Worth it when you realize how long it takes to back up, defrag, or find shit on a full 500 gig drive.

I need to get a new hd, internal or external is my only dilemma though, I dunno. My drive on this thing is only 200gig and it is filling up fast. Porn free though I might add.

um.. no, not worth it at all. for $100 you get a 500gb drive: $.20 per GB. a drive that is brand new and has a 3-5 year exchange warranty.
or $50 for a 120gb and you pay $.42 per GB for a 4 year old drive with at most a 90 day warranty.

also, what is the mean failure rate for a hard drive? 3-5 years. exactly. also, what is the mean failure rating of the 120gb drive? I'm guessing 1/2 the 500gb. what is the max resting gshock of the 120gb? 60G max. the 500gb would be 350G btw.

and arrowhead, external drives are use for back up, not running. so it doesn't matter how long it takes to defrag (cmd your defreg and schedule it anyhow) and it's a back up not running so it dosnt need to be defragged or atleast not aggressively since it's not a running drive. adding to that is that externals usually have HUGE files send to them so they are less likely to fragment the file system.

oh, if the 120gb is 2.5" then I retract my statement and would buy one right now. I was assuming that both drives in question are 3.5". if so, you guys are retards if you buy the 120gb over the 500gb

arrowhead: I say "no duh" to you in my most condecending 80's tone that I possibly can give you. live recording to an external should be a last resort. record it to an internal drive (3/gbps max) and then "back it up" to the external (800mbps max firewire, 480mbps max usb).

it's also not just about the extra $50 for the drive. it's about buying a better product. 120gb drives are 4-5 yo technology. though, I hae a cost effective item for you. let me shit in a box and stick a $20 2gb flash card in it and you can use that. ok? granted the eces will probably ruin the flash memory pretty quickly, but at least you saved 1/2 the cost of the drive, right?

Most studios back up to external, using a drive per project and allowing the bands the option of buying the drive itself so they can bring it elsewhere. Even a relatively large project won't be taking a full 500 gig. Why spend double on extra space you don't need?

cause you get something both newer and 4x more reliable. 120gb are old technology. migrate upwards. if you are going to get 120gb drives, get laptop drives otherwise you are investing in something that is already passed the end of it's life cycle. I don't have a single 120gb that still works. even my 200gb died.. hell, only one of my 250gb works.

ok, I see your point... after losing so many things on hard drive failures, my gf paying $800 for a 80GB data retrieval, all the convos at work, and learning the hardway that if you buy shit, you will just end up buying the good stuff later so buy the good stuff first and a save your $$, I'm a little jaded with cutting certain corners.

I figure that as an artist, your work is paramount and backing it up is too. I always tell people, back up to more than one location and more than one media.

dood find me any harddrive with more than 80 gigs for 49.99. this one comes with a case, 120 gb, and usb 2. if ur on a tight budget and need an hd... its a good buy. especially for people who have laptops and are in college and dont know shit about compys.

or they save up mommy's and daddy's month up another 3 days and get a 500GB for $100.
