New site? Maybe some day.
This game is an absolute masterpiece. I've probably played and beaten it 15 times since it came out in 1994. The music, characters, gameplay, depth, world... everything about it is awesome.
If you were too caught up in FF7 due to it becoming so popular, and you haven't played FF6, I highly suggest you play it, as it is best of the series IMO.
I've played through it 3 times and it rules. My favorite still remains 10. I love 7 and 6 but 10 put me in a place that neither did...though when Aeris dies is probably the most touching videogame moment ever. |
is that the one with the machines? or is that the one with the where you start out with the chocovo? |
You start off FF5 with a Chocobo near a meteor crash site and you start off FF6 on sweet ass-robots. |
yep ok i got confused, i did play a translated FFIII on a rom
FFVI is a good game. all the FF games are great
i haven't played a FF game since X though. |
XII is pretty good. HUGE HUGE HUGE game. |
I'm not a huge fan of any FFs past 9-- the last one for PS1.
Oh come on. You can put your FF elitism aside and enjoy the incredible game that X was. |
Don't know - I never owned a PS2 or 3 for that matter, but I've played X. Once the characters started to look like girls and the game was all petite-looking and whathaveyou, it was a turn off. I'm sure I'd appreciate it, but I'm such an old school gamer that I'd definitely prefer all the FFs prior to it.
I just love any game within the 8-16bit era. |
I do agree that secret to amazing RPGs lies in being 16 bit but I still think that the new games are gonna rule.
You've clearly played Chrono Cross. That game leaned towards petite-looking as you say but it still kicked more ass than almost any PS1 RPG...save for FF7 and a few others. |
I liked Chrono Cross but I get shit all the time for saying I was disappointed! I LOVED ChronoTrigger and I felt that Cross wasn't a good follow up. My favorite PS1 RPG are Wild Arms and Xenogears. Xenogears my favorite by far though. I also loved its allusions to Christianity and the slight mock of religion that it hinted towards. |
I loved ffII, and ffIII, VII was real cool, but not as good as it's 16 bit predecessors. Anyone ever try the shining force series for the genesis? It was a lot like the FFtactics games...but much better. How about the landstalker game for genesis (I still play both of these about once a year) it was like zelda but 3d. |
Shining Force 1 is my favorite game of all time.
That's why I've recently been getting into Fire Emblem for GBA - it's a lot like the SF games. |
PS:
You can't get any more metal than DarkSol |
The last classic Final Fantasy game, and also my favorite. I still have the poster that came with the cartridge on my wall -- thirteen years later. |
Honestly, when your whole party splits up and you're stranded on the island with Terra, it's such a feeling of lonliness and despair. It's one of the few video games out there that evokes those kind of feelings inside of me. |

Yeah that whole part of the game is pretty emotionally driven. |
R.I.P. - Old man in the yellow rain coat. |
haha.
Kefka is also one of the best enemies in any video game I think. Not only is he a clown, his music is awesome and he's evil to the core.
Ultros the octopus is pretty funny too. |
FF6 had fucking great music but I really feel that Kefka wasn't the best of villains. He didn't feel evil. He just felt like a goofy guy with a goofy way of getting what he wants.
Ultros did rule tho. |
I don't think Kefka holds a candle to Magus in CT. When you first see Magus in CT it pwns. And the fact that he then joins you a little bit later is awesome, too. |
There used to be an Ultros fan club or something. Last I remember it was ultros.com |
Is this the one with a brooding amnesiac protagonist? |
Or is it the one where you spend the first half of the game fighting one antagonist but then it turns out he wasn't all that bad and there's an even greater threat that's going to destroy the world? |
It's the one that deals with an Empire seeking dominance over the world, with one specific guy (Kefka) secretly having his own goals in mind.
I almost cried when everyone came back together in the end. all hail cid! |

A simple "yes" would have worked there.

chrono trigger was awesome and chrono cross just wasnt that good in comparison. i really liked illusion of gaia for super nintendo. |
Well, there's many antagonists. I wouldn't say Emperor Ghestahl plays a huge role in the game until about midway through. Kefka is always the main antagonist, but you find out his real motives with the espers later on.

