For those of you who are drooling about the graphics and will prefer to play this on Xbox 360... one can obtain a graphics card far superior to that of 360's on a PC..
FACT BOMB

Hopefully this is the best game ever. Morrowind and Oblivion could have been the best games ever but it seemed like the creators didn't put as much into the story and funness as they put into the cutting edge style of gameplay, especially Morrowind. Don't get me wrong. They're awesome games but it kind of seemed like frosting the best cake ever with just a very good frosting.

It's gay that the PC is getting phased out for gaming. Especially when WOW is earning billions of dollars. It just doesn't make sense.

Agreed. Steam is the new PC gaming.
I miss the old days of walking into an Electronic's Boutique and seeing a whole wall dedicated to PC Games. Now you're lucky to get one tiny shelf in the back. And it's all shitty games.
The Witcher 2 is the best RPG since Oblivion and has far better storytelling. The world isn't as "open" but it doesn't hold your hand either. I didn't know it was coming out for 360 but that's good news because I know you'd like it Andrew.

Brutally hard at times, but agreed, one of the best games in...forever. Well worth the video card upgrade.
Still debating getting it for PC or PS3. Bethesda said it would be more oriented towards consoles. I don't know how I feel about that, but I do like the idea of melting into my recliner to play it.
if fallouts and oblivion are any indication, they look infinitely better on PC. you can crank the settings, and the consoles just don't have the memory for the draw distance and better textures. ALSO remember that most games run in 720P which is ONLY 1280x720, usually you run PC games in at least 1600x900. there's really no comparison, the only difference is the way a TV projects it's image versus a computer monitor. TV projects in large format which makes "small" resolutions appear larger, but pixels are still easier to see in console games.
and if the argument is Xbox vs. PS3 then PS3's hardware is better and developers are squeezing more out of the PS3 these days. The Xbox came out in 2005 and PS3 in 2006, they are ancient in hardware age.
A bunch of game devs have said that the control scheme is better on console than PC. PC controls for Oblivion were just fine, and when it comes to dual wielding and other commands, I have enough buttons on my mouse to handle everything. And my ps3 controller works on my PC if all else fails. What.
YEAH WELL I USE AN APPLE LAPTOP AT HOME SO "PC" ISN'T REALLY AN OPTION NOW IS IT?
I prefer it on console honestly. The only games I prefer on PCs are ones where you're using a mouse to do things, ie diablo, warcraft, command and conquer etc. I never understood how people played those on console...
But I preferred games like doom/duke nukem/q3e with a controller hooked up to my PC; why not just play on console?
I guess it's just a matter of preference. I personally cant stand playing ANY 1st person game with a controller.
Also, the video card in 360 is outdated, although they made it for the console.
That was a major backstab to us PC fags because all previous Elder Scrolls games were designed as PC games first and foremost.

the PC version won't suffer any. don't worry. xbox is the old crotchety console by now but it won't detract from the experience. I'm thinking about getting the ps3 version only to add to my collection, i've noticed PS3 stuff is holding it's value really well. I'll still play it on PC though.
There's a Metal Gear remastered collection coming out around the same time. Plus I'm thinking of dropping $ for the Skyrim collector's edition. Goddamm that's mad $$$.
I actually just bought this 2 days ago and Im liking it alot. Its an open world rpg like oblivion and you kinda find survivors along the way to get quests and what not. Its holding me over until skyrim cuz deus ex was kinda boring.
the PC version will have a HUGE community of turbonerds with endless free time to create mods and add-ons, just like morrowind and oblivion. consoles can't do that shit.

what have you made? is there some sort of noob modding guide for the bethesda tech out there? i might get into modding for skyrim. ideally some sort of 2-4 player co-op mod, which i know was worked on for oblivion but i'm not sure how far the project went, or even just adding content.
So I've never played any of Elder Scrolls games, but I've always heard they've been good. Is it like a FF-type RPG or no? I generally don't get into RPG type games, but this one looks friggin ridiculous.

timma i'd say the only way it's similar to FF is in the world map exploration. the big difference is that elder scrolls games emphasize going off the beaten path, and complete character customization. the combat is in real-time so it's action based, and you level up based on how you play - if you sneak around and use a bow, you get better at stealth and archery.
It's not like a jrpg by any means. Think of it as a fantasy movie and youre the main character and can do what ever you want.
It has a linear main mission, but most of it is non linear.
My coffee is stone cold. I don’t even know how long I’ve had it, I’ve been so completely lost in Skyrim. I’ve been granted a generous chunk of time to play the very latest build of the full game – no restrictions on what I can do or where I can go. And I’ve only just finished creating my character.
At the start of the game, you’re being led to your execution. I’ve skipped to just after you get out of that, when you’re given one last chance to choose your race, gender and appearance before being let out into this vast and frosty world.
Bethesda don’t want to spoil the main quest, and neither do I. The reason to be excited about Skyrim is your own story: the unique string of discoveries and adventures you run into. And because it’s unique, I can tell you mine without spoiling yours.
Mine was the story of a scarlet-plumed Argonian with manic staring eyes. As I say, I spent a long time in character creation. Argonians are lizard men, and they’ve had a major overhaul in Skyrim: they look more monstrous, leathery, dinosaurian.
As in every Elder Scrolls game, you start as a prisoner with no history or status. But the war paint, scars and dirt you can add during character creation make it feel different this time. They’ve made it easier to make a character who looks desperate, bedraggled and fierce. Every race looks leaner and meaner: previously adorable wood elves have piggy, dead black eyes. Previously goofy orcs look fierce and tribal. Once aloof high elves look withered and cruel. And dark elves- wait, no, dark elves always looked like jerks.
My scary-eyed Argonian starts the game in a cave. At the other end, a dazzling light shines through chunks of blue ice, and as I step towards it, a prompt appears: ‘To Skyrim’.
Morrowind let you off a boat, into a misty fishing village overlooked by a giant tick. Oblivion let you out of a sewer, onto the shores of a shining lake. Skyrim lets you out of a cave, on the snowy slopes of a huge mountain. The craggy landscape stretches before you, half lost in the clouds. It’s one hell of a sight. I turn around and set off in the opposite direction.
This is what I love about Elder Scrolls games. I love not doing what I’m told, avoiding what I’m pointed at, and going where I shouldn’t. Anyone wanting to take the well-trodden path in Skyrim can head down that slope, discover the small town of Riverwood, and kill a boss spider in a dark cave. But we’ve seen all that in the E3 demo – I want to see the rest of the world.
A few minutes up the hill, I find a walled-off Nordic town I’m not allowed into. I hop on a few boulders and climb in anyway. Through a pair of heavy doors, I find subterranean torture chambers, and dead adventurers rotting in tiny cages. Only one seems worth looting – a robed guy with a book in his cell – but it’s locked.
Lockpicking is no longer a tumbler-tickling nightmare: you just swivel one pick to what you hope is a sweet spot, and try turning the lock with the other. It’ll turn a little if you’re close to the sweet spot, but turn too far in the wrong position and the pick snaps. It’s a system that works well in Fallout 3, and it feels slicker here.
Persuasion, by the way, isn’t a minigame at all this time. Certain dialogue options have ‘[Persuade]’ in front of them, and your chance of success – which isn’t shown – depends on your skill. I never succeeded at one.
The wizard has nothing much on him, but the book is worth it: it teaches me Spark, a streaming lightning spell. I try it out on a ribcage: a crackle of white energy leaps from my hand, jolting it across the room, and doesn’t stop. The roaring current keeps flowing as long as you hold the button. It’s an addictive feeling of power.
Back out in the wilderness, I decide I need a destination. The map, when I bring it up, is beautiful: a bird’s-eye-view of the world, in full 3D and rotatable to view its geography. Parts of it are swamped in mist because, apparently, it’s actually misty there at this moment.
I pan beyond the mountain I’m climbing now and look for the nearest city in this direction. Off to the east, the snowy slopes give way to milder forests running along a meandering river, and a few miles later the river leads to a city. I’m going to Riften.
You can’t fast-travel to cities you haven’t visited already, but I want to walk it anyway. I haven’t gone far up the slopes when it starts to snow – lightly, then heavily, then a full-on blizzard. A cold haze creeps over everything, and I can barely see where I’m going. I stumble on some carefully piled rocks, and follow a trail of these as best I can. Until I come to one that’s splattered with blood and decorated with human bones. Ah.
My compass indicates some kind of thing nearby, so I head to it. I could use a thing about now.
The thing turns out to be Orphan Rock, a huge mass of stone jutting out from the mountainside. Scrambling through the snow, I find a way to the top and peer out into the storm. All I can make out is what looks like a huge carcass to the east. I jump down to investigate, and realise it’s a horse: dead and twisted next to an upturned cart. I ‘search’ its ‘inventory’ and ‘collect’ some horse meat, then freeze at the sound of steel. I scan the wreckage for movement, and realise there’s a large, shaggily dressed warrior making his way around it, battleaxe drawn.
So about the new dual-wielding system. In your inventory, you equip an item or spell by pressing the button you want to assign it to: left or right. There are virtually no restrictions on what you can mix, so I’d mixed a flame spell in my left hand with the new lightning one in my right. And in the heat of the moment, it’s pretty natural to just hold down both.
The crackling torrent of fire and electricity takes even me by surprise. A separate stream shoots from each hand, but they’re so thick and chaotic that it often looks like one vast beam of lightning and flame. I can barely see the warrior through the dazzling blaze, but when my magicka bar runs dry there’s only a corpse. At which point, a long sharp object zips past my head.
Archers. Two of them, and I have no magicka. I will solve this by standing exactly behind a tree until I do. This is what they did for a cover system in fantasy times.
Unfortunately, the warrior has a friend with a sword and shield, and he knows his way around a tree. I need something else to attack with, so I bring up my Favourites menu. Your inventory in Skyrim is like a web browser, in that you can bookmark items and bring that shortlist up in-game. Time is paused while you choose, so it’s not like a hotkey system – a difference I was glad of in this tight spot. I’d bookmarked my best onehanded sword, and I had two of them, so I hit the left and right buttons to put one in each hand.
Melee combat is slightly more satisfying than in Oblivion, but light blows still feel a little unconvincing, and heavy ones still a little clumsy. My enemy was excellent at blocking, but I had a crucial advantage: I wasn’t going to ever stop attacking for any reason. Eventually he just couldn’t block all the blows from both my swords all the time, and he fell to his cuts. At which point, I had a full bar of magicka and my fire and lightning spells re-equipped. Charge!
I am not a skilful man, so it took my whole magicka supply to keep my dual streams on the first archer long enough to burn him to the ground. Back to the favourites menu: two axes! Against a man with a bow, this fight goes better – it ends when I bring both axes crashing into either side of his head with a special dual power attack.
Suddenly I’m alone in the blizzard, among the corpses of both the attackers and the travellers they evidently ambushed. I put my axes away and set off towards Riften.
The blizzard doesn’t let up, and it’s getting dark. I start looking for another thing. My compass suggests there’s a boxy thing with lines in it to the north and a triangular thing to the west – I’m not yet familiar with what these icons represent. I head for the boxy thing, and by the time I arrive it’s night.
It’s a small shack, lit by lamplight from the inside, and pretty glowing insects buzzing around outside. I try to catch one. ‘Sparkfly thorax collected’. What?! No! I didn’t mean- nevermind.
Inside, I find the journal of an alchemist who lived here for a while. I use his apparatus to try mixing a few potions of my own: any two ingredients with a common effect will make a potion, but you have to eat one raw to find out any of their effects in advance. In the case of Nightshade and Death’s Bane, I decide to forego the taste test and just experiment. They produce a strong poison, which I apply to a sword I will forget to ever use again.
Finally, I shut the door and decide to see if I can sleep through this storm – or at least the night.
The next morning the sun is shining, I have a bonus to my health and magicka for sleeping in a good bed, and it’s only a short trudge through the snow before it gives way to an autumnal forest: silver birches with rustling yellow leaves. Soon I reach a camp of half a dozen large tents, erected around a fire with a roasting spit. Imperial guardsmen are milling about in their Roman-looking armour, so I trade with their quartermaster and then try their cooking apparatus.
Cooking is a new feature where, as soon as you bring up the interface, all the imperial guardsmen around you draw their weapons, start shouting, and then run up the hill behind you while you gently stir a pot. Wait, I’m not sure that’s meant to happen.
I join the guards, but I can’t see what they’re reacting to. Following their gazes, I head up a hill outside camp, then finally see it: a Redguard woman in leathers on a high rock, raining arrows down on the camp below. I draw a newly purchased warhammer, itching to try out two-handed weaponry on someone relatively defenceless.
She draws a battleaxe. She runs at me, storming down the hill. I draw my warhammer back. She draws her battleaxe back. I swing. She swings – and an arrow hits her in the side of the neck, sending her flying off my screen and tumbling gracelessly down the hill.
Guys! I was having a dramatic hands-on preview moment!
Back at camp, I get the hang of cooking, then blacksmithing: both are basically lists of things you can produce that pop up while your character looks busy in the background. Cooking turns raw food items into stews that give you long-lasting buffs, such as a venison stew that steadily regenerates your health for five minutes or so. Blacksmithing turns metal ores into armour and weapons, but better item types are locked off until you get the right blacksmithing perk. I also had a go on their grindstone: you can sharpen weapons for extra damage. Elsewhere, you can use enchanting shrines to add spell effects to any weapon, and even destroy magical weapons to learn their enchantments and apply them to something else.
While I tinkered, a guard mentioned that the legion are always looking for help. It turns out you can actually join the Imperial Legion in Skyrim, and they’re one of a few non-guild factions.
Near the camp, I find a ruined temple of some kind, half-overgrown. I’m about to investigate when a halfnaked man runs up to me and gets my attention. Since this isn’t Oblivion, that doesn’t mean my head is sucked into his for a creepy conversation where his face fills the screen – I’m just turned to face him, rooted to the spot but free to look around while he talks.
“Here, hold on to this for me! I can’t keep it, but I’ll be back for it later.”
Since the item in question is a Battleaxe of Souls, I accept. Before the guy can even run off, a hunter appears.
“Have you seen a thief anywhere?”
I look round at the thief, then back to the hunter, and consider the axe in my inventory. “… no.”
“Damn. Well, if you see him, let me know, he has something of mine.”
As soon as the conversation ends, the hunter sees the thief and draws his bow. Not wanting to be left out, I draw my new battleaxe and crush the thief with an overhanded power attack. I look at the hunter, then back to the stolen axe I just used in front of him, and crush him with it too.
I’m still a long way out of Riften, and it’s taken me an hour to cross a patch of snow that looks tiny on the map. There are, however, a few horses here at camp. On the one hand, they’re not for sale and everyone’s watching me. On the other hand, woo! Horsey!
You now steer horses the way you steer yourself – they don’t use the vehicle-style controls of Oblivion. It’s not a dramatic change: horses are still just a reasonably fun speed boost, but one I badly needed to reach Riften.
I make excellent time galloping along the leafy riverside road, and I even stop to say hi to some Rift Guards who’ve made camp by the river near the city gates. This, it turns out, is a mistake.
The Rift Guards are a separate faction to the Imperial Legion, so they don’t much care about the bounty on my head for stealing this horse. But when I get back on my horse, they’re suddenly furious. He’s stealing the horse he rode in on! GET HIM!
This sort of lunacy will be a familiar tale for anyone who horse-rustled in Oblivion. But in other ways, the crime system is more advanced: each city is its own faction, so crimes in one don’t get you in trouble in the next. And if you can kill everyone who saw you commit a crime, you’ll get a notification that there are no surviving witnesses, and your bounty has been cleared.
Right now, though, this is bad. I gallop on to Riften inside of a minute, but arrive with arrows whizzing past my head and sticking in my horse. Two guards at the gates charge at me on sight. I try dismounting and putting my weapon away, the way you usually surrender to the guards in Skyrim, but they don’t relent. As much to escape their blades as any actual desire to be here, I burst through the city gates.
It gets rough. Guards are streaming in from every side street as I barge through the busy market in the centre of town, jump over fences and weave between bystanders. This is not how I wanted to see the city. I leg it through a gate in the walls.
Outside, something bizarre is happening. The Imperial Guardsmen chasing me for the first time I stole the horse have run into the Rift Guards furious with me for the second time, and they’re both much more furious with each other. A small war breaks out in front of the city walls, and for once I’m not under immediate attack. When there’s only one guard left among the bloodied corpses, I walk straight up to him, weapon sheathed: please, please arrest me. He arrests me.
In Oblivion, a few of your skills would atrophy as you rotted in your cell. In Skyrim, this doesn’t happen, but your progress towards your next point in a few skills will be reset. It’s a much milder penalty – I don’t even notice which skills I’ve lost progress in.
Finally exploring Riften without being stabbed, I find a remarkable city. A river runs through it, and in places the cobbled streets give way to sharp drops to the water below, wooden walkways running along the houses at street level. Below that, a network of piers connects the doors of grubbylooking subterranean dwellings, their doors almost at water level. From the chatter around town, I hear there’s a network down there called the ratways, where the Thieves Guild hide out. Rift Guards with ominous helmets that conceal their faces growl as I pass. In all kinds of ways, it reminds me of Vivec, Morrowind’s intimidating capital.
When I ask art director Matt Carafano about the other cities, he says they’re all unique. “We worked really hard to make those feel distinct. So Riften is a rundown lake town, but it’s set in the beautiful fall forest area. Whereas Markarth is built in an ancient dwarven ruin in cliff sides, so it’s very different. Solitude is more like a castle city, kinda influenced by an imperial style. Windhelm is an ancient Nordic fortress, so it’s full of really old Nordic architecture. And you have the city of Whiterun in the centre, which is a more classic Viking – almost mountain-style – city in the tundra.”
Back in the market, a shifty-looking man runs up to me. He’s impressed that I saw through the corrupt guard at the north gate, but he thinks killing him was a little harsh. I… what?
I deduce he’s a thief with some kind of scam going with a guard. That guard must have been killed in the fracas I caused at the city gates, and he’s assuming I rumbled his scheme and did it intentionally. That’s wildly untrue, but he’s so impressed with my instincts that I decide to accept the credit. He’s offering me work: he wants a vendor in town brought down, so he needs me to pickpocket a valuable ring, then place it in the vendor’s private chest. He’ll create a distraction while I work.
My new friend shouts to all the shoppers and vendors to gather round, and they do. My mark sits on a crate in front of some barrels, and as the thief rambles about a dragon elixir he’s discovered, I sneak up behind the vendor and rifle through his pockets. The moment I take the ring, he screams “Thief!” and the guards flood in. I am new at this.
I didn’t know it at the time, but in Skyrim, your chance of successfully pickpocketing something depends partly on its value. Rifling through someone’s inventory is no longer a crime – at least, not a detectable one. But when you take something, the chance you’ll get away with it depends on your pickpocketing skill, the weight of the item, and how much it’s worth. People pay more attention to their valuables, this rule implies.
I don’t resist arrest, but I’m not willing to serve time for this. As in Oblivion, you wake up in jail with a single lockpick, somehow secreted about your person. Unlike Oblivion, it was actually enough. Before long, I’m out – no skill-progress reset. Man, I should be in the Thieves Guild.
I decide to find the Thieves Guild. Not losing my skill progress pays off: soon I level up, and finally decide to rest. This is where Skyrim goes from exciting to a thing we need a new superlative for – not the resting, but the levelling up. Your skills improve as you use them, and improving enough skills increases your character level. That lets you choose a perk: a tweak to one of your skills that makes it more effective. So you have an element of choice, but you can’t pick a high-level perk for a skill you haven’t practised much: they have requirements.
The selection is literally dizzying. I have a sort of buzz in my brain as I scamper around the menu reading up on all the options I’ll never unlock in the time I have left. I have two perks saved up – you’re not forced to spend them as soon as you level – so I put them both into Destruction magic. The first halves the cost of all low level destruction spells, including my fire and lightning ones. The next enables dual-casting: when you equip the same spell in both hands, you can fire both at once for a single, disproportionately more powerful beam.
I blunder into a few dwellings before I find the ratways. They turn out to be a string of incredibly tight tunnels, dank and filthy. Almost immediately, I come out into a larger chamber and find a gaggle of thieves. Excellent!
They demand all of my money. Dammit, I forgot that was the problem with thieves. Renegotiating, I suggest that I keep all of my money, and they instead take all of the fire I’m now shooting from my hands. It’s a tough sell: some of them feel I should take one or two of their arrows in return, and one thinks his fists should be part of the deal. There’s only one thief left when I run out of magicka, so I bring out my warhammer and crumple him
Dead, he’s more generous: I’m suddenly the excited new owner of the Gloves of the Pugilist.
+15 damage on your unarmed attacks wouldn’t be much in another RPG, but Elder Scrolls games are stingy with stats. These gloves are a big deal.
It’s not long before I get to try them out. My first punch smacks a huge chunk off of my attacker’s hitpoint bar, so I try a power attack. I grab him, he disappears off screen, there’s a sickening crunch and I drop his limp body to the dirty ground.
Until now I haven’t seen many finishing moves, but with the gloves I’m doing them almost every fight. I stride through the ratways taking on all-comers, letting them close on me and then breaking them. I even discover you can mix spells with hand-to-hand combat: the funniest setup is to use a lightning spell in my left hand and keep my right as a fist. I shock people from a distance, then simply knock them out.
I’m coming to the end of my time with Skyrim, and increasingly anxious that I’m not going to find the Thieves Guild before Bethesda haul me away. The ratways are long and intricate, and all I’m finding are big chambers dominated by tree roots and rampant undergrowth. Eventually I find an even bigger area with a lake of fetid water in the centre, a jetty with tables and chairs on the other side, and a fire glowing behind it.
I creep around the edge of the chamber and see people sitting in some of the chairs. I realise it’s an underground tavern. And the people here all seem rather… thievey. Since the first rule of the Thieves Guild is that you don’t tell everyone who wanders into the Thieves Guild that this is the Thieves Guild, I check with Bethesda – yep, this is the Thieves Guild. I’ve found it at last.
Unfortunately, no one in the entire establishment wants anything to do with me. It suddenly occurs to me that the guy I failed the quest for earlier – you know, the thief – might have been a Thieves Guild member trying to recruit me. Whether because I messed that up, or simply because I don’t have an ‘in’, the Thieves all treat me like dirt.
I have about five minutes left. I put my gloves back on.
Before playing it, I wasn’t totally convinced Skyrim would be a huge leap forward from Oblivion. It is. For all the similarities, it feels like a new world, rendered at a new level of fidelity. More importantly, the new systems completely blow open the possibilities for evolving your character. I can’t stop thinking about all the possible combinations of weapons and spells I want to try together when the game comes out – pouring out lightning and fire at the same time was a feeling of power I never had in Oblivion.
And even more tantalising, the perks you can unlock open the way for ridiculous high-level characters. An archer who can slow time while he aims, knock people off their feet with his arrows, and run like the wind between shots. A conjurer who can bring his defeated opponents back to life, two at a time, to fight for him as zombies. Or a thief who can steal the armour off your back, pick a lock right in front of the guards, and even slip a poison into your bloodstream unnoticed.
I can’t shake the obsession Skyrim has left me with. I’m pulling screenshots up on my monitor just to feel like I’m playing again. I’m scribbling character builds on napkins. I’m replaying only the snowiest bits of Oblivion. And I’m wondering what the hell November is doing way over there.
new Horn of Valere song is going to be entirely Skyrim based...the drummer and I are both totally obsessed.
little know fact: When Horn of Valere were called Basiliskk and decided we were going to go in another direction and wanted to change names, we considered Mages Guild.
HoV lineup right now is all original...Adam, the other guitarist is back from Iraq for good. Jon the drummer has always been wanting to get it back together but we were always making excuses not to do it...but we're practicing this month for the first time since 2005.
not sure about bass or vocals yet...not sure if Jay Christraper will still want to do it now that he's down in Providence. I can pull off the vocals...bassists will be tried out once we've got a few rehearsals under our belt.
I made a fb pot the other day about how someone should book a black metal show with bands from like 6-7 years ago. that'd be great.
Good news, regardless. Hopefully it all works out.
the elder scrolls series has a lot of mythology to it, some good material in there, but i have no idea what the story is about and i've played 2 of them a lot. all i know is patrick stewart died.
I got the biggest house you can get in Oblivion. It has a huge basement, would be awesome for shows.
Too bad it's much harder to get a house in real life. :(... all I did was kill ghosts to get a mansion.
post by blessed offal nli at Nov 2,2011 11:06am
that house is OK but everytime you try to sleep fuckin BAM! ghosts up your ass.
I had a random little cottage on a lake that a queen gave me for helping some Orc warrior chick discover her heritage. Humble, yet quaint. and no ghosts.

