Ok, so recording Herugrim practice has brought it to my attention that I'm not going to be able to hit notes without hearing myself. Ugh.

Anyone have any experience and/or advice on a cheap monitor solution? Specifically for doing clean vocals in a loud live environment?


So far I've poked around looking at in-ear-monitors (FAG, LOL), but it looks like the cheapest ones that don't suck are the Shure PSM 200, and those are gonna run me $5-600 at the least. I've got some GC cash saved up, but I'm pretty broke in real dollars, so that's a last ditch solution. Plus, you know, Madonna, NKOTB, etc.


Barring that, any advice on powered wedge monitors?

It looks like I can pick up the Nady PEM-800 for $200 - but a) it's a Nady, and b) while I can't find any reviews of this one in particular, the overall impression of the Nady IEMs online doesn't seem to be great.

Singing in key is overrated.

get a pair of bose noise cancelling in ear headphones. then get a 1/8"-1/4" input adapter with a really long extension and there you go. those headphones will cut right through the mix and you'll still get a ton of band in the background because practice is much louder than the every day life noises the headphones are trying to elminate. those are 100 dollars, which is a lot less than the 5-6 you mentioned above. i could be wrong but im pretty sure in ear monitor is a fancy term for headphones so it should work well.

It also includes the wireless unit and transmitter, though. The headphones usually come with, but those can be changed out. They should, in theory, cancel external noise as well as piping in your monitor sound.

the wireless is key but im sure you could hook any headphones into a wireless unit on the receiving end.

Dude, not so much on the clean intro ('cause I can still hear myself), but on the galloped bridge it's pretty bad. And the middle acoustic-y verse isn't anywhere near where I want it to be.

heh, no shame in that. we gonntry to bring some more cables in so we can mic from more points in the room.

Practice your parts. At practice, at home, in the shopping malls, in the bathroom stalls, etc...

Because no matter what you do, you'll never be able to hear yourself live. Get however you like at rehearsal, you'll still blow it live if you can't sing without hearing yourself clearly.

It takes getting used to, but eventually you'll be fine.
