You're right. The mallet broke and his lodged in his face or eye. His eye isn't falling out.

That's what it looks like to me, I'm pretty sure the drum stick broke and stuck into his cheek.

Why would he try to pull his eyeball though? Makes more sense being the drum stick. Plus I think his fellow drummer may have been a little more concerned about a hanging eyeball.

clearly broke the mallet, I can't tell if it is sticking into his cheek or eye though.