I was part of an AOL roleplaying clan/ group back in the day. We all had to be moogles and had names. We wrote fanfic about Narshe, and had fake moogle sex.
Cool story, bro. |
haha, i remember those RP groups. i don't miss chat rooms at all. |
So ghey but so 90s..
My old FF screen name: "Kewlmog" |
Those RP groups. Holy fuck. I remember an AOL one with Moogle names...but moogle sex? LOL WUT |
Haha AOL groups, only calling Noobs "Norons" is real. |

R.I.P. - Old man in the yellow rain coat. |
If you do it right he can live. |

anyone else have a problem with the lich ring not working in the advanced version?
i can nerd out on the game all day. who says ff games have no replay value? i beat this one at least once a year. |

Edgar or Sabin: which one is the better brother?
Sabin's blitzs become too tedious and ineffective late in the game. Edgar's tools are awesome at first, but also become obsolete late in the game.
Only saving Shadow is real. |
Relm: What's wrong, lover boy?
Edgar: ...How old are you?
Relm: Ten... Why? Weirdo. I'm going on ahead, okay?
Edgar: Not even a lady yet... Here's hoping you're still around in eight years, kid.

You kidding me? Edgar and Sabin have been in my final party every time I've played. |
Sabin can be very powerful based on sheer stength and also with the genji glove equiped. But his blitz techniques are way too tedious. |

This game rules. I remember playing a newer one that came out after it and being like WTF is this.
FFIII (going by SNES Numerics, not Japan) is definitely one of the best ever. I wouldn't say I like it more than FFII however, which would probably be my vote for best game ever, even though III has multiple endings and free will and more characters, II did even more with less. It dabbled less in cutesy Chocobos and Moogles and Mogs and other kid stuff/cutesy music, sticking with the grandiose and dark moreso. Most importantly, it was character based more than storyline based, never losing focus in the dramatic tale it was trying to tell. While III was cool in that it made you not as focused on Terra as a central character arc in order to widen the roster and expand the possibilities of the stories, II made the gameplayer identify more with Cecil as the story unfolds, creating a greater emotional investment in the game when things actually would pay off. Therefore, I think II edges out III, but that's more a compliment to II than any criticism of III.
I like to use the TNG/DS9 comparison as a parallel - a case where the earlier simpler character driven version is actually even better than the still very good multiple sustained story arc version that came later. |
As much as I love Cecil, I'ma have to disagree big time. |
I was a Beta Tester of the first Final Fantasy! |
using the canonical numbers here - I played IV as a young lad in '92. absolutely loved it and i still remember the village of mist, the two brothers turning to stone to save the party, tellah summoning meteor, definitely one of my all time favorites. but i'm real big on atmosphere and art direction, and the small handful of hours i've played of VI, i just like the presentation better. BUT i can't say shit because i haven't scratched the surface of VI, yet. |

All of you false hipster final fantasy fans are trend following sheeple. Final Fantasy IS the FINAL fantasy. |

Does this mean you killed the first Imp ever? Or did the Imp kill you? |

To be fair I never took the time to finish FFIII, so maybe that would make me appreciate it more; the ending of FFII is one of its best features. |

Silence, knave! You are in the presence of octopus royalty! |

best quote from each game
'you spoony bard' - tellah
'i will create a monument to non-existence' - kefka |

you're using him wrong. He has no armor or good weapons. His best attacks are magic blitz s. you should be raising his magic stat.
i don't know about tedious, but the blitz(s) are over rated. His best one is air blade. yeah you can get bum rushing doing 9999 damage, but you can't choose where it goes. I fucking hate that. Better off getting him to use ultima. |
I'm using him wrong because I don't use him that often. |
I'm using him wrong because I don't use him that often. |
poor choice of words. inefficiently. games all about balance so you can't really use a character wrong if he/she fits your needs.
Then again its not like the game is hard. you can beat it with an average level of 7. |
He worked out just fine the way I used him, but he's not my favorite by any means. Ive beat the game numerous times without paying too much attention to developing Sabin. |