You have to find pick up a finger on the ground, bring it to the guy who sold you the house and convince him to come back to the house so you can break the curse.
haha, I think I had that one too. kinda like a shack, right?
I hope they use different voice actors in this game. Got so sick of the oblivion actors. they could have switched them up a bit. Funny thing was when you got a bum asking for money he sounds all homeless and drunk, then when you ask him for info, the voice sobers up and sounds normal. FUCK YOU FAKE BUM YOU AIN'T GETTING A COIN
I rested my head in the kult vampire basement most of the time...

lol
also, yea it was kinda a shack. didnt know about the finger thing. I think I had a house in some shitty town that was overrun by a vampire cult that I saved a shopowners daughter from.

haha, yeah they ARE using many more voices and cohesive dialogue systems. todd howard said something about that somewhere. there's no longer set dialogue options for a bunch of people, but each NPC has seperate voices and responses.
only killing trolls with magic inside a painting is real.
I poisoned my longblade with turpentine and killed them that way. Had to do that quest 3 times because it kept glitching and the portal back wouldn't appear.

I remember I'd be walking around somerville and every time I entered a new area I'd hear this in my head
NOPE. bethesda says fuck multiplayer. the PC might get a mod for co-op, but xbox definitely will not!

I'm ok with noline shit...I rarely play games online but it would be cool to roll with a buddy on xbox live and wreck shit.
Like going through the Oblivion Gates, those levels got hard and pretty intense...would have bee fun as shit with a real life partner (LOL AT LIFE PARTNER) to wage war by your side.
I have the grey fox hood...bitches cant see SHIT when i be creepin.
I love that shit, you take it off and the guards are like "oh hey there good buddy, you didnt happen to see a guy your height, race and build wearing the exact same clothes as you only with a hood on did you?" only thing is, then you're over-encumbered
My current card (Slag's old one) handled everything fine up until now. I bought Sonic Generations the other night and it wouldn't run. Needs a card that has 512MB and CUDA or whatever.
For those of you who are drooling about the graphics and will prefer to play this on Xbox 360... one can obtain a graphics card far superior to that of 360's on a PC..
FACT BOMB
This is true, but a ps3/360 costs less than a mid range card does these days. In my opinion the cost of graphics hardware is what is killing pc gaming these days, not piracy. Some serious pc gamers are now buying 2, 3 or 4 top of the line cards to run in sli, or crossfire mode, plus the upgraded power requirements that come with it. Some pcs now have multiple power supplies just to power the graphics hardware. It's just costing too much to stay current on the pc. This combined with the ability to play games on your HDTV has made consoles more attractive.

I think a lot of that is overkill. PCs are easy to pour money into, but for a baseline system that can run everything very well these days, you don't need to spend over $400 for a complete system. I dropped $280 the other day for a brand new AMD processor, mainboard, and 8GB performance RAM. I can turn around and sell the 4-year old Intel hardware I have for almost that much! I think with PCs, the biggest barrier is knowledge of system building.

Completely agree it's easy to go overboard. My mainboard was probably about $280 alone when I first bought it. That being said, pc hardware has always driven game development and vice verse. Eventually, even with 4 dedicated graphics cards and 16gb of ram games will start to get choppy again and you'll have to stomach lowering your settings for the latest game.
Motherboards are usually the one thing you don't want to skimp on. True these days you get over charged for a bunch of useless features you never use, but nothing is more obnoxious than chasing down system issues that are the result of a cheap board and shitty quality control.
I'd be interested in how much you're actually using USB 3.0, overclocking features, 3 PCI-e ports, and that cadillac integrated soundcard they threw in to drive up the cost. Take away all that and you have a $100 mobo.

The overclocking I have set to a moderate level. Overclocks on demand when needed and ratchets back down when not needed. Could probably run it much higher but I'm on air cooling with the stock AMD cooler right now. I may go back to water cooling just for the the sake of getting rid of the high rpm fan noise. The clear cmos button is a nice touch, removing the battery and jumper is old school and requires opening the case. Just don't push it unintentionally. Don't have any USB 3.0 devices yet but probably will someday. I don't upgrade my system that often so this one was built with the intent to last at least 5-7 years. The integrated sound card replaced my SB audigy 2 pci card that I've had for years. Running one PCI-e Radeon HD 5850 card right now.

