This happened with me for someone on AT&T. I found their phone and they told me the same exact thing and I did the same exact thing. Well, I mean, I intend to throw it out, it's sitting right here. No way am I going to go find an AT&T store (They said no licensed places, either, only a straight AT&T store) to be the good guy, I'm too fucking busy.
They're not allowed to disclose any personal information thus the reasoning for returning it to the store. There's huge fines, broken laws, and shit for giving out someone else's information.

Also Steve: I asked them to contact the person, not for them to give me their information. I said for them to give the person my info so they can pick up their phone. No dice.
