I got into the groove of watching 3 movies a day again....post reviews so I know what to watch.

Indy Game - Interesting documentary about making independent video games. I loved how they talked about the esthetics gaming, the fine details of contracting levels/maps. What didn't like was watching a few nerds flip out when something goes wrong (Phil Fish/Fez) or how they bitch about working a shit ton(yeah guy, you're fucking self employed, get used to it!) because I found how they dealt with their problems to be completely laughable. 3.5 outta 5

Amadeus - I've put this one off for awhile but it was cool. Long but never really dry. I was kinda bummed at how accessible they made the film (english spoken in Vienna/a campy tweeny vibe) but in the end I think they're trying to show Mozart as the first ever rock star, so to say. Beautiful scenes at the opera though. 3 outta 5

Lynching Charlie Lynch - Good doc about this dude who opened a dispensary in Northern California who got raided by the feds and charged with a buncha shit. Wicked normal, harmless dude on the wrong side of the law. Informative and eye opening. Nothing ground breaking but probably the most humane look at pot ever. 3.5 outta 5

Mansome - Documentary by those dudes from Arrested Development. Whole thing talks about male appearance relating to sexuality and how serious us dudes take it. Everything from the world champion beard growing competition in Austria to some disgusting metrosexual who shaves his body. Didn't really get anything out of it other than the cool feature on the beard competition, that dude Jack Passion is a tool. 2 outta 5

Ladies and Gentlemen, Mr. Leonard Cohen - Fucking stellar. Short 70 min doc from Canada in the 70s in black and white. Focused mainly on Cohen's poetry and nightlife. Wicked inspiring words, guy. 4 outta 5

Jiro Dreams of Sushi - Fucking beautiful doc here. Jap subtitles but just fucking gorgeous film work. This dude makes sushi for like all his life at his little 9 seat restaurant where the minimum charge is like $300 to sit down and eat a 15 min meal and you gotta book this shit like months in advance too. Hard work and discipline are elite Japanese virtues here. 4.5 outta 5

Being Elmo - This was actually pretty cool and I honestly feel terrible for Kevin Clash after watching this. Dude devotes his whole life to making puppets because he's that inspired by Jim Henson, works his whole life to meet Henson, gets hired by him to work on Dark Crystal and later Sesame Street and then becomes one of the most renowned puppeteers ever. 4 outta 5

One Night in Turin - This year I've gone out of my way to pursue watching English Football(fuck you Red Sox and Bruins, why do I still have nesn?) and this was a killer doc on the 1990 English World Cup run. The most humanizing look at hooliganism I've ever seen. Killer highlights from across time. Nice focal points on international stars. Gary Oleman narrating, it's just awesome, I'm a supporter. 4.5 outta 5

Thanks for this. I spend 2 hours a night trying to figure out what to watch. I thought Amadeus was a solid 4.5 / 5 because of the acting. But it dragged on. Chevk out the "Ip Man" movies

Ip Man 1 4.5 outta 5. solid kung fu Chinese movie. If you can get past the difference between chinese and american filmmaking, a solid watch.
Slingblade is also on netflix if you haven't seen it yet. 4.5 outta 5. Awesome acting by billy bob thornton.

The Hunter - 4 outta 5. Really good movie about an endangered species being hunted in Tasmania.

"the legion" 3.5 outta 5. Not bad, not excellent.. But a solid movie about Roman expansion in what is now known as Scotland and England. Britannia.

SPEAKING OF MARTIAL ARTS MOVIES

Story of Riki aka Riki-Oh - HOLY FUCK. Scott from !!!TENTACLES!!! recommended we watch this at O'Briens last Friday and the bartender put it on...FUCKING AWESOME. OVER THE TOP. Originally based off a graphic novel!?! The best gore in martial arts I've ever seen and I didn't really watch it all, just bits in pieces. Can't really leave a score but first impressions were astounding.

Fully backed on Ip Man. Didn't know there was more than one.

Fire in the Sky is on Netflix. One of the best alien movies of all time. The abduction scene still holds up mightily to this day.

"Message from Space" - Toho's attempt to cash in on the success of "Star Wars." Super corny, and looks pretty much how you'd expect.

"Starcrash" - Roger Corman's attempt to cash in on the success of "Star Wars." Much more corny and incoherent than "Message From Space," to the point of being almost unwatchable. I gave up on this one halfway through.


Funny thing about these movies: they both feature multiple shots that are exactly stolen from the opening of "Star Wars." Total cargo cult film making: "We're not really sure what makes this incredibly huge movie tick, but we're going to assume it's something about filming the bottom of a space ship as it flies by." Definitely puts perspective on how ahead of their time Star Wars' design and special effects were.

Oh: both those movies get 0 stars, and the Force have mercy on your soul if you sit through either one.

