i can't, i don't have cable. it wasn't good in the 90's either. for every nirvana and nine inch nails, there was godsmack and backstreet boys. the modern decade has WMDs and SOPA. cell tower porn and direct x 11.
The 90s sucked too, it's just that the country/world is getting progressively gayer. Internet access everywhere, smartphones, "reality" TV, etc. just make people more lazy, useless, and overweight.
modern decade vs. 90s:
more reliable cars
higher education costs
90's band reunion tours
we're officially old now
i don't live in my parent's basement
a whole generation of kids that don't know who metallica is
who is anonymous?
cable modem hacking
nigger president and right-wing identity crisis
fracking
lake vostok drilling
international space station
Pilgrim is a band in the '10s, in the '90s they were 4 year olds going to warehouse shows in Olneyville and living in a crusty squat on Commodore Street.
Pilgrim is a band in the '10s, in the '90s they were 4 year olds going to warehouse shows in Olneyville and living in a crusty squat on Commodore Street.
Advantage: Four year old DIY warriors.
Reminds me of the time Ben from Dropdead asked Brian and I whether they should start a derivative nowadays doom band, and I showed them a Doom record, and they went another direction with it.
Also, waiting 20 minutes to download a picture of a girl getting doggy style from a real dog sucked. Yeah, you appreciated it more once you got it, but it wasted so much time. Now it's click and bang, girl getting inseminated by a puppy.
2000's:
All diseases cured
Hero president ends all war
Warehouse shows wiped off the face of the earth
No cats in America
90's:
Can't find Fodors travel atlas to advance to next rank in Where in the World is Carmen San Diego
Parents won't get off the phone so you can download your Juno email
Yeah, but you're comparing real, actual 90s fashion to nowadays hipster bullshit fashion - real, actual non-artisan-lightbulb-consuming people don't really dress that way, now.
There was less dependence on social media and technology. Political correctness wasn't so vast and people weren't getting so butthurt that they had to sue everyone.

90's technology:
- VHS exists for 20 years. Make practically no improvements on it whatsoever besides SVHS which will never reach consumers and be deemed obsolete almost as fast as it was invented.
- Magic the Gathering
- The Florida Marlins
2012 technology:
- worthless large hadron collider
- pointless 1920 x 1080 HDTV that doesn't even get Hey Dude
- cures for once fatal diseases but you have to take like... mad pills
they have the old school games organized by the manufacturer, there's a pinball isle, and nintendo, atari, sega, etc. Plus I went there in the winter so there was NOONE else there, I felt like I had finally caught up to my childhood dreams.
DIO and Pete Steele are genius, who gives a fuck about seth in any decade? Im not even saying I dislike AC, but, seriously, get the fuck over yourself.
I remember the 70's as a kid. Looking back on it, it was funny as hell and kind of fun. I remember the 80's big time. Good drugs, good friends, etc. Fuck these days. The 90's were meh for everything.
y'all bitchez suffer from selective memory, rose tinted glasses, and the inability to re-map your perceptions of shit to see the awesomeness of now.
i loved the 90s too, but as an experiment i'm gonna rip the 90s and support now:
90s:
- no free music or movies from the internet
- limp bizkit, nu-metal
- spice girls
- nsync
- JNCOs
- basement screamo
- apex of vegan sXe hare krishna, etc. HC douches
- a gazillion bands like Kreator, Napalm Death, etc. all "updated" their sound and it was horrendous
- towards the end of the 90s, ex-hardcore kids playing in really cut-rate melodic swedish death metal bands
- ska/punk
THIS DECADE (or at least really recently)
- stuff like maryland deathfest, people finally into decent quality underground shit again (i.e. i can find people wearing, say, a Repulsion shirts or a "Scum" shirt or a Master t-shirt, try doing that at an underground show in the 1990s, it was all like fucking Cannibal Corpse or Suffocation t-shirts or if it was a more DIY kinda show it was whichever bands came through the most)
- blog upon blog upon blog to find underground shit
- access to underground music is completely democratized, there are no more barriers to exploring whatever tangent you want
- basically, the internet is amazing.... a lot of memes are the funniest shit to happen in a while... free movies, free info, you can learn anything
- computers are cheap as fukkkk
- traveling is easy as fukkkkk
- recording studio gear (i.e. software) is really accessible and cheap compared to back then
THIS DECADE IS BETTER BECAUSE PEOPLE CAN ILLEGALLY DOWNLOAD A MASTER ALBUM AND LIKE UNDWRGROUND METAL AGAIN AND ORDER A MASTER SHIRT AND PREMADE VEST WITH MASTER PATCH ON EBAY THE NEXT DAYYY
This decade=
Bands like AttackAttack! Because of every thing dickhead listed.
true.
but shit man, i implore you to go back to the 90s, especially if you are from Massachusetts, and re-visit how bad it was to endure a plague of horrendous groove-hardcore-metal bands, fronted by assholes with bleach blonde whiffles, wallet chains, tribal tattoos etc. with names like "STOMP 187" and "RIOT 425".....

