Obvi, I'm sure there will be tribute albums and much pac love. You can expect that if anyone who made some hit records croaked.

You think a bunch of bling bling inner city black guys would have the balls to admit the music they participate in was influenced by some scrawny white Jewish NYC kids in the 80s?

The argument here is how they affected the development of a genre. I think the counter argument has no reason to be said. You're a fool for not realizing their importance. Give it up.

Okay, with my asshole statement out of the way, the Beastie Boys were something I listened to and took enjoyment in as a kid. The news did startle me for a second because I hadn't heard anything about the guy's cancer, but when it comes down to it, the music just hasn't been relevant to me in ages. I briefly considered going back and listening to some of it but so much more of me was just like "nahhhh" that I didn't bother.

47/48 is too young to die.

Licensed to Ill ('86) was the first "rap" album to reach no.1 on US Billboards.

YET NOBODY IS INFLUECED BY THEM, RIGHT?

toggletoggle post by Lamp  at May 4,2012 2:22pm
I think of rap as poetry set to a beat. Not really the most challenging genre from a structural soundpoint, I guess, but it still takes skill. I just HATE (and I mean really hate) the way it sounds.

toggletoggle post by Alx_Casket  at May 4,2012 2:23pm
The new khand track does have some beastie boys influence, I take it all back.

toggletoggle post by arktouros at May 4,2012 2:23pm
well technically it's not. rap isn't based on notes. it can't really be transcribed. yeah rap "contains" music but by the classical definition of music, it's not, whereas metal is. rap is still a temporal art. it's not devalued just because you can't call it "music". anyway it's a stupid timeless argument. rap is rap.

This "if you don't play instruments, you don't play music" argument is so tired.

The Beastie Boys were absolutely influential. If you don't get that, no amount of logical explanation is going to change your mind.

Anyways, RIP MCA. What a shame.

OK, compare that to Michael Jackson. People gave credit to him as an influence all the time when he was ALIVE. Sympathy tweets don't count. I know you're smart enough to know that much.

I'm not denying that they were a talented and successful group, but it pisses me off when the short attention spanned majority gives this level of attention to someone who most of us (let's face it) haven't heard about in years. When someone dies, all of a sudden our cohort sees it fitting to have an anniversary of their death every year and play their music on that day. It's as if you only play those songs to remember their lives. You didn't fucking know them! Music is music, listen to it when the mood strikes. Sorry I didn't immediately respond, I was grocery shopping in Chinatown.

I think the problem is that you're using "the classical definition of music" and "music" as if they were the same thing. That's one way to look at it, but it's not the only one and certainly not the "right" one by any objective standard.

I don't think this "most of us," i.e. people posting on a New England heavy metal messageboard, are a very good barometer of a rapper's cultural relevance.

I feel like the hip-hop world has acknowledged the Beastie Boys' influence plenty by SAMPLING THEM NONSTOP FOR DECADES, to the point where it didn't really need to be acknowledged out loud. (Except, it has been acknowledged, out loud and in print, by tons and tons and tons of artists in the field. Since the beginning. How you are not aware of this is another discussion entirely.)
