So I finally dealt the fatal blow to my six year old Dell Inspiron, the screen has been trying to come off for about a year one crack/bolt/screw at a time and the fucking thing tore right off last night. If all goes well with my student loan I'm going to just buy a new one. They said I could take out a grand max for laptop purposes...

I don't need fancy. I need the ability to use the wireless internetz, write papers, store some photos, burn said photos to disk, and maybe watch the occasional downloaded show/movie when my DVR fails me. That's it. I don't play games, need insane storage (I've gone 6 years with 20gigs, so an 80 gig is luxury for me) or stellar porno movie playback capabilities like you freaks.

SO any recommendations? Stuff to look out for? Stores to avoid?

Go bake one you fuckin' nancy.

toggletoggle post by pam nli at Mar 4,2008 4:02pm
I have a husband to bake things for me.

I should also point out that I don't do Macs. All set.

That looks good...but who the hell is Acer? They new or am I just out of the loop?

toggletoggle post by dertoxia   at Mar 4,2008 5:45pm
Acer is a freakin huge company from Korea. They make LCD displays for lots of other companys. They're the 3rd largest manufacturer of notebooks in the world. I've had an Acer 5672 for just over a year and love the thing. Their tech support and repair center are based in america.

I work at Staples and sell a ton of Acers

macs are not an option with a budget of less than 1k. they arent an option when you want something that isnt gay either. hell they shouldnt be an option at all.

You don't need anything crazy high powered, so If I were you, I'd go with whatever has the best customer service and warranty.

toggletoggle post by dftg at Mar 4,2008 6:28pm
macs are for elitist scenester pricks who can't figure out how to use a mouse with more than one button.

"I went to art school, and now I use a mac"

go fuck yourself.

my girlfriend's mother has an acer pc that she got recently. i thought it was just some cheapo brand, but i've been seeing them around a lot more lately. my boss has a couple acer monitors on his desk at work.

i have a mac for art stuff. it's great for graphic design and multimedia/interactive/motion graphics stuff. i enjoy using it.

yeah Acer just bought up Gateway and are using the gateway line as a cheap-o sub brand of Acer. They're definitely gonna be a name to remember. I expect that in not too long Acer may even bump HP out of the number 2 slot.

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at Mar 5,2008 12:45am
Acer made a small hand held computer that came very close to hitting the market with the name "The Hand Job"

Those Zany chinese.

Don't do Macs? Sad.

Yet you'll do VISTA?! Vista is the reason I got a Mac. In the end, I'm very glad I did.

I got the most retarded deal on Craigs List. $600 dollars for a 1 month old MacBook. I upgraded a little.

So, for about 860 dollars, I have a 2 GHZ C2D MacBook with 4 gigs of RAM and a 160 gig 7200 RPM hard drive. AND THREE years of Apple Care.

Thank you Craigs List idiot.

toshiba>sony>acer>gateway>dell>mac

my toshiba gives head, if any other computer can beat that then buy it

but in truth, Ive got 2 non-dertoxia friends who only have bad things to say about acer, my one friend has had it die on him twice, the other is a computer n00b so its probably her fault that it sucks

You can still use XP motherfucka!

I can use XP on my Mac, if I wanted. No need.

Fine keep your Mac, but no heaven for you now.

toggletoggle post by pam nli at Mar 5,2008 11:15am
I'm not getting a MAC. I've had a PC with Windows XP for six fucking years and never had one of the problems you Mac-snobs swear I'm supposed to have. No pop-ups, no viruses, no problem.

Thanks for all the non-MAC suggestions. The thought of those Acers having American customer support is tempting. Dell customer support is a fucking nightmare.

Mac. i hate them too but i manage with mine. USB a PC mouse and you get the right click function (i use it and its mostly the same as PC's) and a base mac is only good for the shit you mentioned. surfin the webz, uploadin the picz.

plus they have built in wireless.

toggletoggle post by ZenErik   at Mar 5,2008 1:14pm
I never claimed anything about viruses or anything. Although Windows computers ARE more prone. But anyone with a brain won't have a problem.

However, I've just found Vista to be a nightmare in my limited experience. Almost everyone I know that uses it, hates it.

Macs are more user friendly in that they maintain themselves, for the most part. You don't need to do much to keep it running, usually. Except when your hardware shits the bed; problem with all electronics. AND you can run Windows on them.

Anyway, best of luck with Vista. Might be best to try to get a computer with XP Pro or downgrade to XP Pro.

toggletoggle post by contagion   at Mar 5,2008 1:18pm
the only reason PC's are more prone to viruses is because they have been around longer, people have had the chance to program viruses for them. give mac a few years, i'm sure they'll be disease ridden pieces of shit like the rest of computers out there.

toggletoggle post by ZenErik   at Mar 5,2008 1:20pm
I wouldn't go that far. Apple's market share is growing, but it's still tiny. And yes, the only reason Windows based computers have a billion viruses is because Windows is BY FAR the most used OS out there.

More for Apple will come, in time.

The reason Windows has virus is because the root user is not secure stop buying that bullshit.
It's a known fact.

before os x macs had viruses also...

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Mar 5,2008 2:49pm
PCs are fine just stop running windows till they make a new setup for real.

toggletoggle post by largefreakatzero at Mar 5,2008 3:06pm
Sony Vaio. I have one through work and I just bought my wife one last year. Not cheapest, but problems seem minimal.

I wouldn't know. I don't dig into the reasons why Windows sucks too much. Just going on experience. The best reason for me to have a Mac, I think, is Logic Studio. I guess Pro-Tools is good too, but I love Logic (for free, no less).
