There's always been a lot of jokes about sexual abuse / assault, and definitely been bullshit that floats around on the internet about rape left and right.

I understand that something so serious and misunderstood creates good fodder for humor in that the tension is already there, a tension that is almost overwhelming. Nevertheless, lately I have been seeing that rape, incest, molestation, etc has really become this thing that when it actually hurts someone, doesn't get the right kind of attention to help people it actually affects. It's dealt with through memes, spoofs, or on the flipside, rumors, conjecture, and underhanded social maliciousness.

All jokes and bullshit rumors aside, I have always felt very strongly about the issues of sexual assault and abuse, have had a number of male and female friends that have experienced this, and, really in line with what xMikex was saying about the garbage that surrounded last night's show, maybe this is a great time to contribute to a positive difference.

It's an awkward discussion, and I'm not asking everyone to jump on board, but I figured I'd post some links for anyone that has been a victim of sexual abuse, knows someone who has, or is just plain curious about these issues. You don't need to respond, just click through, learn more, you can retain your privacy and anonymity.

It's a shame that the best we can get of this type of conversation, at times, is backbiting scene politics and vaguely illegal child pornography. I'm not condemning anyone, merely stating that if we're going to have a swamp of misinformation and satire, we should represent the stuff that can help, too.

If anyone else knows some good resources, especially around New England, feel free to append them.

Also, this is a growing organization that a good friend of mine has been working with. I strongly suggest checking them out. Even if you don't need their services, donating even a few dollars to them. They provide legal counseling to both men and women.

For intense anonymity, and since Long distance is included in most cell plans, one could try calling this 24 hr line in Michigan.

We could go a step further and start a discussion about why humor based around contentious topics such as rape, sexuality, gender, and race is disseminated, or for that matter, even considered funny. How is it that extremely awkward topics make people laugh? Is the laugh response real or an attempt to fit in? Is the rampant misogyny and racism associated with metal only a product of the notion that being vulgar is actually hilarious? What ever happened to humor that is actually funny? Why do people lie to themselves and laugh at this sort of garbage? Why does the "scene" promote such antisocial ideas (which in extreme cases leads to actual violence)? Any takers? Or am I just going to get railed on for not being metal enough because I have a conscience?

i just have a high tolerance for things deemed offensive by the average person. i don't take offense at too many things, unless it's a personal attack. over the years, i've grown to learn that being offended is a choice. i'm not going to let jokes or pictures offend me. in most cases, i find them funny.

I'm not complaining: People are going to do whatever they want to do.

I'm saying that if we're going to joke and say all this stuff, somewhere, underneath, we have to support the reality and make it clear that as much as we're foolin' around, that harming someone sexually is in reality no joke, that there is help out there, without judgement.

toggletoggle post by hauptpflucker   at Jun 3,2010 2:41pm
It's not so much the offensive nature that concerns me, but I do struggle to grasp what it is that makes these topics funny. Also when you start making real people the butt of these jokes I personally find it crosses a line. Just because it doesn't effect you doesn't mean that as a social being it should be tolerated, or that you shouldn't empathize with the person being attacked,

I wish more than anything the penalty for rape was an eye for an eye, and that I could be paid to don a strap-on/broken bottle/splintered baseball bat and deal out the punishment.

I appreciate these sentiments as well. Being a white man myself it's easy to think that these jokes aren't harmful, however I've met plenty of people not "fortunate" enough to be born white or male who do find them offensive. That seems like a reasonable reason to call even the jokes into question.

I don't see how monetary compensation would come into play here. But surely if that was the penalty people might think twice... Then again killing people for committing a crime doesn't seem to work as a deterrent either...

Regarding racist jokes, they are doled out quite generously and essentially come full circle a la black and hispanic comedians. I do, however, see your point in a general, non-stand-up-comedy sense.

toggletoggle post by hauptpflucker   at Jun 3,2010 2:48pm
Oh yeah, I mean. I think if white people can't make racist jokes non white people shouldn't either. I do find the societal acceptance of anti white humor equally unsettling.

It's funny you should say that, cause what really brought this to the forefront of my mind was last week a coworker was telling me about a Dave Chappele skit about "man rape" he saw. I wasn't offended, I just realized that I'd heard about a hundred rape jokes in the past few weeks and started thinking about friends of mine, people I care about, who have been assaulted and how they must feel hearing all of the bullshit going on these days with misinformation, ridicule, etc etc

Black comedian, though male, still same outcome.

toggletoggle post by hauptpflucker   at Jun 3,2010 2:53pm
absolutely, if we're going to condone vulgar humor then we need to simultaneously support victims of vulgar/violent crimes. Arguably there should be more support for actual victims than for the humor itself.

I'm a guy who's usually down for all sorts of jokes but rape/molestation jokes just aren't something I can get into personally. I start thinking more and more every day that the people who are most into joking about things like this are the people who go out into the world the least, where they can retreat into their own lives and actually come to the conclusion that rape and racism and what not never happen because they never see it. I try to laugh whatever I can off but it's getting a lot harder for me lately.

PS: I loled at the Abraham Lincoln picture and as far as the Rapist Glasses video goes, making fun of the rapists is something that will never get old. It's just when you start making fun of the victims that I can't find it funny.

I have to disagree here. If someone is willing to rape, they're all kinds of fucked-up and need to be removed from society permanently, preferably with a rope. Punishment isn't about revenge; it's about getting rid of the bad animals. Death is 100% certain.