This is exactly why I dont PC game anymore. i used to build rigs and be all into maxing out FPS's . The more they kept upgrading cards and graphics and adding more requirments of power supplies. It just seems really silly. The technology needs to intergrate all this stuff better. Its now like having a car with 5 motors and 3 gas tanks. Its a pain in the ass to learn about and Im lazy these days. A ps3 on a nice huge hd1080p tv looks just as good, costs less, and i can lay down and play on my couch. Win.
I'd be surprised if the ps3 will output this game on full 1080p. I built my system five years ago for around $500 (using the same case for a lot longer) and I've only upgraded the video card once. My ps3 on the other hand, is only used for DLNA streaming these days.
I can stream standard def TV and movies no problem via PS3 Media Server (I think you recommended that? if so thanks). But most games that aren't in the vein of tetris gameplay will output in 720p, if that, to keep framerate up. PC > console with games like this.
PC will always be ahead of the curb because it is the platform in which new technology is released. But it is expensive.
But I guess that doesn't matter to your average PC nerd who has no girlfriend or obligations outside of playing every new game, WoW, and constantly upgrading.
post by ark at Nov 8,2011 9:46am
yeah, i use a crossover cable from PC to PS3 so streaming HD video works pretty well. i can do some HD video over wireless but it depends.
post by ark at Nov 8,2011 9:46am
PS3 Media Server is awesome but sometimes it's a pain to get certain videos to work.
Yeah, I pretty much max out at 576p bluray rips over wireless because I'm streaming from my room upstairs. For full HD, which I only really do when I have company over, I just bring my desktop down and hook up right to the receiver via HDMI.
Fucking awesome so far. I had to start over though because a whole villiage was trying to kill me and I have no idea why. I'm always a Nord, but I'm not sure if I should be something else.
The menu takes a little while to get used to.
Its differnt. I keep picking up items that I dont mean to. You can tell they were designed for consoles.
post by ark at Nov 11,2011 11:29am
i played til 4am last night, fell upon a couple surreal places and warhammer'd some redguard in a barfight. it's as brilliant as i thought it would be. the menus do take a little to get used to on pc. settings maxed out. i'm gonna hook up my controller later and try that out.
It seems my hypothesis was correct. Brockton gangstas be too busy gettin' they DUTY on, SON! Was able to have them hold a copy for me. No sleep after the O'Brien's show tonight. I'm gonna get me some porphyric hemophilia.
I don't like that you can't see your character in the inventory menu, like when switching armor. Menu is a little clunky but better than oblivions. Remember how you used to have to scroll through like 8704043043 random books to get to your repair hammers in the "misc" section? This game rules.
I feel like my life has come full circle with this game. Only being a nerd that all of the cool kids wont fuck with cuz Ill kill them and getting laid intermittently while sitting on your ass playing rpgs is real.
I'm pretty bummed they took athletics and jump out. I used to love running around jumping everywhere til I could run super fast away from enemies and jum onto rooftops
that pisses me off too.. no athletics. I was jumping around the whole time until I realized it.
great game so far, though. it's like an upgraded version of oblivion. If you've done the "Golden Claw" mission (one of the first ones you can do), you get to fight the Undead and waltz through a snowy cave with waterfalls. pretty epic.
Combat in this still looks horrible and button mashing, with no skill involved. They basicly just copied oblivion and added the fallout death scene thing. Original.

I dig it.
yeah, i like the combat a lot. it's not dark souls caliber, but still far better than oblivion's. they added enough to keep it interesting. shield bash, dual wield anything, perks make it a bit deeper. there's a good sense of "weight" behind swings and spells. i've missed a heavy swing with a two-hander and fallen off a cliff more than once.
Try one of the Souls games and you'll see why we like the combat so much. Combat here is pretty much what I expected it to be, same as Oblivion essentially.
I do have to complain about the PC UI though. HOLY SHIT ITS ATROCIOUS.
I'm not speaking about the looks either, I'm speaking about maxed-out mouselook that's still really slow, keys that don't react once reassigned (neither the new key nor the old key will allow me to pick up a book, for example). The menu system also seems very counter-intuitive to me. I like not being able to use my CURSOR to choose items on screen... meh. Will take some getting used to.
I've been killed a bunch of times but digging this game big time.

I am a level 7 Negro Kitty. I have a woman that follows me around. If I walk up to her, she says "erhhh" or something similarly smart.
Why does this game not make use of the "shout, shout, let it all out" song? It would make the perfect 80's montage music for the trek up greybeard mountain.

I also don't like how they dumbed down the speech and bartering system; however, the whole smithing thing is pretty cool, although I havn't really utilized it a whole lot. I've barely done quests, I've just been roaming around at random, robbing and killing people in the wilderness.
I love that the redguards arn't welcome in Whiterun. I'm way behind you guys in this because I had to record scratch tracks for slars drums all of yesterday.

I fucked up so hard last night and didnt save in a good spot...I'm straight up STUCK in this house, no way to get out and the enemies are beating the shit out of me. If I go back to my last 'real' save, I lose like 2 HUGE missions I did last night...
all the children look the same because its a metaphor or something.
like... get this man... we're all just that same child inside. the one that wants to forget about the cruel, harsh, cold world and play tag forever and stuff and junk.
Yeah I walked in and that vapid cunt was telling the kids how worthless they were and then told them to go to bed. I went into sneak and saw a lady go into the room and went to sleep. Crept in and slashed her with my dual wielded scimitars. Oops. Cool story, bro.
I dont like using strategy guides or anything...the ONLY reason I'm gonna puss out on this mission is because at the beginning of the mission I was supposed to give this dude a couple piece of my gear to use on the quest and I fucked up doing that so when it came time to get my gear from him and fight people, he didnt have anything for me so I'm fucking weaponless stuck in this mansion and the only way out is with this key that I cant pickpocket..I have to kill this wizard with no weapons, armor etc...
look at the info for the DX9 sharpen filter. HUGE DIFFERENCE. i have no complaints how it looks on the PC. some components are "outdated" like people wishing there were footprints on the snow, etc. come on...
I do have to complain about the PC UI though. HOLY SHIT ITS ATROCIOUS.
the WSAD menu switching just pissed me off. i had to switch to a controller...works far better.
The controls for PC are very buggy. Don't try changing them from the defaults or shit gets all mixed up and stops working. The UI also doesn't get updated when you rebind keys. I can't believe game devs still get away with doing this. Seriously how hard is it to display the updated key bindings?

The game overall looks very good and runs smooth for me on max settings. It's just when close up to certain things it doesn't look that impressive. You can tell they limited it to run better on consoles.
Is there a bemefit to sleeping and why do I need to eat when I can replenish my health with magic? Probably noob questions but I've only played for four hours and I'm a level 3.

sleeping in an owned bed gives you the "rested" effect which i think means you learn skills faster for a while. waiting is just for something like getting to a shop when they're not open. as for cooking, raw food doesn't give you much health, experimenting with recipies and cooked food gives you a lot more buffs (like increased stamina or magic regen for a while after eating a steak)

in the last one you had to sleep to level up, so it was very important. all it does in SKYRIM is heal you. if you wait, you heal as well, so its pretty pointless. you dont need to eat, but if youre a mage then its good to have some potions to heal with so you dont have to use your mana on healing.
Also, this game has overtaken my life as predicted. I just sent aril an MMS while taking a shit of me holding a large roll of toilet paper that looked like a cheese wheel to me. Value: 1
Weight: 3
Barely want to be at work right now. I just wanna go around dual wielding maces killing forsworn or the silver hand or continuing to not head up to meet the greybeards.
yea, in oblivion I didnt really follow the main quest, but that shit was epic as fuck. I got raped by that ice troll though :(
I have a companion I got from the jarl in whiterun. She's proven most helpful. We fucked that troll up good. She's also really helpful when fighting dragons because she's a great archer. Highly suggest, even though she acts like a dumb bitch and goes uhhhhh if you get too close.

elder scrolls games are always a circus with NPCs and companions. I wish they took a queue from Fallout: New Vegas where the companions actually worked, it was easy to give them orders, and they had their own backstory, quests and conversations. the only thing that took a step backward in skyrim is the companion system.
I haven't yet been able to give companions orders but then I just now realized it's probably that same key-switching nonsense so it won't work anymore.
I guess I should...i usually tell them to stay put.
you should take them, theyre really helpful. its one of the new aditions to the ES games that I really like so far. and you can make them do stuff, like wait places for you or attack random townspeople.
for the record, I'm still super bummed about no athletics
i'm kinda glad they cut it out. everybody runs, seemed like a pointless skill. i was psyched sprinting made it in.
no way, leveling up your jump was not only awesome for the obvious reasons, it was also really helpful when you got ambushed by a minotaur to be able to just jump onto a rooftop and run away. I am glad about sprint as well.

was taking the long way to some quest and came across a sleeping dragon. I woke it, it killed my Lydia and then ii killed it, only to be COMPLETELY RAPED by some demon thing called Krosis. This guy is an asshole. I ended up dying like 8 times cuz his fireball kills me in 2 hits (and i had just used a bunch of items to increase frost resistance to kill that frost dragon) and then I just grabbed the shit outta his chest and ran like a bitch. My companion is suspiciously back at my side now.

KROSIS, fuck that guy. I had to run. did you get the power words from the wall the dragon was sleeping on??
post by ark at Nov 14,2011 3:26pm
i've noticed the companion rarely dies, they just kneel and stay out of the fight if they don't get completely finished off. then they come find you i guess.
re: Krosis and other dragon priests
SPOILER TO KILLS Get the Priests to come out of their sarcophagus, run and rest for 1 hour. Come back and theyll be laying down in their tomb with the top off and are triggered just like any Draugr, so you can sneak up on it and get a crit sneak hit/kill

yea but I can't use it because it says I don't have dragon souls even though I JUST killed a dragon and got its soul.
oh and my companion ran off a high cliff and then reappeared. I got tired of her stupid face so I torched her. I wish I had her now for this dragon though :/

I have climbed the highest peak in Skyrim. Game over.
So I may be stuck in Pennsylvania for thanksgiving from Weds night to Saturday! *GASP*... I'm staying at my uncles and he has a 360 he never uses *THANK THE UNHOLY GOAT*...
my question: i saved my Skyrim game on the hard drive...can I transfer it to the a memory unit and just bring the disc and the MU to my uncles or do I have to bring the whole HD?
yeah, except whenever a new game comes out for the PS3, I put it in and play.
When a new games comes out for PC, I put it in and it tells me my videocard isn't good enough so then I replace that. Then my RAM isn't fast enough so I go to replace that and.. oh shit, I have to replace my CPU and MB cause they don't support the faster ram.
FUCK COMPUTER GAMERS.
I don't have the time/money to keep up with the joneses. I just want to play the games. and my that I mean watch 24/7 cut scenes.
And besides, all the best computer games came out in the 80s and 90s. Like metal.
my video card runs this game on high settings (looks better than 360) and was 130 bucks. instead of wasting money on faggy ipads, you could be playing games on a computer, the way they are meant to be post PSX.
any laptop that could run new games costs twice as much as a better desktop, so desktops. rev has a good point, you really need to know a lot about PC hardware and how long the shelf life of a typical setup would be. i just upgraded my computer for the first time in 4 years and not because it wasn't performing, but because i stabbed my motherboard with a screwdriver. another reason PC isn't much more reliable than a red-ringing xbox. i still went through 3 xboxes all the same before i got rid of it.

I never understood the iPad appeal. It doesn't run flash, yet it is supposed to act like a computer? FAIL.
meaning you'd either need to download a torrent for the PC version, buy it on Steam, or buy the retail PC DVD version. xbox discs only work on xbox.

Better graphics +use of a mouse + BETHESDA ORIGINALLY MADE ELDER SCROLLS GAMES FOR COMPUTERS ... That's who cares. Argument will never eeennnnnddd. Nevvvvvarrrr!!
Playing this game on xbox is like owning a rereleased Les Legions Noire album on CD. DOES NO COMPUTE
It's getting easier to pick high level locks. At first it was damn near impossible to do a master lock, but I like that they give low level characters the opportunity to try. And where are you getting lockpicks? In Oblivion, merchants had a ton of them. Now they only have a few, if you're lucky.
nude mods!
i got a sweet mod that changes the night sky to a high res real stellar photography background and keeps the constellations in the game there. another good one lets the game executable use 4GB of ram.
if you can modify a game, chances are high that you'll see nude skins eventually. I made the first nude stripper mod for GTA: Vice City, it had a ton of downloads haha

merchants didnt sell lockpicks, the only place you could buy them was from the thieves guild itself, or find them in random places.
it wasnt that really...basically i took up the game invading a vampire cave for some mission....
I laid the smack down and completed that mission but then, without warning, I'm 3/4 of the way through another random mission and the sun comes up and I'm a fucking vampire...I had no idea so I had waited a bunch of different times and was deep into my vampirism so its a huge pain in the ass to un-do it so I went all the way back to my save from the day before and just skipped the vampire cave...that wasted like 3 hours. after all that BS I did like 2 tiny wack ass misc quests before I had to fall asleep.
I finally figured out that I don't have to be all 'you wanna mess brah?' with every fucking falmer I came across. They're just belligerent Stevie Wonders.

it doesnt suck but it hinders your other questing and I havent even scratched the surface of questing....certian people wont talk to you, you get chased out of towns and shit...
Its the type of thing you wanna do after you've done like everything else in the game...then just wreak havok cause youve got nothing to lose.

yea in oblivion I love jumping from rooftop to rooftop and vampirizing niggaz. it sucks when you wanna fast travel and its day out though.
sometimes a seemingly easy stroll from this town to that cave or whatever can turn into the most frustrating non-stop barrage of stupid attacks and its so hard to stop and rest with no enemies around out in the wild.
I swear the higher your level goes up, the more random attacks take place which I think is wack. it should always stay the same.
bears and cats sometimes make noise from far away so they can be easy to spot, but they're also sneaky motherfuckers. i find myself sneaking around if i have low visibility. remember if you know how to treat giants, they will help you. the attacks aren't really random but it depends on the area you're in (i.e. fields around whiterun, versus deep forest/away from roads)
i remember in Morrowind you'd be strolling along and one of those stupid flying taradactyl looking things or like a fucking RAT would attack you and you'd fucking DIE (early on)...a fucking RAT! I'd be whacking it with a fucking mace repeatedly and it'd still kill me.
Glad they learned from that foolishness.

they're extremely territorial. don't walk under their feet. don't fuck with their mammoths. don't take their stuff. put your weapon away if you walk through their camp. i noticed at one of their camps there was some purple tree that they let me harvest some goo from.
Ok i caved, and got this sooner than i planned because I happened to be right next to the gamestop and figured i would renew my 5 dollar reservation. Its a great game, more addicting than i thought it would be. My only issues are predictably with the combat system. Its needs a lock on feature when you are close up. 3rd person is feels retarded even though i prefer that viewpoint usually. I wish there was some way to dodge and have it take stamina. Also does hitting someone in the head do more damage?
post by ark at Nov 16,2011 3:55pm
the combat is no dark souls for sure. it is different. i don't like 3rd person in this game. it's possible to dodge attacks but you have to predict how their swing is going and you don't get a speed bonus, you just have to be damn good. head damage does do more. i guess there's a reason you can't lock on, you are just supposed to land your hits and you don't get any help. i could be wrong, but dodging might be a perk in one of the skill trees. i know decapitations are in the "two-handed" skill tree. i think there's a quick dodge in the "sneak" skill tree but i'm not sure what it does.
I've noticed that as well. You mean they'll say something like "I can't best you," and stay on there hands and knees? I slice those fuckers up anyways.

