Deftones bassist Chi Cheng is reportedly in a coma following an automobile accident in Santa Clara, CA yesterday. Details are limited thus far, but Deftones frontman Chino Moreno has issued the following statement:

"It deeply saddens me to inform you all that our brother Chi Cheng was involved in a terrible car accident last night. He is currently in a Northern California Hospital in serious, but stable condition. I am on my way up North right now to be by his side along with the rest of our bandmates and family. Chi is one of the strongest people I know, and I'm praying that his strength will get him through this. Please say a prayer for him as well."

Fuck the haters, this is very bad news. I hope he stays stable and recovers because if the dude passes away I'm almost certain its the end for this band.

lame, when i lived in Texas some friends and i tried sneaking into one of their shows and while they were attempting to sneaking in i saw Chi in the atrium next to the venue and just told him it was one of my friends birthdays and asked if he could help us out he ended up giving me and her backstage passes.....coolest band dood i've gotten to meet.

this sucks. chi cheng is one of my first Bass influences.

i was quite into this band in high school, i still love adrenaline and around the fur. This is sad.

Whats even more sad is Stephen Carpenters stupid obsession with Meshuggah. All he ever talks about in the guitar mags is this said band.

Deftones bass player Chi Cheng has passed away at the age of 42. Cheng has been in a semi-comatose state since a 2008 car accident. The following statement was issued by Cheng's family via Oneloveforchi.com:

"This is the hardest thing to write to you. Your love and heart and devotion to Chi was unconditional and amazing. I know that you will always remember him as a giant of a man on stage with a heart for every one of you. He was taken to the emegency room and at 3 am today his heart just suddenly stopped. He left this world with me singing songs he liked in his ear.

"He fought the good fight.You stood by him sending love daily. He knew that he was very loved and never alone. I will write more later. I will be going through the oneloveforchi and any other information may not be reliable. If you have any stories or messages to share please send them to the onelove site. Please hold Mae and Ming and the siblings and especially Chi's son, Gabriel in your prayers. It is so hard to let go."