with the exception of the pre-made vest, i read the above and just think "more people listen to master, that's cool". but again i'm one of those crazies who doesn't get affected by other people finding "my" shit.
true, I doesnt really matter. what I always ponder though, is ease of access to "underground" metal good for it? It is no longer underground. Metal hasn't been underground for years, thanks to technology.
How is metal not underground? In my circles of friends that don't listen to metal at all, they are totally clueless. Ease of access doesn't mean people more people are actually going to access it.
I appreciate the 90's for the little things, such as being a kid trying to score a dime and actually getting high off of weed. It's when I picked up the drums and when Helmet released their best material. Oh the memories.

well, it's not like a band like BLASPHEMOPHAGER will ever be played on MTV or something..... if my Justin Bieber-loving neighbor wants to go and get their releases, she can in two clicks, but she won't. i feel "underground" shit is still underground and will always settle to the bottom in the underground.
remember back in the 80s and 90s, you had metallica filling stadiums, slayer was filling a bit less than that, megadeth, iron maiden.... and on the other hand you had the most underground shit ever like Mortuary Drape....
to me it will always be represented by a similar spread.

"underground" I guess, should be a subjective term.
hahahahaha, sadly i have...... i need to watch some horse-porn to clean my mind now though, thanks.
bullshit just that bad existed back then, we just didn't live in the hyper-informationally-blown-out-bizarro-internet-exposure-to-everything reality that the internet enables these days. in the 90s, your exposure to human trash like this would've been less.
I would argue the ratio of people who enjoy "underground" metal is the same, if not a tad more.. But there's a whole bunch of more fans today because of the younger generations. This has been quite noticable in the past 10 years or so. I guess metal will always be an "underground subculture" , but now it's much easier to get into it and hear of bands. The internet has changed a lot, for both good and bad.
I broke down in the middle of fucking nowhere in maybe 1994 and I had to walk really fucking far to use a phone, plus I only had enough change at the fucking payphone for one call, with no stores or people for fucking miles. So i called AAA but I couldn't even tell them exactly where the fuck I was because I didn't know nor could I pay for the fucking tow because I only had 10 bucks, no debit card, credit cards.
There isn't as much danger in going off somewhere unfamiliar with cellphones and gps. And I don't swear as much as I did in the 90's. Technology calms me in the worst of times.
I dont remember any of that shit. Zoog disney? Wtf is that? Hey Arnold? Fuck that Zionist show. Aaron Carter? Late 90s.
all of those graphics were made by kids who were born in the early 90s.
- The Disney Channel was always called the Disney Channel and it was a premium channel that only future hipsters had. Once in a while I would get a free preview of it for like a week, get excited, and realize all the shows sucked and Mickey Mouse is the least entertaining cartoon character ever.

hahahaha holy shit, i remember when we'd get a free preview of all of the pay channels, and i'd have to watch every one of those "Disney Presents" movies hosted by Michael Eisner with my family because everything on Showtime was too risqué.
This country was better before the FED. Only pre 1913 USA is real. Fuck nowadays USA.
LOL @ people favoring technology over humanity. The human race should be extinct. To the wolves, all of you.

I'm with Aril. The 90's were a much better time. A more innocent time. A time where that innocence could be buttfucked with ease, privately, with no fear of some silly god fearing twat telling his parents. Ahhh, such a better time. Also, I was a big fan of Pearl Jam. Whatever happened to those guys?
Now we're getting into some interesting stuff. Technology and humanity combined = cyborgs. MillennialKingdom dismantled the cyborg a long time ago, though. VIVA LA GOD
Hahaha, nice. With so many of our resources directly tied to the efficiency of modern technology, could we ever go back without a massive cleansing of the population? Of course not. The 90s were good though. Sneaker pimps or get out of my life.