Yes, but be sure not to read the comments after, as most contain complaints about how badly broken the PC interface is, and how the game appears to be another console version ported to PC as far as interface, display, and graphics are concerned.
there's no doubt a few console genes that screw up the PC version. it's not THAT bad, not at all. i've noticed some quirks especially with the crafting windows.
just go to shroud hearth barrow, you get a shout that will make animals not attack you.
I actually chose the power at the start to control animals but haven't been making use of it much. I'm trying to level up my conjuration so I can just summon a tank whenever I need one. Right now I can only conjure a familiar which is way too weak to do anything.
I just started using destruction and conjuration magic. Pretty fun when dual wielded with melee. I still love sneaking with the bow though. and now I dont have to bother with a heavy ass shield.
so I'm lik e25 hours into this and have yet to see a single sign of any of those "standing stones." WTF
That's because you fast travel.
...ohhhhhhhh!
I mainly meant that because once I had logged over 100 hours in Oblivion and found damn near all the locations I didnt see the need to take 45 minutes walking from one place to another. I only use it occasionally now. I even cheated and looked up where one of the stones was and looked for 30 minutes and found nothing. I AM FAIL
I climbed the mountain to the Gray beards and got my new yells. Now I'm on the quest they sent me on. I got rocked by giant spiders and a fire floor before I gave up last night. I hope I'm not moving to fast through the game withought improving my abilities.
A "tank" meaning any character strong enough to take the AI's focus off of me and attack them instead for an extended period of time. Right now the AI will attack the summoned wolf I have but it gets hit like once and dies.

Run into the left corner, watch the small spiders die. The big spider is a bitch, but can be taken down with a spell easily. You can run from it too. But the horn aint there.
The horn isn't there? Fuck me. Lydia got taken out by two wizards for nothing. ....but I aint mad.
post by Large Negro Kitty at Nov 17,2011 4:41pm
For the guy looking for the tank:
Go to Falkreath. Walk outside town and find the talking dog, Barbas.
Don't complete his quest.
You now have a completely invincible dog that draws aggro like mad and doesn't count as a follower. So not only is he the perfect tank, but you can still bring another follower along to make a nice little party.
I finally finished the dog quest, and was amazed at how much harder the game/combat got without him.
post by Large Negro Kitty at Nov 17,2011 4:45pm
At one point I went outside and walked into the kitchen. Didn't realize there was a dragon outside. I heard the commotion and ran back into the living room to find I was completely unharmed, whilst the doggy and Lydia had fought the dragon without me and killed it on their own.
Was outside whiterun doors and saw a party of 4 people walking, went to talk to them and realized it says "hired thug" they proceeded to gang bang the shit out of my poor corpse. I decided to get lydia to help me after that....
yea those hired thugs are bitches though, when you see em coming just sneak attack. the dark broz ass's are even easier.
The spook assasins looking for the girl? Yeah i gotta kill them. I plan on being in the dark brother hood though cause im going with that sort of character. I'm only level 8.
my ex loved watching me play oblivion but didnt ever want to play which was cool.
I havent met this lydia bitch yet. Level 23 as of last night. Got a lot of work done and started a quest helping some dude find ancient Daedra artifacts from the Oblivion days. HAIL DAGON.
Layed the smack down on a dragon and found a silly sword: sword of cowardess or some shit...everyone i hit with it flees from the fight for 30 seconds hahah...its kinda stupid.

Any of you guys see the sanctuary yet? I had to get sap from a tree. It was beautiful. I took screen shots.
Ark, I upgraded it with the detailed faces and bodies patch. Do that up, they look way better. Only problem is that I had the nude patch and they dont agree. So right now the women have boobs that look like dirty skin with no nipples, and they have giant gaping assholes. LOL
I did the sanctuary...took me a while to figure out that I had to cut at the roots to get past.
post by ark at Nov 18,2011 8:31am
the ol' eldergleam tree? i didn't expect that place, that was awesome. haven't tried the n00ds yet.
i'm level 23 too. my girl likes watching RPGs. she only ever wants to play when there's butterflies or leeks to collect.
anybody who's done the companions quests, what's the first companions quest? they say they've given me work, but i forgot which quest they gave me! the only thing about the journal is it's not as detailed as it was in oblivion so it's easy to forget where you got quests from....
I dont even see a journal!? I've looked before... in oblivion you could re-read the conversation you just had, couldnt you?
post by arilliusbm at Nov 18,2011 8:43am edited Nov 18,2011 8:44am
Yes, I've been werewolfing it up for some time. I can't remember what the first mission was. lvl 20 here. I've yet to see any ebony or glass weapons yet.
Lydia died during the first battle I took her into :|
Lydia's been my main bitch, FOR AT LEAST THREE MONTHS.
In all seriousness though, she hasn't died on me. I only got about 16 hours in due to not being home this week but she's proven to be a badass companion thus far.
Going through mage college (UMass Skyrim) missions so I can get J'zargo (a cat that's a master of destruction lol)
post by ark at Nov 18,2011 10:06am
i need a mage companion.
andrew i guess the "journal" is just the quest log. i wish there was more detailed journals/logs like morrowind.
post by Large Negro Kitty at Nov 18,2011 10:21am
If you want a mage companion, you can also get one by completing the Black Star quest. I recommend you do this quest RIGHT AWAY if you do enchanting or use enchanted weapons. After you complete it you get either the black star - a refillable, reusable black soul gem or the Azuras Star - same thing, but it's a white soul gem. - black traps humanoid souls, white traps animal/creature souls
If you choose the azuras star ending (turn in at the altar) you get to keep the mage woman there as a companion.
I cannot say enough - do this quest EARLY as the higher level you get - the final fight of the quest can be IMPOSSIBLE. And the soul gem can be a huge game changer for people looking to do enchants. With a common soul gem, for example, I can enchant my armor for +2 health. The same enchant with the black star gives me +33 health. And it's REUSABLE.
I'm sure you're right. She's workin' out for me for now though. One day I'll dig a ditch and bury the bitch.
Be aware - I've read online of at least two reports that it is possible
to have your house robbed by NPC's. Since learning this, I dismissed
Lydia and now she guards my house in whitecarl full time. Creepy thing
is, she has her own bedroom there but she hangs out in mine instead.
I think Lydia is into the inter-species sex thing. Once you go negro kitty,
you never go back.
Once you buy the house in Whiterun it will be her default home whether she's following you or not.
Im gonna get the gf all drugged out on turkey and box wine til she passes out so I can play Skyrim all night.
everyone missed the point
post by Large Negro Kitty at Nov 18,2011 11:25am
I started buying houses after I read the warning from bethesda that the only
way to guarantee your shit doesn't disappear is to buy a house. I dunno if it's
intentional or a bug, but bethesda even put a warning in the manual this time
around saying that using containers you do not own can cause your shit to
disappear. I'm not taking that risk. I've probably got 10,000 in weapons
stashed in my house.
Also, having your own alchemy lab in your house, shelves filled with all
your books, a blacksmith next door, all my crafting goods, etc... is more
convenient to me than jumping town to town to get stuff done.
Now I just wish I could get an enchanting lab in the house, so I can stop having to run to Anise's cabin to get my enchanting done.
Also, DO NOT SELL YOUR CRAPPY WEAPONS WITHOUT ENCHANTING THEM FIRST.
Even using crappy lesser and petty gems, you can create an iron dagger
worth 10G, enchant it with a petty gem, and it will sell for 700G instead of
10G. In other words, take 100 iron ore, 100 leather/strips, and you can
craft 100 iron daggers, raise your skill like 50 points, enchant them, and
sell them for about 70,000G depending on your speechcraft. All for around
1000G in materials.
If you've been skipping or selling your shitty iron daggers and such, you're
losing out.
I havent met this lydia bitch yet. Level 23 as of last night.
WTF, isn't it one of the first quests in the main storyline?
You shouldn't veer off so quickly. The first few quests (graybeards, courier/black star quest, etc...) give you perks
that can be pretty integral as you level early on. For instance, the
black star wouldn't be nearly as useful once I was in elite armor and
done crafting/enchanting/leveling skills.
i did the first few grey beards quests but know nothing of this black star quest youre talking about.
post by Large Negro Kitty at Nov 18,2011 12:01pm
Trying to think of what happened.
I BELIEVE that when you do a shout outdoors the first time or something,
a courier brings you some sort of letter. Whatever it is, it puts Azura's temple
on my map. If you go there, you meet a mage who sends you on a daedric
quest chain that ends with you getting a daedric artifact - black star or Azuras
star.
post by Large Negro Kitty at Nov 18,2011 12:03pm
Lydia quest is started I believe the first time you visit the Jarl in Whiterun.
When you arrive in town his soldier lady (lydia) tells him they saw a Dragon.
He asks you to follow her and help her fight the dragon since you have the
most experience with dragons. When you finish that quest he gives you Lydia.
I BELIEVE that when you do a shout outdoors the first time or something,
a courier brings you some sort of letter. Whatever it is, it puts Azura's temple
on my map. If you go there, you meet a mage who sends you on a daedric

Actually, I think I'm confusing a bunch of quests together.
SOMETHING put the temple on my map. And when I walked there it started
the quest. I think the courier thing was something else.
I think I did that Lydia quest and then decline her invitation to join me?
I have tons of random notes from couriers I haven't read yet.
Accept it. Even if you don't want her as a follower, she's like a free guard
dog for your house once you buy it. She's not a typical follower, she's a PRESENT. ;)
ok question for xboxers: you can have 2 preset weapon sets on your d-pad left and right by going to favorites and holding either left or right, but when I try to set two things, say flames and sword, to one direction it just does either one or the other, not both, so when i click left or right on the d pad it will quick switch to only one weapon instead of dual wielding. this seems like either Im doing something wrong or its just a huge game design flaw, because if you cant quick switch to a dual wield then whats the point? you quick switch to say a sword and you still have to open the menu to select a shield? WTF
post by Large Negro Kitty at Nov 18,2011 12:30pm
ur doin it wrong.
It's not for switching item sets. It's for, say, switching quickly to a weapon
with a Soul Trap enchant in time for the killing blow. Or say you're dual wielding
maces. You set your bow to left d-pad. Now you can hit one button and whip
out your bow, take a shot, then hit the same button and rush back in with your
maces in hand.
yea but if im dual wielding and i switch to bow, when i switch back its not dual wielding anymore, because it only lets you select one weapon per button
post by Large Negro Kitty at Nov 18,2011 12:54pm
nope, if you hit the button again it goes back to exactly what you had before.
yea I see it now. you can't set a specific dual wield, but whatever you were wielding last with the weapon/spell you have selected will show up.

I love getting a quest for something I've already done.
Questgiver: Go get me this artifact in some dangerous cavern.
Large Negro Kitty: You mean THIS artifact right here?
QG: Wow, you really are the shit, my man! Here, take my money!
so i've learned some new words and killed a bunch of dragons but I can only use 2 shouts. what's the deal? i'm too lazy to look it up online
Had the same problem. Ark addressed it above but in the magic menu under shouts you hit x on the shout that's locked to spend a dragonsoul.
post by blessed offal nli at Nov 20,2011 11:09pm
you have to collect dragon souls (by killing dragons) and then you can 'spend' them by hitting x. once you have a soul, go to shouts and highlight it and hit 'x' or whatever button it says to spend it on whatever shout you want to use.
also, I really like the dungeons in this game, MUCHHHHH less repetitive dungeon crawling than in oblivion. bravo, bethesda. but seriously, no repair skills and weapon durability? GAY