Was bummed when I started to watch Old Boy and only the dubbed version was available. Watched Evil Dead instead for nostalgia.

This and the Isle of Wight concert video are both phenomenal.

Omega Man - Charlton Heston bombing around in a post apocalyptic world wasting creepo cult people and inspiring White Zombie samples. Way cool until it turns into a story about him falling in love with this black chick.

Bronson - Rad British film semi based on a true story about a guy who makes a name for himself as England's most famous prisoner by clobbering guards and being a dick wherever he goes. Chill soundtrack too.

That movie was fantastic but it made feel like a piece of shit who is wasting my life.

Riki-Oh is amazing. Alex & BSV - For more over-the-top Asian violence, I'd recommend Tokyo Gore Police as well. Different genre, but same level of insanity.

Restrepo - The dude who wrote the perfect storm goes to Afghanistan and gets embedded for a few months in the K Valley. Never understood the combat terrain until I saw this 4.5/5

Also, Restrepo was really eye opening. Changes how you think about the war, in a nuts and bolts kind of way.

Wild and Wonderful Whites was awesome.

I thought Restrepo was only ok and could have been done better.

Hell - post-apocalyptic German sci-fi, like a 3-way split between "the Road," "Book of Eli," and "Texas Chainsaw Massacre." Super bleak, and not actually gory even though it keeps seeming like it's about to go that way.

Sleep Dealers - dystopian Mexican sci-fi. Also very bleak, but more ambitious and message-oriented than "Hell." I guess I don't think it worked quite as well overall, which isn't surprising since they were tackling big issues like globalization, technology, and exploitation instead of just "after the shit goes down, most people will become total dicks except for a few that won't."

Cronocrimenes - Spanish time-traveling sci-fi. Super stark and low-budget, but they pull it off because the story is so tightly focused in spite of the obvious paradoxical plot twists it throws at you.

i watched this a few months ago. The scenes where he's on the stage are really weird, but watching him beat the shit out of everyone is entertaining as fuck.

I wanted to like "Bronson," but it just felt completely pointless. It felt like the only thing the moviemakers got out of this dude's totally crazy life story was "here are some striking visual images."

"Valhalla Rising" was pretty much the same thing. Refn would make a great music video director, but doesn't seem to understand the concept of "plot." Although I guess I have heard the Pusher movies were better. So maybe he just...forgot how to tell a coherent story?

I remember checking that film out after seeing praise here and elsewhere. Ended up shutting it off after 40 minutes or so.

Seriously. Up until they get in the boat it'd be one of the all time great metal videos, right up there with "Passion of the Christ."

I actually hate watching most movies, that's why most of them are docs. The 30 for 30 films are all about 50 min long and the majority were viewed throughout July and August. Plus I'm not working nearly as much I should be these days/not buying as much music as normal leads to other sources of media.

Trek Nation - total Star Trek circle-jerk about Roddenberry's non-trekker son going out to see why people love his dad's show so much, a lot of original footage and decent interviews, and a lot of stuff you'd already know. I can only really recommended it for Trek fans.

The Football Factory's a fun, stupid little movie if you're looking for more hooligan antics. Great soundtrack too.

The last good thing I watched on Netflix was The American Scream. It's a documentary about three families in Massachusetts that turn their houses into haunted attractions on halloween. I liked it a lot. It's from the same guy who made Best Worst Movie.

I really liked S&Man and I remember it being on Netflix streaming. It's 3/4 a real docu about underground horror directors (including Bill Zebub) and 1/4 a staged docu that's blended in with the real footage. Creepy with a slow build, even if the fictional aspects don't grab you there's a lot of fun in the interview segments.

FACT: 'Quest for Fire' is the best movie on netflix right now.

Just got into Doctor Who circa 2005. Dig it. Reminds me of watching it on PBS in the early to mod 80s. Just finished S2:e4.

You have just started the 10th doctor my friend. David Tennant is the greatest doctor. I almost teared up when his run as the doctor ended. I envy you for getting to experience it for the first time.

Matt Smith is alright. Last half season was cool. But the season before was horrible. I'm glad Amy Pond and Rory are dead. The new companion seems like she'll be cool.

Yeah so far Doctor #10 is pretty damn good.

Daleks are the best things ever. They look like evil R2D2s, buy sound like C3PO if he was a pissed off soccer hooligan with a water-damaged voice box. Fantastic.

Beyond the Black Rainbow - 80s style sci-fi/slasher movie with some incredibly weird visuals and sound. The guy behind it described it as his attempt to make what, as a kid, he thought the movies he wasn't allowed to rent (on VHS) were like. I'd strongly recommend it to you guys even if it didn't have two wasted dudes ("fat hesher" and "skinny hesher") blasting Venom in the woods towards the end.