more easily than most would like to admit, actually. I've been making a good living from selling ancient extinct 1990's technology for a long time now. Wanna buy a Peavey Mach IV bass head? $500 man! Runs on propane.
Who needs modern technology? Next bands want things like AC, Heat, fire insurance, safe electrical wiring, lights, jeeeeze, where does it end with all this modern shit. Puhlease. Grounds? Grounds are for PUSSIES! Just rip that extra prong off. That'll be $50 for the repair.
Almost every different sound within metal was established by the late 90's. There have been very few new sounds/subgenres created since then.
Also I don't think harddcore/metalcore infected the melodic death metal scene until after Shadows Fall broke out around 1998-2000. Darkest Hour was 2000 I think. So I blame that cluster fuck on the 2000's.
Pilgrim is a band in the '10s, in the '90s they were 4 year olds going to warehouse shows in Olneyville and living in a crusty squat on Commodore Street.

Pilgrim was calling Lightning Bolt pretentious hipster music when they were a three piece band just putting out their yellow album and playing Fort Thunder on a regular basis.
Today, Pilgrim goes back to that same spot and calls all the Price Rite shoppers good upstanding citizens, standing up to the hipster food tyrant known as Whole Foods over on North Main St.
Just think, 15 years from now a bunch of loser metal heads will be bitching about how life was better in "00's."
"bro, we had shit like Portal, both the band and game, Breaking bad, and Iran hadn't yet drop a nuke on Texas. great times dude."

weeds gets me high as fuck. You're doin it wrong.
agreed.
I'm pretty sure all you have to do is spark it up and inhale, but I guess I could be wrong. It may be more complicated than that.
Seriously though, I think it may be due to the fact that when I was younger, it was harder to obtain so when I'd finally score some, it was very rewarding and the high was waaaay more euphoric and tripped out. Weed hasn't had that effect on me for years now. Obviously I get "high" but it's not the same as it once was.

Nah, for me, it's not an issue of quality from then and now. In the beginning I was getting schwag and mids. The first time I ever smoked headies I got ridiculously lit. I can still remember that particular high.

This thread is gay. See you hipsters in 10 years so you can all talk about how great the 2000's were and how much the 2010's suck. Only shit that happend before that faggot christ was real anyways....
Step 1. Go back to 1990's way of music distribution i.e. buy it, dub it, or gtfo. CD-Rs barely exist yet and it's not like you'd know what to do with them if they did. Make finding music on demand online virtually impossible. Choose between downloading enormous wav files of 10 seconds of a song, or using Real Player to stream playlists of "radio shows" that almost never update.
Step 2. Make purchasing new music a game of russian roulette where you're forced to rely on useless magazine reviews, word of mouth, and listening to music in your friend's Mustang LX. Accept an equal probability of any record you buy being awesome or terrible. Realize only later in life that magazine reviewers are too pussy to admit that newer Slayer and Machinehead records are fucking terrible. Prepare to get sold on bands like Pro-Pain, and Pissing Razors.
Step 3. Go the extra step and require anyone who wants to hear bands that don't have big label support to trade tapes, and write snail mail letters to bands with $3 tucked inside begging them to send you a demo and not steal your money.
Step 4. Watch the available population of people who claim to love music evaporate overnight like a Rapture for posers.
Nah, for me, it's not an issue of quality from then and now. In the beginning I was getting schwag and mids. The first time I ever smoked headies I got ridiculously lit. I can still remember that particular high.
I mean I agree that those first few times I got really baked will never be topped, but I still get good and high daily as an adult, and it helps calm me down so I don't lose my shit every five minutes for no reason.
You remember this picture someone posted in one of the image threads here months ago?
I went and posted that on another board and the first reply I got was "the 90s ruled pretty hard."
fuckin' racists
Yea, people are retarded. It was probably one of those chicks you see trying to add you on fb, then you find out she was born in like '93 and you're like WAT
Baseball Stars ruled. Even though I got in one little licensing dispute and SNK got scared and said "you're using fictional teams instead of paying the MLB players union license fees... in Bel Air."
Yea, people are retarded. It was probably one of those chicks you see trying to add you on fb, then you find out she was born in like '93 and you're like WAT
Laws pertaining to cannabis, although far from ideal, are certainly far better now than in the 90s. And not to sound completely redundant, but interwebs and not just smartphones but cell phones in general.
Also agreed on the laws.
But I can't put technology over substance. if that's the case, then every decade prior to cell phones amd computers sucked.
Doesn't make sense to me