Haha Drinking contest quest starting in whiterun funny as shit. Wake up across the world in some strange city. Got mad that the priestly types were making me clean up my mess that i made while black out drunk in their house so i proceed to pickpocket the head womens key and go into the inner secret area and steal religion artifacts, get caught , kill the priests, run through city laughing. This game is fun.
post by AndrewBastard at Nov 21,2011 7:47am edited Nov 21,2011 7:49am
I mentioned that quest ^^^ up there. it turns into quite an ordeal...
last night I got TONS of short-ass misc quests done including one where I had to eat another human being on a sacrificial alter. Before I said yes to taking a bite, I googled the mission because I didnt want it to turn me into a fucking zombie or someshit where I have to kill and eat people to survive the rest of the fucking game...
I had to follow blood splatters on the ground to search for clues.
also an annoying bug where I couldnt get out of this one dungeon. this gate was closed and I pull the chain and it wouldnt open...FINALLY i googled that too and it was a bug; had to turn the xbox off and back on. as SOON as it loaded, i pulled the chain and the gate opened right up. Weird.
also I cleared out the Lost Knife Cave right near the beginning of the game it was kind of challenging cause I was such a low level character at the time....last night some dude asked me to kill the leader of The Lost Knife cave so I look at the map and it says "CLEARED" right next to that cave but for some reason I had to go back there and all the dudes were BACK. I beat the shit out of that entire cave in like 2 mins cause I'm now a one hit wonder on these weak ass bandits but I still thought it odd that I had to clear it out a second time.
I can't believe Martins is talking about a game that's primarily 1st person.
Just found my first ebony and glass items last night. The glass armor looks pretty sweet.
post by ark at Nov 21,2011 9:10am
almost level 31. i found the secret of red eagle's tomb. i'm becoming a surgeon with two handers. despite this, some enemies are CRAZY hard (i'm playing on expert). i just found the secret of red eagle's tomb and some insane ebony armor with stamina regen. but if i wasn't able to go werewolf and toss red eagle around like a ragdoll, while my mage companion blasted him 1,000 times, i could not have stood up to him in melee combat. no way.
MUCHHHHH less repetitive dungeon crawling than in oblivion.
yeah, i was surprised they could even pull this off. it's a given that you're going to mostly explore ancient nord ruins, so i figured they would look the exact same everywhere. NOT SO. i've found one dwarven ruin so far too. couldn't beat the last robot motherfucker in it yet.
I'm only playing on the medium difficulty though. I dont know how you're doing it on the hardest level. There are some enemies on the medium level that can hit me TWICE and I'm done.
post by ark at Nov 21,2011 9:57am
it's not even the hardest setting, i think "master" is. i was going for a high survivability build from the start, with heavy armor and restoration magic. i have NO IDEA how i could have made it this far in the game without the fighter/cleric build.
I have like 15k but haven't even seen a house for sale...do I have to talk to someone?
if you've done some quests for a jarl, talk to his steward. usually they would tell you "i will now let you buy a house in the city" after you complete stuff for them
I loot like a motherfucker. I would have way more but my game is suffering the thieves guild glitch which prevents me from getting a fence for all the stolen shit. The next patch will fix this.
My character is focused on archery, sneak, destruction magic, and one handed, currently level 26 and kicking ass with J'zargo.
post by ark at Nov 21,2011 10:13am
skill training, smithing and enchanting supplies, and a house. you never need to buy gear.
I think I have a fence in the thieve guild...some broad. but I dont steal much...most of my gold is just from adventuring and looting dead bodies/chests etc.
I just barely ever spend money....what do you need to spend it on?
Besides soul gems and the occasional potion, I find/steal all my armor/weapons...
I dont think I've PURCHASED a single piece of armor or weaponry...
dude dont buy soul gems, just rob the arch mage of the college in winterhold. I got like 25 greater soul gems filled with souls. I havnt really spent much money either, except on training for skills.
Im playing on a hard difficulty and am lvl 20. they made melee a bit harder in this one, because Ill be acein' niggaz left and right and then one big two-handed-hammer-wielding cat will hit me and Ill just fall into a pile of jello. I still say they shouldve gave you some kind of quick switch thing.
post by ark at Nov 21,2011 11:02am
with a controller you can hold right or left on the Dpad to store weapon sets. haven't actually tried this
I havent tried that witht he D-Pad unless youre talking about the "favorites" option...I used that for like a few hours when I first started...now I just do it the long way
post by blessed offal nli at Nov 21,2011 12:01pm
I use the favorites but the quickswitch is only 1/4 as useful as it coulda been if theyd done it right. like ill be using my bow and get rushed so ill hit the button to quick switch to melee but for some reason, only my weapon comes up so I still have to go into the menu and get the shield out. its not a huge deal but it makes it alot more tedious than it needed to be. they coulda gotten rid of the third person view, made it so you can see your char in the menu, and made the right stick button a quick switch menu.
I wouldve totally prefered this on the computer, however, i have a shitty 5 year old laptop with a bare bones video card and no sound card. I do however have an xbox 360 that i got for 60 bucks and a giant HDMI tv.
Right now I'm dual wielding a cheeseburger and a beer before leaving for work in an hour.
I haven't messed too much with magic except fire spells have been very helpful with frost trolls (duh). In oblivion I never really fucked with magic except for unlock spells.
I can't believe Martins is talking about a game that's primarily 1st person.
Just found my first ebony and glass items last night. The glass armor looks pretty sweet.
Haha I've been playing Battlefield 3 on PC too. WHAT HAS THIS WORLD COME TO?!?!?!
Seriously Skyrim is great. I can't wait to get home tonight get those last 8 levels in smithing and make me some epic dragon armor.
I had a blade sword that had an attack power of 27 or so. Upgraded it and it had 33. Just sayin
post by ark at Nov 21,2011 3:05pm
take all that cash you got and invest in smithing. smith the hell out of everything. you use weapons and armor, you should be smithing. get a pickaxe and mine ore veins you come across. pick up every ingot you see.
Oh you guys, my maces are in the 80s each. I'm also level like 80-something with one handedz. My Mace of Molag Bal also fills soul gems if I kill the enemy in under 3 seconds... which is pretty much everyone. It was an awesome mission to get that mace too.
Every day, the chick and guy blacksmith couple at whiterun have fresh ingots and
leather in their inventories. Every time I finish a quest, I sell all my loot and then
buy out every scrap they both have. Go forge iron daggers (1 ingot, 1 leather).
Then ENCHANT THE DAGGERS!!!! You'll level your smithing in no time, and your
enchanting will increase right along with it. Bonus? Each dagger with enchants
will sell for something like 600G.
It shouldn't be expensive. You should be profiting like a motherfucker off smithing.
The trick is the enchants. It raises the price from 10G to 600G.
post by Large Negro Kitty at Nov 21,2011 9:40pm
Should mention - fire enchant on the daggers is what gets me 600G. Any size gem
will give you the same enchant strength/value. Unlike armor enchants, which get
stronger with stronger gems. So you can do this with a bunch of shitty petty gems.
i never pick up the ignots or whatever theyre called when I see them...
Mining or looting will take forever. Just buy them. Only craft shitty iron daggers to start.
They require the least materials, so you can level your skills FAST. Then, you can
pretty much level the shit out of any weapon or armor you want.

i havnt even come across a single enchantment yet. how are you people leveling so damn fast? christ ive logged like 27 hours and apparently im not even a lvl 2 nerd
post by Large Negro Kitty at Nov 21,2011 11:55pm
You learn enchantments by disenchanting enchanted stuff. All the shitty low level daggers, maces, etc... with enchantments can be disenchanted, and then you know how to do that enchantment to stuff. So the first time I find an item with a new enchantment, I don't use it, I just disenchant it.
post by Large Negro Kitty at Nov 22,2011 12:00am
If you've logged 27 hours and you're level 2, you likely have a shit-ton of level ups. Have you gone into your skills menu and leveled? I've got like 40 hours or something and just hit level 29.
When you can level up, you actually have to go in and level up.
I accidently joined the imperial legion last night and part of the quest is wearing their armor. F THAT. My thieves guild armor is the bomb digs.
the legion guards keep being like "now you can change out of those rags" when I walk by. FUCK YOUR ARMOR.
Also, I had an EPIC "FINISH HIM" style kill on a dragon last night where I was like riding its head and jammed my sword through its skull from the top.
There are over 20 unusual gems littered across Skyrim, Alx. They all make a crown. Kind of like collecting the Secret Seashells in Zelda: Link's Awakening.
That's thieves guild. At least the person who told me what the unusual gem was was in the thieves guild. I don't know if anyone else would have appraised it.
in skyrim life, i am now the thane of whiterun and the wielder of the ghostblade. they call me bonebreaker. in real life, the registration on my car is completely fucked. i ain't even mad.

Just found my first Dwarven ruin. I was so worried when people said the guardian guys were tough. HA! One shotting everything in sight. And the loot is great in the dwarven ruins - sucky part is I didn't realize the chests were chests until about halfway through the dungeon. They look like decorations, not chests.
So, apparently I missed Clavicus Vile's mask because I assumed the Rueful Axe was the Daedric artifact in "A Daedra's Best Friend" quest. I already saved over that particular save so there is no going back. My question is, is it possible to still get the achievement? I've read somewhere that it might be possible to miss one and still get the achievement but I can't find a solid, confirmed answer on this. The one thing I have going for me is that I have both the Ring of Hircine and the Saviour's Hide from the "Ill Met by Moonlight" quest. i whisted for a cab and when it came near the license plate said fresh and had dice in the irror
if anything i could say that this cab was rare but i thought nah, forget it yo home to bel-air! i-pulled- up tp a house about seven or eight i yelled to the cabbie yo home, smell you later looked at my kingdom i was finally there to sit on my throne as the prince of bel-air
shits fun as hell. Plus you get to lay the smackdown on 3 halpins..i mean hagravens.

Think I started that chain, but I'm not doing it right now. I know I made it to the bard college and had to help write a poem with some dude. Then he forced me to listen to him read the whole thing.
I did a mission in Riften about recovering a stolen horse. I did all the tasks but the quest won't go away. It also won't locate it on the map. Glitch, I think.
post by blessed offal nli at Nov 22,2011 11:48am
seriously I get nothing done in this game because I just get baked and look at stuff. this is the first game ive ever played on a big ass HDTV cuz I used to just have my shitty 24" tube tv from like 96, so I can't get over how good everything looks. Instead of doing quests I'm just wandering around going 'woooooooooahhhhh mayyyyyyyyyannnnnnnnnn, look at those epic treeeeeeees mayyyyyyyyyan'
I needed 2 more levels in restoration to get a perk, so I stripped naked and jumped up and down in a smith's forge while healing myself. Got my two levels.
Bonus - the entire town gathered around to watch, comment, and bob their heads in unison. Looked like a typical Metal thursday. Especially the guy saying "you should really try putting your clothed on before you leave the house next time".

this happens to me sometimes...
also, you knopw how it'll say "cleared" next to caves and forts you've wiped out? It says that on a a bunch of mine but there are others that I have COMPLETELY emptied out and it still doesnt say "cleared" next to it...it annoys me because I honestly want to try to do EVERYTHING in this game.

I feel lost. I am level 30, with pretty even stamina, health, and magick. I dual wield maces, wear heavy armor, and use a lot of destruction and restoration spells. Where should I be spending the rest of my shit, on stamina, health, or magic? I think I'm somewhere between 200-300 on all 3 right now.
There is a new 1.2 Patch coming up. Plus a very big DLC with a new Main Quest as big as the Skyrim Dragon Chronicle Quest, details regarding the DLC are not yet known.
Regarding the 1.2 Patch, there have been a few details claiming what “might” be included. Here is a small list:
1. Missing Horse, Minion and Ally Health will be restored and shown on the hud.
2. Fast Travel Options will be enhanced.
3. Minor Lagging for ATI Graphic cards with Quality set to High or Ultimate will be enhanced.
4. Missing Passive Spells and Effects timers will be restored and shown on the hud.
5. Fix the issue with AMD Drivers where Blue Screen of Death Appeared for PC users.
6. Improve world load processing, reducing the number of lags when many new particles appear.
etc . . .
This was as much as we could provide from our Bethesda Insider, if more news comes up will post, or update the news.
only one quest last night but it took me like 1.5 hours...had to rescue some wizard in a HUGE camp of forsworn...the whole time an Elder Dragon was fucking shit up.
Once I killed off the forsworn it took like 15 mins to kill that dragon with arrows...my bow is enchanted and does 21 damage but still it was tedious as hell.
also, anyone do that crazy nightmare quest in the wing of blue palace where you get the Wabajack as a weapon? shits bananas.
Love how he confuses Bethesda and Blizzard, Skyrim and WoW.

i've been treating this shit like the olympics. actual playing time is ~60. level 34 and have been losing sleep in dungeons lately. i'm trying to switch from being warrior to thief and it's going nicely. been drinking with the ark family all day and now it's time to PLAY

Me and lydia are decked out in full dragon armor. Maxxed out smithing. I one hit most everything. In fact, I now have a problem with lydia killing everything before I get to hit it at all.
Question: I have 60,000 Gold. What the fuck do I buy with it?

Im pretty sure the toughest enemies in this game are bears.
post by Large Negro Kitty at Nov 26,2011 1:20pm
Investment perk is worth it. One vendor took 500G from me. Now every other day he's got 10,000G in his inventory. So much easier than bouncing to a million different vendors.
post by Large Negro Kitty at Nov 26,2011 1:21pm
Bears are really easy. The cats are a little tougher.
If you have trouble with bears, stay out of dwarven ruins. Trust the negro kitty. You're gonna hate dwarven centurion masters.
post by blessed offal nli at Nov 26,2011 1:38pm
I don't have a problem with them, Im just sayimng I kill everything no problem, dragons barely hurt me, trolls, etc, but it takes me like 5 minutes to kill a bear for some reason.
I haven't died on days. I kill bears like butter melts.

I'm loving the stormcloak rebellion. the siege on whiterun was killer, mainly because I did it later on in the game and was a high level so I just kinda walked in like I was darth vader burning all the guards one hit style.
fuck the empire.

A tip:
Lydia/companions -
1) if you target them from a little ways away and hold X, it will enter command mode instantly (instead of having to talk to her first).
2) Companions HAVE NO CARRYING LIMIT, as long as you tell them to pick it up!
Only think is, sometimes when you do this the loot will show up as stolen. (i.e. - having lydia take all from a chest, etc...) so you cannot vend it without the appropriate perk or a fence.

What initiates this quest? Sounds like a lot of fun.

you just have to join the stormcloak rebellion its like the third quest in after youve become a stormcloak. Talk to the jarl in windhelm
I got an elven frost damage bow. My sneak is 55 but I have an amulet that increases sneak 20% and a jester hat which fortifies sneak by 35%. I killed a dude undetected when I was right in front of him. Hide ya kids hide ya wife.
i cant fucking kill this red eagle dude...he's like 2 hits and im DONE.
Haven't found him yet. Have you tried using the unrelenting force shout to stun him? That's worked really well against powerful enemies.

the stormcloaks give you a sword that does 27 dmg +25 fire dmg kinda early on. but youre a traitorous imperial

My ebony mace and sword do around 90 damage each with enchants.
post by AndrewBastard NLI at Nov 27,2011 8:18pm
Yeah dude...i think i fought on the OPPOSiTE side as you during that siege you mentioned earlier... had to protect the kingdom during an attack...it was wicked easy,
Superior Ebony bow plus enchants = 62 damage plus 15 fire damage. Having the master of destruction cat roll in on people is worth it mainly because of his ridiculous moustache. Just bought a house in Riften, it came with some spiteful woman named Iona. I left her cooking me a stew that I will not eat, let her contemplate her demeanor by her lonesome. Level 32
Level 99 one handed with legendary ebony and daedric maces and a bunch of shit with fortify one handed stacked to about 50% bonus. I rape everything. Need to give myself another difficulty boost up to master.

that sucks. it seems like every problem i've had with the game, i've been able to find a fix somewhere. hit some random quest bugs here and there that had solutions.
i've been playing on master difficulty since the beginning. it makes you level up faster because the battles take SO DAMN LONG and you don't stop swinging, casting, and running. i hit level 40 and i'm not even close to done with the 3 main quest lines i'm on.
Its funny like 90% of the enemies I encounter I can drop with ease but every now and then I run into a "boss" or a dragon or SOMETHING that just fucks me up in seconds.
I am curious about Martin's time playing this game.
I'm at 46 hrs
How have you leveled up smithing so fast?
post by Large Negro Kitty at Nov 28,2011 6:44pm
Dragons are getting out-of-control. Seems like every time I try to go from city to city to sell stuff I get jumped by an Elder Dragon. Which sucks, because those fuckers just fly around killing all the town vendors while lydia shoots arrows at it. Being 90% melee leaves me screwed.
Wondering if I should just finish the main questline. I assume once finished it will be bye bye dragons.
Smithing is incredibly easy to level. I already explained how. Just make iron daggers. LOTS of iron daggers. Buy the ingots and leather from the blacksmith.
Took me about a day of really trying to max out smithing.
Enchanting, on the other hand, takes fucking forever.

also its cool that you can give lydia a better weapon than she originally had to carry, and she just automatically starts using it...

