. Also, if I move the RAM, it wont work. the only way it works is if I have a specific 1GB in slot 3 and a 2GB in slot 1. the 1GB has to be 800Mhz I think. The others don't matter. That took a few nights to work out.

toggletoggle post by reimroc at Jun 18,2009 12:32pm
interesting....

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 18,2009 12:48pm
it's like when someone makes a car. "Oh the thing is mint.. but you have to put it in reverse, feather the gas and pat the dash with the radio off to get it to start."

rofl awesome metaphor.
