New site? Maybe some day.
*wets self*
wait, why am I posting this? |
damn that thing is nice and $$$$$$$$$$$$$ |
blue's gonna get taken out conveniently whilst carrying that head out of or into a show. just sayin... |
Is this another one to add to your great collection?
Or are you going to be selling some of your other great amps? |
Dave, you have the Pitbull right?
Both are killer amps; nice buy Blue Man Group. |
yeah the Pitbull sounds really good but its got a ton of knobs and EQ on it. I would like something a little more basic |

i sold my 5150 II for a shitload, which funded this. i still have my fender prosonic, which is almost if not just as awesome sounding as the vht. but the vht gets me more amp snob points. |
i bet no one else here has a lee jackson ampeg. amp snob points for days |
blue that fender prosonic was hella weird at that lowell show. Stop lying to yourself. the vht will rule. |
i realized after the show why, my tubescreamer's tone knob was cranked all the way making it waaaay to spiky. im still trying to figure out which head sounds better honestly. dane and tim both say they like the prosonic better. |
the only heads I am really stoked on lately are:
All tube Orange heads (though the solid states aint half bad)
Peavey VTMs
Peavey Ultra Gain series
Heads I am not stoked on lately:
Peavey 5150s
Mesa Boogies
Marshall solid states
Line 6 heads
Nick the Mesa Boogie mark series heads are great. Too bad everyone plays the rectos instead.
Only way I like rectos is in the mix with other, better amps. |

It's possible, but I have yet to hear or play a Mesa that didn't sound like way too crisp and fucked up sounding shit
Like the gain on those pushes totally wrong...
I'll keep an eye out and try a Mark series at some point, though, to be fair |
Mark IV for the win.
I hate the entire recto line. |
yeah, the whole recto line has this weird unfocused vibe to it. That's why it's only good underneath a focused amp. It definitely helps a tight amp sound huge. |
oranges are excellent, the rockerverbs are the best theyve got going right now. the new tiny terror thats out now too ive heard fantastic things about as well.
peavey vtms are the same thing as your butcher, nick just with a bunch of 'mod' switches. the ultras and 5150s arent that far apart from each other though, so i dont see where youre coming from on that.
rectos are a finicky beast. ive found that the older 2 channel rectos are the far superior sounding animal, where as the more recent 3 channel ones are the ones responsible for getting the rap of being buzzy and fizzy.
boogie series mark amps are by far their greatest creations though. mountains of thick syrupy tone.
i dont know who have ever like marshall solid states though, some of the worst sounds i have ever heard in my life have come out of those.
I've never liked a single marshall's tone, solid or tube. |
jcm 800s rule, jcm 900 slxs rule and ive heard fantastic things about the new JVM. |

the sound of an 800 blasting really loud is the most rockinest tone ever |
The ultra gain and 5150 seem enough apart that the 5150 rubs me the wrong way...I've played through both, and the sound from the Ultra Gain 120 and the Ultra Gain (I forget what goes here) that I played in Ohio were both most triumphant. The 5150 -can- sound good, but the Ultra Gain series -does- sound good right out. |
boss 7band eq->bbe sonic max->alesis quadraverb->5150
you can make it sound like a lot of different competing amps |
I still don't get the whole bbe sonic maximizer fetish. I got one out of curiosity and I thought it cut down on all of the natural tone of the guitar/amp. Only took a couple of months to realize that it belonged in the PA loop and not my loop.
I don't regret buying it because it makes everything going through the PA sound crystal clear |
bbes work well for bass players and PAs IMO. everytime ive ever thrown them in a guitar rig it just makes things sound a little cloudier and scoopps my mids. anything that scoops mids is something i stay away from. |
the guitar is a mid / treble instrument.
Element the mid and it sounds like crap
I have no idea why they made those "mid cut" buttons on amps for a while |
sonic maximizers will not sound right unless you go through the effects loop. serious. |
oh, and congrats blue. that amp is ill. |

well, obviously. This is how I used it. Still scoops the fuck out of your mids. No thanks for anything that does that. |

you still see them on amps all the time. its because for some reason beyond me it became cool to scoop your mids to achieve that 'aggressive metal tone' when in fact its what morons do in their bedrooms. scooped mids sound great when youre wanking away a bedroom volumes but god help you when you crank that thing up. |

Here's the other problem with scooping:
As I said before, you got this mid/treble instrument. Kill the mid, what do you get? You got it, pretty much treble.
So put a bass player in...he's doing all the work on the low end. Now your low end sound gets masked by his. So all the audience hears is fucking HISSY TREBLE and NO definition to whatever is being played.
I see this so often, and it's such a simple thing to fix.
Food for thought, Brian Viglione taught me how to properly EQ an amp when I was 16. Weird, huh? |
VHT's are sweet!
I did some recording or the weekend. I ran my bass split though an old Kustom bass amp into a bergantino 6/10 and into a 50 watt Orange into a Laney 2/12.
Both my Traynor YBA 200 and Ashdown ABM500 are in the shop..boo for broken gear.
I had a VTM120 and just sold it a couple of months ago nice sounding amp.
Guitarist for Presley has an older 2 channel Rectifier and the Easter Bloodhound guitarist has a JCM800..
I'm kind of thinking of biting the bullet and pick up an Orange AD200 they sound so fucking awesome...I have heard about reliability issues.. |