There's this annoying quest bug with the Companions - you're sent to bring back a witch's head, when you get back to Whiterun, the Silver Hand has attacked The Companions, everyone is huddled over the dead bodies and the questgiver won't advance the story. It has something to do with the Helm of Winterhold and/or Driftshade Refuge, neither of which I'm able to get any quests for, and basically it's annoying as fuck because I'm stuck as a werewolf (which really isn't all that bad)... hopefully the upcoming patch fixes this.

You use the witch head at the last companion quest. Hold onto it.
After completion of 'Blood's Honor', you return to Jorrvaskr to hand in your quest to find that the Silver Hand has attacked. After entering, you will recieve completion of your quest from Vilkas, after the dialogue, there is no option to start the new quest; breaking the Companions story-line from progressing. Confirmed many times on (PC, 360) Also occurs on PS3.
I had this happen to me. Then I noticed the place where the next quest is supposed to happen, is the same place where the Jarl of the magic city sends you to get a crown.
If you don't do the crown quest before "Blood's Honor", you get bugged. (has this been confirmed?)
(Which once again proves the "Misc > Side > Main" priority is still around )
I had this happen to me, and I didn't have the quest for the crown. However, I cleared the dungeon where it takes place before getting the quest, and I believe that caused the bug.207.91.153.186 21:19, November 17, 2011 (UTC)
PROBLEM SOLVED (PC)
{C I had this problem because i had already cleared out driftshade refuge while i was just adventuring, not knowing it was a quest location. this is how i fixed it:
1) wait 30 in-game days (this will respawn all enemies in driftshade refuge)
2) go to console, type 'player.setstage c05 0'
quest started!
well ok, i'll try this.

Playing a pure mage, at 39 I'm pretty much unstoppable. Dont even need to summon critters anymore, just straight up destruction. I might start over as an archer-thief.
The only quest bug I think I've had so far is the one in mage college where you help the student with her experiments. The step is "wait for the spell effects to wear off" but that was like 20 levels ago and I can't see a way to progress it, and no dialogue helps.

So far the patch hasn't done shit for me EXCEPT clean up all the dead dragons I've left lying all over. Which annoys me - I thought the 3-4 Dragon skeletons littered about the mage school was pretty epic.
Meanwhile still lagging after playing a while, lydia and other companions still don't have a health bar (makes healing so fun), and no bug fixes that I've seen yet.
Hopefully there's another bigger patch in the works.

In Oblivion lore, where do the kitties stand? Everyone talks about the redguard, the elves, the mages, etc... - but no one ever mentions the kitties. Only ones I've even seen was the little traveling camp of them way out west near the "M" city. (forget the name)
Kitties are seen as thieves and scoundrels so no one likes them.
On the status thing, I've visited plenty of shrines since then, there is no status effect, there's no spell to wear off, I think that's the problem. No way for it to advance. I can only guess I must've cleared it instantly before it had a chance to wear off.
post by Large Negro Kitty at Nov 29,2011 11:23am
What's the name of that quest? I haven't gotten it. Wonder if the chick is the one that died in the main mage quest storyline, thus why I never got that quest?
The beast races (Khajiit and Argonian included) are extremely rare in Skyrim, and some players might enjoy the fact of being unique in Skyrim. Khajiit, however, are racially discriminated in certain cities like Whiterun-and Khajiit caravans are forced to take up business outside of the city walls. The exception is, of course, the Dragonborn-as they can enter the city after talking to the guards like anyone else.
post by Large Negro Kitty at Nov 29,2011 11:27am
Wow, ironic the only Kitty allowed in Whiterun is the Negro Kitty.
skyrim is locked tight to coloreds like imperial russia or the deep south. khajiit are like the "arab traders" of tamriel. elves are different azn flavors. redguards, africans. bretons and imperials are obvious. nords, well i'm not sure what they're supposed to be. any ideas?
you playing on console, kitty? maybe you should install more RAM. LOL rite.
post by Large Negro Kitty at Nov 29,2011 11:42am
Playing on PS3.
It's not a RAM issue - PC has the same bug. There's a memory leak/hole. Playing a marathon session makes the game slow down and lag over time.
post by lost ark at Nov 29,2011 11:44am
my lag and crashes were fixed by getting a skyrim executable that was patched to use 4GB RAM (the original .exe was only allowed to use something like 1GB). no crashes or lag since then.
I have prettyhigh smithing but honestly dont even use anything I make. I cant seem to figure out enchanting.
I use all weapons and armor I make/enchant myself. As Martins suggested, working on crafting a Daedric set right now.
For enchanting, it's easy. When you start collecting a good amount of soul gems, don't sell them. Go to a place with an Arcane Enchanter to enchant. (I use Anise's cabin).
There's two things you can enchant - weapons and apparel/armor. Different Soul Gems effect these two categories differently.
With Armor/apparel, the bigger/better the soul the bigger/better the numbers. So for example using a petty soul to enchant your helm with +magika will add 3 magika. Using a GRAND soul will add 30 magika.
With weapons, the damage will not vary as much. Instead, the number of charges will vary. So with a petty soul, your mace will do +16 fire damage for 80 charges, while with a grand soul you'll do +16 damage for 300 charges.
As for soul gems, the most confusing part is that a larger soul gem can hold a smaller soul. For instance, an empty grand soul gem can trap a petty soul. Annoying as fuck when I fill my Black Star and find out it's charged with petty soul.
Does that all make sense? Trying to explain it made me realize it really IS a complicated pain in the ass.
my lag and crashes were fixed by getting a skyrim executable that was patched to use 4GB RAM (the original .exe was only allowed to use something like 1GB). no crashes or lag since then.
Sorry, you're right. The PC was already fixed. Issue is on PS3 only. Patch was supposed to fix it, but did not.
For example, I start in Whiterun and I can walk around with no problems. If I play for 6 hours whiterun becomes a laggy shitty nightmare.
My arrows are one shot kills with pretty much any animal, only bosses and dragonburns need follow-up shots.
Christianni has a bow that does 354 damage. Fucking ridiculous.
post by Large Negro Kitty at Dec 1,2011 11:58am
I think damage is largely determined by your skill level and smithing. For example, my bows do like 30 damage even when I improve them, but my maces currently do close to 100 damage each. And my 1 handed is still relatively low - it levels SLOW when you one hit everything. :(

Best way to lvl up is to fight tough enemies. When youre under lvl35, giants are good for leveling up your character. As long as they dont toss you into space.
post by arktourO‘s brand cereal puffs at Dec 1,2011 12:03pm
all you wimps compaling about one-hits need to play on master. with all the shouts, abilities, and exploits you can pull on npc's, the game is too easy otherwise.
yea man, I have it on master and still cant get experience except against bosses. games too easy, and then theyll throw in like one wicked hard boss every now and then.
post by Arrilusbum at Dec 1,2011 12:09pm
I'm not complaining about one-hits. I'm complaining that all my strength is melee, so when the stupid dragon won't land I'm screwed. Not only does my bow do jack shit for damage, I also cannot aim for shit. I need to raise my destruction skill. For now, Elder dragons just keep raping me. I have about 20,000G worth of stuff to sell but I can't even set foot in Riverwood.
Aril - I'm level 37 or 38 right now. My ranged is waaaay behind. I never use a bow, and rarely use my destruction spells.

I thought level 50 also. But I'm nearly 40, and it seems like there is so much stuff left to the game.
haha shit no...i was just beat as shit...worked 12 hours, got home, feasted and turned Skyrim on. I was playing laying down under my covers and I assume I just crashed while it was loading something...i dont even remember.
Yes and companions stay at the level you are when you meet then. They don't level up with you.
That's interesting. When Lydia was still alive (may she rest in peace) she was way better than I was at killing shit. I'm not that good at the game as it is though.
I think its dumb that enemies level up with you in games...
Some should be weak, some should be strong and everywhere in between and if you get into a quest and cant beat the enemies, you move on to easier quests until youre strong enough to go back and beat them.
oh well........
also, I'm pretty sure Lydia died on me fighting an elder dragon last night before I fell asleep.
Those mercs you can hire in Inns etc, are they the same as Lydia? like they last until they die or do they only last for a few days or something?
im pretty sure Ive had the star of azura for a long time now, but it does nothing, and I randomly murdered all of the people at the shrine of azura so what do I do?

Large Negro Kitty addressed it above. You need to go to the bar in um... Winterhold I believe. There is a mage there who will transport you into the star to defeat the dude who bound his soul to it. Once you kill him, you have a reusable soul gem. You could also take it to the shrine of azura but you already killed them. Only human souls will fill the gem since you can only go to the guy in winterhold.

from the wiki
Followers stagger and kneel when their health reaches zero, and will automatically revive after a short time.
When the Follower gets downed all the enemies will stop attacking them and attack the player.
Followers can be killed by you while kneeling.
Most characters that you can marry can become a follower as well (not all, though).
Followers in Skyrim are set to your level the first time they spawn.
Follower also can be made to steal things, wait in certain areas, sit in chairs, or attack people for you. This can be very useful if you don't possess the skills on your own. Note that if you make a follower steal an item or attack a passive NPC you still acquire the bounty.
Most followers can become Blades, and will be given a free set of Blades armor and a Blades sword. This can be done to up to 3 followers by speaking to Delphine at Sky Haven Temple.
If you start the quest Alduin's Wall and let Esbern and Delphine follow you to the objective you effectively gain two extra human followers who can not die permanently so long as you do not actually attempt to complete the quest. If this is combined with the conjuration perk twin souls, a traditional follower and the purchase of a dog you can bring the total number of creatures following and fighting for you up to six. This can however make it difficult at times to backtrack through doors and passages. (actually you can with skill 90 in conjuration reanimate two conjurors / summoners and have them summon additional two minions in addition with Shadowmare, bring you up to a total of 9 followers)
If told to wait, a follower will wait for about 3 days before they get tired and leave you, they will return to their home or the location you found them in on their own.

Just found a shitty quest bug in Markarth (Dwarf city?)
There's some broad that gets murdered by a forswarn in the market square. Some dude gives you a note to meet him, and sends you on a quest to figure out the forsworn conspiracy. I follow the whole thing, interview people, unravel this whole plot, and am told to return to the dude at the temple.
I get there ... and he's dead. Nada. Two guards standing nearby do nothing. Typical talk about sweetrolls and arrows to the knee. The quest is left hanging at Return to Whatsisbutt.
I looked it up, and there's some guards that are supposed to jump me in the shrine and start the next phase of the quest. But it doesn't happen.
So instead, I dropped 30,000+ on a SWEET FUCKING MANSION in Solitude. I wanted a place with an alchemy table AND an enchanting table. This house is badass.
also, im wondering if this thread has made anyone want to buy the game hahaha
I didn't even know what Elder scrolls was before this thread. Now I'm sitting home on a Friday night missing Eyehategod cause I've been playing for six hours. Skyrim rules!

Every time I'm ready to pick a side, someone tells me something new that makes me change my mind.
My honest opinion so far is that the Stormcloaks have the worthy cause, but Ulfric himself is a conniving cocksucker. Sound about right?
Also, I just read a warning: If you join the rebellion and storm cities, overthrow jarls, etc... the game can bug out and leave you unable to purchase the houses in those cities. So buy your houses BEFORE you join the rebellion/empire.

ulfric is an asshole, but he grows to respect you after youve done some quests. when given the choice, I will almost always choose the side of the rebellious underdogs in a war as opposed to the wealthy, well-off imperials, with the one exception of course being star wars.

I google map'd where that chick lives in mexico and its only a few hours south of San Antonio where we'll be in a few days. Let's not turn that rape into a murder.

i did that this weekend. i haven't actually used the wabbajack yet..is it worth carrying around?
~100 hours on my char, level 45. i have about 50 unfinished quests in my log. i haven't explored ANY of the reach (southwest hold). the companions quest bugs are pretty annoying. i defected and played assassin's creed: the reverend last night.
I havent even SEEN Falkreath yet and/or touched a dark bro-hood quest.
Level 35 or 36 as of yesterday...
Wabbajack I finally sold the other day. I thought it was awesome cause it'll turn enemies into random things like rabbits and deer and shit but it turns out they just turn back into who the originally were a few seconds later it seems so its kinda pointless.
post by Large Negro Kitty at Dec 5,2011 11:15am
What is this wabbajack we all speak of?
I am almost indestructible. I rarely die. I one hit most anything. BUT THIS STUPID DRAGON IN RIVERWOOD HAS BEEN RAPING ME FOR A WEEK!!!!
What the FUCK? I kill elder dragons all the time, but for some reason every time I go to riverwood there's a dragon there who refuses to land, uses buildings for cover, and just royally kicks my ass.
And my favorite vendor is there.

