New site? Maybe some day.

In before epic AC/DC from the fjords. |
Already got this and im not that impressed. Nice big production sound however. Meh, its ok, I'll listen to it again. |
Big production and Immortal should have never been combined. I'll stick with the classics. |
Summary: a good rock album, a bad metal one.
This album is really good for what it is, but it's in a genre I don't really like. That is to say, it's no longer black metal; it's more like dark indie rock, maybe a little Nick Cave mixed in with your Sisters of Mercy with more punkish riffs.
The vocals are as raspy as ever, the tempo changes and transitions are still breakneck intense, and the melodic sense of an unfolding landscape is there, but in the small. It's both not bad and not good enough to be Immortal.

Basically, MikeOfDecrepitude nailed it. |

This hit it exactly. I still enjoy it but it's nothing special. |
I think it sounds pretty fucking awesome, but my favorite immortal is at the heart of winter, not the classic grim stuff.
these guys can just write break your neck riffs. |
I really like At The Heart of Winter.
Now, here is a kitten in a bucket
i was never the biggest immortal fan but the first three are good. i lost interest after blizzard beasts. |
i have such i boner for this band |
Call of the winter moooooooooon or GTFO |
WOWOWOWOW......IT'S.....DELICIOUS or GTFO |
Hordes of War is my favorite track; sweet Bathory worship. |
so after listening to this several times, i have to say overall i'm disappointed. it has all the right elements, the production is nice and organic, but it just feels empty. it seems like it was Immortal trying to be Immortal, as opposed to Immortal trying to write a killer album. there are some really cool parts, but as a whole it's lackluster. it sounds like they didn't put a whole lot of effort into writing solid songs. i love the production, but if i'm going to listen to it, i might as well listen to At the Heart of Winter or Damned in Black instead. the same elements, the same people, but those albums have substance, and achieve something. |
i was def diggin that Bal Sagoth album more... |
Didn't spend much time with this or the new Gorgoroth. Gave a once-through and heard no reason to revisit. |
