New site? Maybe some day.
I am going to try a used one tonight -- apparently they want $500 for it. Thoughts on this head? Pros/Cons? I would be playing it out of 2 Line 6 4x12s (slant & straight). I can't really justify buying an Engl or VHT right now -- I don't see myself playing out a ton in the future, just some practice space jamming and possibly some studio shite.

VHT Deliverance with a buy-it-now of 1000.

The XXX isn't bad. I thought Nick got a good tone with it in Dysentery. And when Cav used one in my old band I thought it did what it did very well. But it would never be on a top 10 if I were looking to buy an amp.
But for $500, that is a good deal. If you can get Nick talking on this, he'll have more experienced input. I know there are some things on the back of the amp that are essentially "make this sound good/make this sound shitty" switches without being properly named as such. |
Great amp with solid power rating. Def filled up my vaders nice.
Very modern gain structure.
I wont tell you how to tweak it, but rather, I will tell you it is pretty 'tweakable.' MIDS ARE GARBAGE THOUGH. very 'honkey' as blue and I used to say...in that the mids are pretty undynamic.
Tightness and dampening switch in the back is nice it def will control / reign in it's token 'buzziness,' which some find unacceptable.
The two preamp controls in the back def add some extra heat depending on your settings and pref. Joe from MDK and I pretty much had the same settings..I def enjoyed my time with the amp and it served me well.
One caveat is that it can be incredibly noisy without a gate or hush or deci.

Thanks, men. I'll look forward to messing with it tonight.
That's a good price for that VHT. |
500-600 dollars is pretty standard for a used one.
Pros: It's got some volume to give.
Cons: The sound.
I've never heard a peavey amp I like. This goes double for a xxx.
We used one on the rohis recordings. myspace.com/rohis |

what about valveking, don't like that sound either? |
I'm not a fan of the valve king either.
You can make that amp sound like so many different things, but none of them are what i like in a tone. |

its because you use emgs.......neener neener |
So I should expect my emgs to make a horrendous din through this head? |
no, but you will find an excess of high end (which is the case a lot of the time with emgs)
try to weasel it down to 450 cus youll probably have to get a new set of tubes for it. thatd be a solid deal. |
Yeah, and it sounds like I would need some type of noise gate, too, so I'll put on my yamika (sp?) and knock him down a bit. |
*yarmulke
(weird, right?) |
I have EMGs in one guitar.
When I played and recorded through the XXX, I was using a Moser Custom Shop with a Dimarzio X2n. |

wait, you got rid of the 13 other see through black mh-400s you had?
just messin wif ya. |
I luff chu blue. I luff chu. |
XXX....ehh.
Peavey XXX's either sound like they have the 'presence' knob cranked, or the mids all scooped, and no in between.
I CAN HAZ XXX.
I bought it -- I like the tone, it's not perfect, but it's a major step up from where I was. I look forward to fucking with the thing and seeing what I can get out of it. |
get some JJ bottles in there, and throw a booster and eq pedal into the mix.
That will give you some good headroom to play around with. |
JJs are the secret to taming peaveys shrill highs. |
mmm... JJs
I'm buying a Peavey Classic 400 this weekend! |
Got me some JJ 6L6's and Tung SOL preamp tubes in me Peavey Valveking, Arrrrr.
I think JJs sound dull. Didn't really like the way they sounded in my ENGL. But I guess that's what Peavy's require. |
