three "national acts" and a local seem more than enough.

Because it helps create exposure for bands trying to expand their fanbase to people who only go to shows with national act headliners and don't know and/or care about local shows.

well said mike it's one of the reasons i hate when bands list what time they are going on cause it make their fan show up to see them and then they leave i see this alot where as if you don't know what time the band is going on you may catch a band you never heard of but actually dig

i know people and was in a band where one of the members would purposly show up after "the shitty local bands were done" just to avoid seeing em i hate that shit

The "local scene" is the heart of metal. No matter where you're going or where you've been you're still local to somewhere. Every band was a "shitty local band" at some point. It's so hard to grow no matter how hard you hunt for breaks, especially when people think that way.