About fucking time I got the fire-breathing shout. Now I feel like a proper dragonborne.
post by blessed offal nli at Dec 5,2011 11:45am
havn't played in two days. withdrawals are getting worse. gonna get blazed as fuck and play with the shades down all day today.
also, ark, the reach is probably the coolest part of the whole map, IMO. although I havnt been to every part of the map yet, and I just got to markarth. just been doing Stormcloak quests.
post by Large Negro Kitty at Dec 5,2011 11:53am
If you're in Markarth, go straight from the gate to the second door on your right. It's the "abandoned house". You'll find a mage asking you to help him explore the "haunted house". AWESOME haunted house quest, and you get a free giant house with a satanic altar in the basement.
i only have the one house still...dont see any need to get another...my house is FILLED with enchanted weapons I pretend I'm going to go back and use but never do.
Some houses have weapon racks and hangers, display cases, mannequins, etc... where you can hang all that cool shit up.
However there's a bug - if you go IN the house before you buy the upgrades, none of the weapon racks and shit works.
I bought the house in Solitude because I was tired of doing everything in Whiterun, but having to fast travel to do enchants. However the Solitude house has the enchant table, but there's no nearby lockers or chests to keep materials in. And the blacksmith is clear on the other side of Solitude.
no but there are a set of dragon bones outside of the college at winterhold from a dragon i killed that just like blows around in the wind like a fucking windsock and it never goes away....I can walk right through it.
post by Large Negro Kitty at Dec 5,2011 12:27pm
Andrew, have you gotten a patch yet? That's a bug. The patch should fix it. I got a patch on PS3 that made all my dragon corpses go away.

I think I have like 5 houses now.
yea that quest was cool. I got some mediocre mace out of it.
if the patch is only going to fix that fluttering dragon in winterhold, I dont need it. Aside from that my game isn't really buggy.
It's froze TWICE the whole time I've been playing and aside from small bugs you'd expect from a game of this magnitude, nothing I feel like I need a "patch" for...
yeah, as soon as I encounter a bug like a missing key or a door not opening when it should etc...I restart the xbox and revert to the most recent save. It has fixed it both times that happened to me.
I was tired of doing everything in Whiterun, but having to fast travel to do enchants.
In whiterun you can do enchants at Dragonsreach.
What I want is a forge, grindstone, an enchanter, and a place to store my shit all real close to each other. When I'm crafting and enchanting I'm usually over-encumbered with ingots. Can't be running to dragonsreach.
haha Never tried honestly. Everytime I've become overencumbered, I've been in a dungeon and can't fast travel anyways.
post by Large Negro Kitty at Dec 5,2011 1:20pm
^ ding. Can't fast travel overencumbered. Right now it's go in house LOAD get mats, leave house LOAD, go craft, sharpen, go into house LOAD, drop mats, leave house LOAD, fast travel to enchant LOAD, etc...
I don't want to have to go through so much effort. I'd kill for a basement with a forge and enchant table.

i understand bethesda's ideas for limiting the amount you carry...i still spent WAY TOO MUCH time fumbling around in the inventory. maybe if i wasn't so anal about what i carry. i should give less fucks. it turns out the game gives you more than enough to not worry about dropping something.
the best inventory was fallout: new vegas. ammo had weight and you also needed to carry food and water to survive. SUPPORT
yea I have a hard time getting rid of things, even though I know I don't need them, and can't sell them anyway cuz the fucking merchants only have like 500 bucks on them.
yeah it was kinda fun using that little meter thing to win people over...
LNK: how can you not just RUN OUT OF TOWN to escape that dragon?
post by Large Negro Kitty at Dec 5,2011 2:08pm
It won't follow me. It camps out on the arch leading into town. I don't know if it's a bug or on purpose. If I run, it starts killing townsfolk. If I stay, it kicks my ass.
I'm going to craft a set of fire resist armor and go back to kick this fuckers ass. I just got a higher level mage companion. Hopefully I'll have more ranged attack.

They have dumbed down a lot of things that I find kind of annoying.
The ES games have always been like that. I actually think this is a step up from Oblivion, at least in terms of skills and levelling up. The creature levels feel better this time around as well, but the leveled loot still feels meh.

So my smithing is finally maxed out at 100. It makes a HUGE difference when you upgrade weapons and armor. Andrew, my nightengale armor is maxed out and nearly doubled in strength and value

Everyone does smithing to 100. Its so over powered and breaks the game imo. I have a lot more challenging, fun and surprise moments upping my lockpicking and theifing skills to find rare random items. It also is keeping my guy in character (he is a rogue) rogues dont use a black smith they fucking rob and get treasure.
post by Spaldino at Dec 7,2011 1:31am
used http://www.ntcore.com/exsuite.php to patch up the tesv.exe and i havent had a crash yet. in full screen mode too! just downed a dragon and am becoming a ridiculous archer/marksman/assassin/rogue/nigger furfag.
I restarted because being a pure mage is massively overpowered even on Expert. Now trying a thief using only a bow and dagger and the game feels much more balanced. Probably won't last (the sneak 100 skill looks like a gamebreaker) but in the meantime, pickpocketing is hilarious.
Does anyone know what the hell I'm spose to do with Hjaltis Sword? It weak, weighs alot, and undroppable because it's a quest item, but I have no quest for it.
LOL did the lord of the rings reference just go over your head, Mr. Frodo?
oh wow, yes haha
also, I was just kinda weed-smokingly wandering around on my horse for like twenty minutes through the country side and I noticed a random pair of boots just floating in the air for no reason.
not yet, i just found the dwarven ruins in the glacier.
That's the one..

has anyone else done that quest at Rannveig's Fast where that faggot wizard sets you up to get trapped?
so I fall into his trap and he starts his monologue that I dont give a fuck about... i immediately pick the lock to the cage and crouch to sneak. the moment i step foot outside of the cage i'm hidden and he is all like "is someone there?" and i fucking slit his throat. it was brutal.
I'm only at Level 30. Have yet to see one of these elusive elder dragons, guessing they'll appear once I get higher in level. I don't get to play nearly as much as I'd like to be able to play. Thieves Guild storyline was awesome. Dark Brotherhood storyline was awesome. Got the skeleton key, I'm supposed to return it to Nocturnal's temple but fuck that obviously.
Aril, did you also get your nightingale armor from the the thieves' guild quest?
Yes, and I upgraded it to Legendary with Void Salts.
I have void salts a-plenty at my house in riften but lack the smithing wherewithal to upgrade the armor. I've focused my perks on sneak, archery and two-handed thus far.
Nope, I think the entrance is for a quest. But you open up numerous shafts that go down to it. It's a huge underground world. obviously they made it to look trippy: mushrooms and black light effects. Also, floaties, which I see while tripping sometimes
I've focused my perks on sneak, archery and two-handed thus far.
I have a 2 hand sneaking archer - I call her LYDIA.
Smithing makes money obsolete. I have almost 200,000G and NOTHING worth spending it on. I make the baddest armor myself. Got the dual enchanting perk, so I'm gonna start building an uuuuber suit of daedric armor and add a second enchant to each of my swords, bringing each sword up to around 120 damage.
Oh, I started up the main quest again. DRAGONREND makes dragon battles easy. Even 2 on one fights. Stunlocking two dragons at a time FTW.

Blackreach/Blackrock? That's part of the main quest. You're getting ahead of yourself. If you get a Elder Scroll while you're down there, DON'T LOSE IT.
That place is wicked trippy. So far it's the longest dungeon in the game. It's like a dungeon in a dungeon in a dungeon. I like that they give you a way out to the surface at the halfway point so you can lighten your inventory.
I have a 2 hand sneaking archer - I call her LYDIA.
Lydia is dead. Long live Lydia.
I got a new housecarl in Riften anyway. Her name is Iona and she's just as badass.
I just love sniping dudes from some high point while people are all scrambling around the fort. "I swear I heard something." BOOM, dead.

I can't aim arrows. That's why I have Onmurund or something as a companion. Level 40 mage beats my level 15 Lydia or whatever she is.
I didn't buy the house in alston yet. Too many thieves around. I have houses in Mage city, Markarth (dwarf city haunted house), Solitude, Whiterun, and I'm pretty sure I bought another when I was stoned and tired. Just forget where...
What's the deal with the house in Alston? Is that a back porch I see?
I wish I found THE STEED sign far earlier in the game.
Like buying a horse, or something different? I'm on my second or third horse. Cool fact - if you fall off a cliff the horse will absorb most of the impact. ;)
What's the deal with the house in Alston? Is that a back porch I see?
Enchanting table and alchemy lab in the basement. Garden outside that regrows every 30 days. The porch is pretty sweet. Don't have to worry about thieves when you're the leader of the thieves guild.
Cool fact - if you fall off a cliff the horse will absorb most of the impact. ;)
Haha I found this out by accident yesterday. Had to steal a horse for some dude who was in jail and wasn't paying attention. Had to restart or fail the quest.
BTW - Anyone else have shadowmere? Does that horse not fucking die ever? I did this quest that resulted in all of the city guards attacking me, I ran outside the gate while Shadowmere tanked for me and I picked them all off with arrows.
I wish I found THE STEED sign far earlier in the game.

I havnt bought a horse, but every time I fast travel, theres just a random horse there for me. I don't know if its a glitch, but it makes buying a horse obsolete.

It's one of those constellation stones that give you buffs. The Steed one lets you carry more and makes heavy armor quiet. It's WAAAAY over on the northwest coast.

anyone notice how broken using 2 handed weapons really is? especially if you spec into it. everything dies in 1 hit unless its a "boss" and then it dies in 2 hits. level through 10 so far with a redguard broad i made just to see how broken 2 handers are... its a cakewalk.
yea they do. they say things like "staying out of trouble kinsmen?" and "it's good to see a fellow nord" and you get better prices. being a darkie elf is basically being a black guy in a chinese guys convenient store.
here is my impression of me playing the game: finds giants/mammoths dies.. overf and over and over again.
Any player with two brain cells would know to avoid giants until you're at least a lvl 30. Go to Whiterun and Riverwood, fool. I can picture you only playing this game for an hour then putting it next to Vagrant story to collect dust because you like games like Little Fag World on ipad and not real men games.

not on master difficulty, i have 100 2 handed, i do a good amount damage against most humans but any vampires or a troll clan i have a hard time with. i'm level 47, the balance is about where i would expect it when i fight groups or fight bosses.

Yeah I haven't loaded up the game yet since I got back from Texas. I have although been reading Dance with Dragons finally by George RR Martin. The plane ride forced me to get into it again and I'm hooked.
nothing to buy, and a lot of the quests are bugging. I got bored.
yup. i'm at level 47 with probably 90-100 hours of actual playing time. i'm still gonna keep going back to it, but this always happens with elder scrolls, when the map is full, you've beaten it. half the quests are bugged, and you never could get yourself to climax. just long, gorgeous, painful sex.
I'm like lvl 32 with maybe 70 hours and I have it on master and it still seems too easy at alot of parts. Even the difficult parts only take me 3 tries max. Havnt experienced any glitches other than with graphics. I'm not bored with it but I havn't been able to find much time for it, every time I sit down to RIM I find my attention turns to something else. ADD I guess.
I encountered my first major glitch. I'm doing the quest where you have to get Mehrune's Razor's pieces, and on the third piece I'm out near Markarth at some redoubt and EVERY time I get to the forsworn leader it gets super choppy and I can't attack. It just starts getting almost blurry, and I die. I tried a million fucking times. FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUU
I tried coming at it from a different direction and it's fine. It might have had something to do with the rocks they dropped on me, because when I went around from the side that was the only thing that was different and I killed that bitch faster than hearing Blood on the Dance Floor killed my will to live.

I have a real hard time laying down on the couch while playing PC games. It's too bad, because I otherwise LOVE playing faster and better looking versions of games on a monitor 1/4 the size of my home theater screen.
And while being forced to play on this inferior gigantic screen and amazing sound system I miss terribly the benefits of playing PC games online where I can compare stats, trophies, and play with my other gaming friends. All four of them who actually have the PC version.
Luckily, I am consoled by the 972,000 other friends I have who own the PS3 versions.
But you are correct, PC is better in every way. Except a few. And some others.
I'm going to gamestop tomorrow, should I buy the ps3 or 360 version?
360. I heard the ps3 has some lag issues. Not sure if it's been patched though.
post by Spaldino at Dec 26,2011 10:56pm
the PC version, if you aren't from the midwest and retarded, is better. your computer can be hooked up to your huge tv as well as your sound system. you can also play with a wireless xbox360 or ps3 controller so you can lay down and play all you want. you also can have a wireless keyboard and mouse if you prefer to play an FPS-like "properly". not to mention that the PC version has MODS that have an infinite amount of potential replay value. the game is going to continue to grow and evolve on the PC (look at Morrowind).
also if you want to be a faggot and complain about the price of a PC that can play this game in ultra (about any PC thats $900+ new now), you can just pirate games to save money. if you also want to further justify that point... lets say you buy a 60 dollar new game every other month... thats 360 bucks. (most gamers pick up far more than just 6 games a year but this is an example.) take the price of the system new, 300 bucks (dont you dare mention the xbox arcade or the cheaper ps3)... thats 660 bucks. PC is only like 400 more. take into account that this is also your computer... so thats another 400 bucks or so for a basic regular computer and it equals out pretty much.

Argument comes up all the time.
I stopped caring about consoles when they ceased being consoles and started being wannabe computers.
And yea, I had a shitty computer up until last year. Now I have a bargain computer from BJ's that I upgraded with a new power supply and video card for under 200 bucks. The total cost of the system was under 600. I just beat COD MW3 on high settings and everything looked superb.
I don't own an HDTV because I don't watch much TV or care to. You guys all complaining about PC costs spend more money on an HDTV, sound system, and a couch.. NO MAKEY SENSE
I've made incremental upgrades for years, the price equals that of getting a new console every 5 years and the benefits are unquestionable. I use a 37" monitor, your argument is invalid.
I've made incremental upgrades for years, the price equals that of getting a new console every 5 years and the benefits are unquestionable. I use a 37" monitor, your argument is invalid.
My last gaming rig = $1400. (2005?) Add in about 5 years of upgrades, replacement parts, etc... + monitor, PSU, $100 Razer mouse, etc... = LOTS OF MONEY.
Did I miss anything? Curious how your math just doesn't add up.
PC games are superior - GRAPHICALLY. That is all. Development dollars are less. Release dates are later. The fanbase/#of people you know playing one is smaller. Coding is often identical, especially when you buy one of those awesome games that could be 1000 times better on PC, only to find the PC release is nothing but a shitty CONSOLE PORT anyway.
So yeah, other than being able to run huge textures and mods for skyrim (which we're all enjoying mod-free right now anyway)name ONE OTHER GAME in the last year that is worth the purchase on PC vs. console.
I'll give you a hint: Betamax was better than VHS back in the day. It still failed because POPULARITY and COMPATIBILITY go a lot further than TECHNICAL SUPERIORITY.
PC might be a great platform, but until developers and gamers catch onto that, it's still the dead medium it has been for several years now. Just ask the revolving staff of editors and writers at PC Gamer magazine struggling to hold their jobs.

