BLACKSBURG, Va. - On a university campus of 2,600 acres, with more than 26,000 students, ironclad security is not a practical goal. Even so, tough questions swiftly surfaced as to how effectively Virginia Tech authorities responded to Monday's horrific massacre.

Why were campus police so sure the threat was contained in one dormitory, when most of the killings occurred two hours later in a classroom building?

Why were they interviewing a “person of interest” off campus in regard to the first shootings at the very time the classroom killings were unfolding?

Why was there a lag of more than two hours after the first shootings before an alarm was e-mailed campuswide — around the time another, more deadly burst of carnage occurred? And more generally, some security experts wondered, was the school's crisis planning and emergency communications system up to the task?

Clearly, something went terribly wrong.

Bombarded with security questions at a news conference, Virginia Tech President Charles Steger said authorities believed the shooting at the West Ambler Johnston dorm, first reported about 7:15 a.m., was a domestic dispute and mistakenly thought the gunman had fled the campus.

"We had no reason to suspect any other incident was going to occur," he said.

'Where do you lock them down?'
The dormitory was locked down immediately after the shooting, Steger said, and a phone bank was activated to alert the resident advisers there so they could go door-to-door warning the 900 students in the dorm. Security guards deployed at the dorm, he said, and others began a sweep across campus.

Asked why he didn't order a lockdown of the entire campus, Steger noted that thousands of nonresident students were arriving for 8 a.m. classes, fanning out across the sprawling campus from their parking spots.

"Where do you lock them down?" Steger asked.

He said security on campus will be tightened now, but offered no details.

"We obviously can't have an armed guard in front of every classroom every day of the year," he said.

Overall, Steger defended the university's response, saying: "You can only make a decision based on the information you know at that moment in time. You don't have hours to reflect on it."

Virginia Tech Police Chief Wendell Flinchum said there no surveillance cameras in place that recorded the gunman entering Norris Hall, the classroom building where 31 people were killed. Among the dead was the gunman, who killed himself before police could break through a chained door and reach the second-floor room where the massacre occurred.

Some students were upset that the gunman was able to strike a second time, saying the first notification they got of the shootings came in an e-mail at 9:26 a.m. The e-mail mentioned a "shooting incident" at West Ambler Johnston, said police were investigating, and asked students to be cautious and contact police about anything suspicious.

Student Maurice Hiller said he went to a 9 a.m. class two buildings away from the engineering building, and no warnings were coming over the outdoor public address system on campus at the time.

I think it's disturbing that anyone is willing to just accept this and move on without looking into what could have been done better. If we look at what could have been done better...this will have a much smaller chance of happening again. If campus's take this horrible thing and use it to think about THEIR crisis plans...and improve on them, at least something came out of this.

1- He was South Korean, not Chinese.

2- Classes were NOT canceled after the first shooting. Nearly 2 and a half hours passed between those first 2 murders and the rampage across campus. The rampage happened in a CLASSROOM. They had no trouble locking down the dorms and spreading the word AFTER the kid smoked 30 people in the 2nd building, they could have at least TRIED to get the word out and cancel classes until the killer was caught.

Is that a solid, foolproof solution that would have absolutely saved everyone? No. But word travels fast, and even if 3 or 4 of those dead kids heard and decided to stay in their dorm, it would have been worth the effort. Saying "welllll we have a big campus" isn't good enough for me, sorry. If you made an effort that didn't work because of the big campus, that'd be one thing. But they didn't even try. The students and parents have every right to question the police and school.

No one is shifting all their blame to the school, but to complacently accept this and not stop and say "OK, what could we have done better, and how will we be more prepared in the future" is fucking irresponsible. I'm not saying we should be stringing these cops up, or firing them, but fuck them to consider people out of line for asking questions.

At least the people after The Station fire who decided to bust their asses tightening regulations and fire codes were fucking doing something instead of being armchair philosophers. I would rather my school maybe install an intercom system instead of just say "man, there's nothing we can do because everyone's kids are fucked up".

Sorry but you don't get to rightfully condemn people that TRY to prevent the worst case scenario after tragedies happen. Yeah, it always takes a tragedy to make people care...welcome to human history. All of your bitching isn't going to do anything. People are going to be fucked up. In all seriousness though, I cannot fathom the rational of blaming the police. If anyone is to blame (and that is second only to the douche bag who should have just offed himself first before killing 30+ people) it is the school administration. With 2 bodies in the dorms and no gun classes should have been canceled. Period. On 9/11 I was living at Fitchburg State and going to Mt. Wachusett Comm. College and not only were MWCC classes canceled, but my dorm was evacuated because it was a "high rise building" - like the rag heads were going to target Russel Towers next! I am beside myself as to why classes, which start at 8, were not canceled after a 7:15ish shooting leaving 2 dead in the dorms. Pretty fucked up to say the least.

Your job as a police officer is to assume the worst, control the situation, and stop what threat you can from happening to protect people from harm. These police officers failed. The school failed. The gunman pulled the trigger because he was upset over not getting a PS3 under the three this year. The cops allowed it to happen.

This is why I think people should only post about music and music related subjects.... There are some fucked up, Ignorant people on this site.

bill o'reilly had a great gun control show on today and I think he's a fucking douchebag. basically, no non-residents can buy guns and all guns must be registered.

if everyone had guns, there would be a fuckload more shootings. especially in college where alcohol, depression, and testoserone are served everyday. suicides alone would skyrocket.

I think that's logical and gibes well with constitutional ideals.

with the migraines I used to get in college and the drs not iving me anything for it.. I tell you I probably would have blown my head off. thankfully, there weren't any around and I can mostly control them now.

nothing like puking and crying in the shower for 2 or 3 hours to kill your night.
