New site? Maybe some day.
I'm going out of town for awhile, which means I'll have enough time to sit on my ass and catch up on a few movies. So I'm looking for recommendations, since I'm not too much of a movie buff myself, and usually I just catch movies on HBO or whatever's on. Anything dark, interesting, provocative, possibly foreign or noir, music related, sci-fi, or documentaries. No horror though, not my thing these days. Thanks! |
If you havn't seen it, check out Dark City. Awsome sci-fi action movie about a city that just doesn't seem right and one dude who's trying to figure out whats up. It was recommended to me on Netflix so i just got it but didn't have high hopes. Turned out to be one of the better movies ive ever seen. |
See aaron_michael thread, I'm on a phone and too lazy to find it. |
Nice, that sounds awesome, I'll check it out. |
Big Trouble In Little China |
I should hope you've seen Blue Velvet |
do you like Napalm Death?
their dvd is one of the best things i own |
Cube (first one)
Dark/Sci-Fi/somewhat underground movie |
Shamefully, I've never seen Blue Velvet, but the plot looks interesting, I'll fire up Bittorrent and give it a whirl. Cube and The Holy Mountain look solid too, thanks. |
Blue Velvet is one of my favorites. I feel the same way about Frank Booth that my grandmother does about Jesus Christ.
The Holy Mountain you just have to see to believe and then you still won't believe what you just saw. Watch it on drugs for that extra special something. |
MONGOL.....
Fucking awesome. |
Saw Mongol in the theater and was pretty bummed on it. It was all about how much he loved his wife. Dude was a notorious womanizer warrior sodomite conqueror! Nigga please. Not nearly enough savagery. |
Memento
The Usual Suspects
The Prestige
Pan's Labyrinth |
The Orphanage. Semi-horror, but not gory or campy. More of a thriller/mystery. |
Pan's Labyrinth was a good movie. My only beef with it was that it stole an award away from Apocalypto. but, that doesn't matter too much.. |
Stole an award away from Apocalypto? Pan's Labyrinth is easily one of my favorite movies ever and is a great movie outside of my opinion too. But that's just my opinion. IT IS WHAT IT IS |
I'm not arguing - I loved the movie. I just don't think it deserved the award for best makeup/costumes or whatever that fucking award is. It was pretty much half CGI and half realtime props. Apocalypto's costumes were far superior IMO. But that's just my opinion. IT IS WHAT IT IS |
The only things that were CGI in Pan's Labyrinth were the toad, the fairies, and removal of the actor in Pan's suit's legs that stick out between the thighs and the feet. Everything else was very real and very meticulously done, as far as I know. |
I think there were a few more scenes with CGI. But then again, I'd have to watch it again. I just think Apocalypto (which I'd tell him to watch too) should have deserved it only because they went into extreme detail with Mayan dress. They even had jade in their teeth..
Apocalpyto was also a huge disappointment as well; the ending was just horribly executed, historically false, christian biased and completely ruined it for me. Other than that, I like the movie. |
Movies to see:
Ravenous
Perfume, the story of a murderer
The Good, the bad, and the ugly |
Yeah, the Holy Mountain rules, El topo too. |
everyone get there hands on this, you wont be disappointed. |
heh, thought of this first after reading "cube" |
^^^ response to 'gleaming the cube' |
Don't give me a jerk-off handjob! |
But for reals, I'd recommend Andrei Tarkovsky's Stalker if you're looking for THE BEST SCIENCE FICTION MOVIE EVER FUCKING MADE |
"remember when i took ya to Disney World?"
"yeah, i got kicked out for pissing on Donald Duck" |