Funny thing is, all you fags that play FPS games on consoles would get owned by PC Gamers. Face the facts, PC Gamers are better at games and are more involved. Console gaming/gamers are just PC Gaming lite and are trendy hipsters, which is why the market shifted.
What it comes down to for me is that pretty much the only game I play is Skyrim, so I'm not gonna spend $700+ on a computer for one game, or $100 and tons of time upgrading, or however the fuck you nerds want to spell it out. Obviously PC is better, but it's still a hell of a fucking game on any system, and LOL at people using video games as a catalyst for elitism. You people are just awful.
Oh and I do agree that playing FPS on anything but PC is for mouth breathing morons like that hideous idiot on the rttp home page.

I figure, if you already have a computer that can handle photoshop (which I KNOW you didn't pay for), you can put down for a decent graphics card like aril did and play Skyrim: Generations on settings that feel/look better than any console.
post by Your Average Console Gamer at Dec 27,2011 1:08pm
You figured wrong bitch. My dick is bigger because I play console games.
Anon is basically that rich guy who buys a $70,000 Porsche to make up for the fact that his trophy wife is fucking the pool boy because she can't stand the sight of his awful body naked. But at least his car goes fast amirite!
LNK, 1400 is retarded. Myself or ark could build you a computer with 500 plus spare parts you already have laying around.
In 2005, it was pretty average for a gaming rig. 2X8800GT alone was close to half the cost.
Of course one could be built cheaper now, but who cares? I got tired of shitty ports and half assed developers anyway.
But Aril is right in one regard - if you're playing FPS you SHOULD prefer a PC. However, it's sad that fag needs to resort to the FPS defense in an RPG thread.
How is it that the people who claim to be such fans of RPG's do not understand this concept? A tank is any character that will cause the NPC's to attack them instead of you, leaving you free to attack the NPC unharmed. Usually it's a character that is capable of taking a lot of damage.

1) not knowing what a tank is has nothing to do with knowing what a tank is. It's an rttp joke, hard to explain
2) action rpgs arent real rpgs
3) The Dog is pointless and has a horrible accent
I learned about tanks from this thread haha. Some thousands of replies ago. His random Boston accent I thought provided a little comic relief and I brought him with me on a ton of quests before actually returning him to Clavicus. He was a great tank and I chose NOT to kill him. I may be all about the Dark Brotherhood but I only kill for hire or when attacked.
I think imma gonna play again today and just rush the remaining bits of the main quest.
One question before I do for anyone that has finished:
Do I still get to kill dragons after the quest ends, or at least have a way to get more dragon bones?
Dragons still pop up randomly after the main quest. I finished the main quest a couple of weeks ago and still run into at least one dragon every couple of hours. I finally smithed Dragon Armor today.
By the twin moons, I just stumbled upon Blackmarsh...

I started playing this Friday, lvl 13, just returned the horn to the greybeards. My character has a heavy armor, archery, one handed, destruction, and speech focus.
Any recommendations on how to boost my magica besides leveling up?

For magika boosting, max out your enchanting skill and get the dual effect unlock. Get an enchanter's philter that increases enchantment powers by 20% for 60 seconds, then quickly enchant whatever armor/bling with Fortify Magika and Magika Regeneration. Having the blessing of certain mage stones probably helps with your magika amount too.
I'm def towards the end of the main quest (trap the dragon in Dragonsreach) but I'm gonna put it off and continue on some other side quests.
Finished the Dark Bro Hoods...decorated the shit out of the new hideout.
I've noticed that if i buy or steal a horse, it'll stick around for a while and just appear out of no where when I fast travel (OMG POSER!!) but eventually it'll go away BUT, when I got Shadowmere, that motherfucker has been with me forever...ALWAYS shows up wherever I go.
I've yet to encounter a werewolf and/or any situation where I could see getting married ever happening...
also, I hate the dwarven caves...fuck off robot spiders.

2 things that caused me to stop playing skyrim:
a bunch of stupid quest bugs on my level 48 char.
starting a new character that's not a nord = people still call you a nord. completely ruins the game for me.
i love this game but i'm waiting for mods to address some issues before i jump back in.
I'm done for now, will step foot in Tamriel every so often until I start a new game. Usually happens within 6 months.
I'm too busy doing reality simulations with my upgraded M4A1 and owning people in MW3. fuck these new games, though. I'ma start a new Shining Force II game.
I'm a dark elf but no one's called me a nord in my memory. Also, everyone loves me.
My next character is going to be a destruction/melee Khajit, and will probably start up when major conversion mods are out. Angry big titted cat with a wig ftw
Alright, I tried it, and now I'm hooked. I can't believe I made fun of this game. It's tits. Fuck.
post by frankovhell at Jan 3,2012 11:41pm
Ive played as a Khajit the whole time and all i ever here is "You'll make a fine rug cat!" (dats racist) No one calls me a nord. Sounds like you got a weird buggy version.
I'm still not doing the main quest whatsoever. I haven't gotten any time to really sit down and play for long stretches though so Im still only level 36.
I'm a little bored since I finished the main quest... but I think I'm going to do some side quests and level up so that I can kill all the giants and their mammoths. fuck those guys. I also want to see how far north I can go.
I'm a little bored since I finished the main quest..
Give me a break. why dont you-
-do the dark brotherhood quests
-do the thieves guild quests
-do the mage college quests
-do the stormcloak quests
-do the imperial quests
-do the companion quests
-travel to every city in the game
-do all missions in each city
-various other things
The main quest was shorter than some mission strings. I find it utterly absurd that all you care about is the main quest when there's 150+ other quests in an open environment with limitless opportunity to expand your character.
You don't play RPGs. Return Skyrim now and go back to playing Little Big World for ipad, Milkdrinker.
In Oblivion/Morrowind I was constantly thieving for goods to sell so I could survive... in Skyrim I'm a baller. I have more money than I know what to do with and COUNTLESS items I could sell but dont need to.

i'll give it another shot, after the opening quest i literally ran straight to winterhold and the instant someone called me a nord i said FUCK THIS GAME and did something constructive. maybe with a newer character playing on a patched game i can avoid all the other bugs i had. i never had any performance issues, just quest bugs.
you know what i mean, i'm exaggerating, after hitting level 50 with one char and all the bugs i had, at that point i just said "meh". it kills the immersion when i'm a breton chick and someone says something like "oh, a nord at the college, what a rarity"
all this skyrim talk is probably going to cause me to fire up the game again tonight and see what new mods i can install.
I take large breaks from games like that then go back to them. They're meant to be played overtime. besides, I hated how every free second I had was either going to Skyrim or watching Arnold movies.
post by ark at Jan 10,2012 4:20pm
taking breaks is key. if i play a game every night for a week, i start to loathe it.
havn't played in 2 weeks. been playing TFC and dawn of war. will pick up again soon. got really buggy.

CRT is a much better technology than LCD.
1) Perfect black levels
2) Flawless off-axis viewing
3) Much faster refresh rate than LCD
4) Warmer, more natural image (thanks to scan lines and small granules)
5) Far longer life-span
6) Not subject to manufacture problems such as dead-pixels
7) Good range of compatibility with lower or non-standard resolutions without blurring
Given ultimate space and money the world's best CRT could easily crush the world's best LCD. So tell me /g/, why do you like your inferior screens that companies such as Samsung have brainwashed you to think is better than what already existed? The only cost-savings are on their end.
And the funny thing is you guys keep buying this crappy LCD technology and giving away your free CRTs on Craigslist. A fool and his dollar are soon parted I guess.
And before you start yapping about IPS panels:
Enjoy your slow G2G response to switch pixels already, not to mention that hidden input and scalar lag. Luckily, CRT has no such bullshit.
The only semi-legitimate point I've heard against CRTs regards weight, but you don't bitch about the weight of a prospective couch while furniture shopping, do you? Didn't think so.
The tv I game with in my basement is a massive 30" widescreen HD tube tv. I bought it around 2003 and it weighs a ton. I'd gladly trade it for a bigger LCD I could hang on the wall.
At D.I.C.E. 2012, Bethesda Game Studios' Todd Howard just showed an amazing highlight reel of mods the studio built into The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim during a week-long "game jam" after the game's release. Features like mounted combat, a lycanthropy skill tree, and one enormous mudcrab, the width of the horizon, were all shown. And that was the tip of the iceberg.
Howard made no promises that anything seen in the demo reel would ever make it into the game, whether as a title update or downloadable content down the line. But it did showcase the depth of what the Bethesda team built and a creative instinct within the team that matches the mod community's enthusiasm, stoked recently by the release of the official Creation Kit.
Some highlights, by no means an exhaustive list:
• Seasonal foliage.
• Spears.
• Kill cams for magic and ranged combat.
• Stealth enhancements such as water arrows.
• Paralysis runes.
• New follower commands for combat style and training.
• Building your own home..
• Goblins.
• Waygate fast travel.
• Mounted combat.
• Dragon mounts.
• Kinect-enabled shouts.
• Enhanced underwater visuals.
• Ice and fire arrows.
• A Werebear.
• Lycanthropy skill tree.
• Becoming a flying vampire, with minions..
• An enormous mud crab.
• "Fat giants."
3.1GB high resolution texture pack was released yesterday on steam. PC version now looks 10x better, no longer looks like an xbox port. Tons of mods are out too, just click to install them.
The only semi-legitimate point I've heard against CRTs regards weight, but you don't bitch about the weight of a prospective couch while furniture shopping, do you? Didn't think so.
too bad you don't have a PC bro, i dove back in for a couple hours the other night and tried a bunch of new mods, there's graphics mods, "deadly dragons" mod, "WARS IN SKYRIM" mod which has large scale battles between all factions (bandits vs. orcs, imperial vs. stormcloaks, etc), new NPCs, spells, equipment, etc
(granted i never finished most of the main quest lines on my 49 warrior or 20 mage/thief, so i still have a bunch of excuses for coming back)
Glitch in my skyrim. Turned into full vampire...tried to go and get the cure but the thing is not in the coffin like in all the youtube videos and as the storyline says it should be in that coffin, it just isn't.
I've been playing heavily modded skyrim with graphical enb mods and everything lately. Not buying Diablo 3 is fine with me. I'm finally doing all the quests and some of the mods people have made are amazing.
Yeah, PC. Dunno if my game updates have any effect on you consolers.
post by ark at Aug 31,2012 11:13am
been playing off and on with a few excellent mods, when the game is stable it's fantastic, i still haven't done a majority of the stuff the game offers.
I actually bought the PC version the other day because I sold my xbox copy. Haven't even installed it yet because I'm still playing Dead Space 2. I played Skyrim for like 120+ hours but never got anywhere in it, because 90% of the time I was just baked roaming around looking at stuff instead of doing quests.
Than you haven't even come close to doing everything in the game. You never even met the clan of werewolves? Those are just regular quests in the game.
It's in my nature to be melodic, I was born from Judaism
I got kicked out of hebrew school, lol

i'm a bunch of texture and graphics mods, caliente's nude mod, dynamic guards, weather mods, sound effect and soundtrack addons, dance of death killmove+, sky ui, alternate start, midas magic and a few others. my first playthrough i didn't even touch most of the entire west side of the map and now that save file is broken anyway. starting a new game with alternate start mod is a pretty rad.
Also, no fast travel mod is stupid. If you don't like fast traveling, you can just NOT DO IT, you don't need a mod. Also, I would never play this game without the ability to travel. Tedium does not add to challenge or gameplay at all.
post by ark at Sep 1,2012 10:53am
it's part of a hardcore survival mod where you need to worry about food, hypothermia, rest, etc...it's pretty sweet, forces you to play the game differently. like hardcore mode in fallout new vegas
so it turns out I cant do any of the companions quests because of a bug in the Trouble In Skyrim mission...the dude says to kill the leader of dead crone rock but i already killed her...
"While doing jobs for the Companions I am to "Kill the Leader of the Dead Crone Rock". So I head up there and low and behold the leader is already dead laying on the ground and the arrow is pointing over the hags head. I smash, burn, freeze and try to re-animate the corpse with scrolls and spells to no luck. Now I am unable to continue with the Companion quests.
Is there a central place to record all of these so that they can fix these? And forgive me if this is already on this forum. Doing this quickly so I can get back downstairs to continue with other quests."
post by ark at Sep 5,2012 6:27pm
that blows, i don't think there's any way around that in the xbox version
Yeah there's really no use for the menu when you're in vamp form though. Werewolf is third person too. I've yet to earn many perks yet as a vamp all in all, I'd say it's way better than being a faggy vampire slayer. The storyline is pretty sweet too.
I'm gonna go back and replay the whole game with a completely different style character...i guess the werewolf play is greatly improved with the dawnguard add-on so I'm psyched to finally be able to do those quests.
Bahahaha. After a few quests together, i asked her about why she always talks about being lonely. She ended up asking if i had family or anyone. An option was, "there's my wife..." i chose "i try not to rely on anyone. Serana a is way more badass than my faggot alchemist wife.
Also, apparently Hearthfire came out a couple days ago on xbox live. I'm thinking about getting it. You buy a plot of land, design a house and gather the materials you need to build it. Looks boss. I'll finally have some use for all the gold I've collected and won't be limited to the houses offered in the game.
Not sure you can do that. Even if you can, why the fuck would you marry her if you just want her to be your follower? Marriage isn't about love, you dolt. It's about having her run a store so you can get free gold and pawn your shit off on her.
you get married in Sid Meyers Pirates on xbox....fuck off ballroom dancing for 20 mins in a video game.
I remember watching matti play fable 2 or 3 or something. Wasnt into it at all and then he had to not only get a wife but like, spend time with her and I was like WTF FUCK THIS GAME.
not gay in a homosexual way, just gay. Like if there were two guys suckin each others dicks I wouldnt call them fags, but if one of em started saying something gay like 'people from phoenix are phoenician' Id say stop being a faggot and suck that dick.
Hearthfire sounds like the dumbest shit ever. I don't want to decorate my house and adopt a kid like a fruit. I want to slay mutha fuckas with my bow. Need more dlc quests.
Meh to each their own. Soul Cairn was fucking awesome. The imagery alone was enough and I thought the story was great too. I didn't do the actual dawnguard side though. I imagine it was similar to the vampire questline.

I played this a bit last night. I've never touched most of the stuff in game but with survival mods I'm still loving it. Getting from one farmstead to another takes hours.
I should probably read through this whole thread. Last time, I was like at level 21 or something like that when I completed the main quest. On the switch, I'm re-learning everything.
