I always filed Carcass under grind.

AGAIN!?!?

"Reek of Putrefaction" and "Flesh Ripping Sonic Torment" to me are grind, but "Symphonies of Sickness" is so much more death metal than grind and "Necroticism" as well. What makes that album so fucking awesome is how varied and original it is. Death, grind, sick intros, melodic leanings, etc = one of the best (if not the best) death metal albums ever.

Still strikes me as more grind in its spirit and riffing, kind of like Bolt Thrower's later stuff.

There are probably a dozen truly excellent death metal albums, but not too many more. A starter:
