You read the title. We mostly play Tuesday nights in Hopedale, 7:30-midnightish depending on who's gotta work. Usually it's me running, lately with AD&D first edition rules; occasionally someone else will run a game or 3 in any number of different systems. We consume gallons of beer and scotch and ounces of the halfling's leaf and tell many a dick joke. It's pretty much zero commitment (by design, the guys are highly encouraged to return to town at the end of a session, so nobody has to drag along PCs with no players next time), so PM a nilla for directions and come out some Tuesday. Errrrr, hmmmmm, sorta. I mean, for the most part 1e rules are identical to 2e rules, the main changes are group-based initiative (rather than individual like in 2e) and a few extra classes and races in 1e. Some of the spell descriptions are a bit different (fireballs do d6 per level of the caster, with no cap - high-level magic-users are nasty). I do tend to use house rules from pretty much any place, and I have some 2e-era stuff I use (like adventures and setting stuff). Odds are if I'm running AD&D it'll be mostly 1e, but I know one of the other guys wants to run a 2e game at some point.

We also occasionally play HackMaster, which is pretty much 1e/2e hybrid with tons of extra combat crunch and brutality on top. REALLY nasty crit tables (which I just so happen to be using for the 1e game).

Also dragons and giants aren't nearly as nasty in 1e as they are in 2e. A first-level party can actually take on a very young white dragon and live if they're smart and lucky enough.

Can I use my characters from my youth days of playing? All mapped out pretty on graph paper in a manilla folder...

I'm interested but I have so little free time.

Yeah and no. I mean, it's 1e so there's barely checks for any actions outside of combat and thief skills, but I use simple ability checks for most shit. My goal is to get things moving quickly, but I'm no softy - I'm a right bastard sometimes, haha. Dice rolls are all on the table, and I don't fudge shit.



Cool, bro. There's not much to learn going from 3e to old-school, but it can be a bit of a culture shock. There aren't really skills per se (I am thinking about throwing in some kind of background-based secondary skill system), and the first couple of levels are brutal unless you're smart, lucky, and know when to run. Mostly it's just D&D, though. (Not sure the same can be said for this 4e shit.). Like I said, feel free to drop in and try it out - no worries if it's not the system for you, but you might be surprised.

Yeah, both of my characters are like lv11 and lv17, I think? I'd have to dig them up. They may still be at my parents house. Making a new, joke character may be more fun anyway...

Yeah, by default there's just magic-users and illusionists. I am actually experimenting with a 3rd-party supplement for alchemists, though. I can post links to PDFs (although there's not too much you need to learn beforehand - we pretty much roll PCs right at the table, doesn't take long in 1e).
