I had Bittorrent on my old computer and thought that I had it on this one. I find myself needing one and I remember hearing that there are much better programs, help a brother out.

BitMeTV.org is fucking amazing.

toggletoggle post by brian_dc  at Feb 21,2007 10:21am
thanks guys. I got Azureus because it was what my roomate recommended to me previously.

toggletoggle post by watchmaker666  at Feb 21,2007 10:27am
Ive used both Azureus and uTorrent and I got much faster DL speeds with uTorrent, not sure why but the difference was dramatic

toggletoggle post by brian_dc  at Feb 21,2007 10:28am
hmm. I'll give it a week then I'll switch.

utorrent

toggletoggle post by Niccolai   at Feb 21,2007 12:22pm
this is the comparison that made me choose utorrent:

µTorrent is:

Fast as hell, blinding launch speed
Intuitive, you don't need to think
Powerful, good for intermediates
Lightweight (96k total)
Fully-automated upgrade process
Updated frequently
A single binary, no other files
The best Windows BitTorrent client around
Now my default BitTorrent client

Azureus is:

Java-based, slow
Bulky, clunky
Overkill for regular BitTorrent users
No longer my default BitTorrent client.

Man, to achieve 20 meg per second you must be downloading torrents with tens of thousands of seeders, or a bunch of dumbasses who will let you saturate all of their bandwidth

toggletoggle post by menstrual_sweatpants_disco   at Feb 21,2007 1:36pm
Nope, just a really good non-public torrent community.

Azureus is updated frequently and has a fully-automated update process too. I'll agree, though, that it is java-based and is a CPU hog if you've got a slower computer.

Bram Cohen (creator of the BitTorrent protocol) had previously been forced to sell/partner with the Major Studios/mpaa because he was being threatened with legal action. Now, Ludde, the developer of utorrent, has sold utorrent to Bram's venture. This means that utorrent is now partiall/wholly owned by the very people you read about who are suing children and grandmothers for filesharing, and who have taken down many torrent sites over the last few years.

Now I'll post some equally scary Azureus news... this was taken from BitMeTV's forum:

AZUREUS
AZ has started a new commercial branch called ZUDEO which identifies itself as AZ 3.x.x.x, and had claimed that 2.5.0.2 was the final 2.x.x.x stable that would ever be released, and all future versions would identify themselves jsut like zudeo, as AZ 3.x.x.x. this raised concerns because we would not be able to tell if a member was using ZUDEO or AZUREUS, and we want nothing to do with zudeo, since we feel it is a security risk, and because zudeo identifies itself as AZ.

Azureus claimed that zudeo was simply a different user-interface for AZ, but zudeo incorporates DRM, and has alligned itself with people/organizations that end with initials **AA. While investigating zudeo, two of our admins, system & ibslice discovered that packets of data were being sent back to AZ, and when confronted, AZ devs at first denied, then said it was only anonymous info about how the client was working, then our staffers discovered that the packets being sent back contained your total UL stats, your total DL stats, and your ISP name/info. We replied to AZ with this information, and in a seeming panic, they did two things:
1. admitted privately that this had been going on with ALL recent AZ stable releases for the last 12 months
2. immediately put together and released AZ 2.5.0.4. to fix the problem
Who knows what other private data on you they have aquired, and if they do indeed keep this data confidential?

I use bittornado, though occassionally when I download stuff, my computer just randomly shuts off for no reason and then basically says that my computer has gone through a serious error when it restarts. Not sure if it's bittorent or not? I was thinking of switching to utorrent.

probably not because of bittornado, but it could definately be malware related. I'd check out the geekstogo.com forums.

Yeah, I used it on my brother in law's computer and it worked fine. I'm sure my computer is just borked.

Could a nigga get an invite?

toggletoggle post by menstrual_sweatpants_disco   at Feb 22,2007 7:20pm
I'm too new there. No invite capabilities yet. I had to beg to get my invite. This place is strict, too. They'll ban anybody who sends out an invite to someone who doesn't keep their ratio up or someone who lets their account die. I'm currently seeding 26 torrents and had to buy $30 worth of upload credit via paypal in the beginning to get my ratio up. It's so fucking worth it, though. I've never seen a torrent community this dedicated to quality and keeping a diverse selection of shit on hand.

I love how everyone failed to notice these posts.

Meanwhile, you'll still find me trolling the swedish and polish DC++ hubs, laughing at all you torrent users. I just finished getting spiderman 3, Pirates of the Carribean 3, TMNT (awesome movie), Hot Fuzz, Ghost Rider, The entire first season of Heroes, Every episode of Metalocalypse, The new Megadeth, about 15 Roger Waters albums/collections, about 10 Zeppelin albums, and some other assorted CD's and videos in less than one weekend.

Don't use the default hublist. I think it doesn't work anymore anyways. Go to a good hublist site, and try a few lists. Make sure you're sharing at least 30-100 gig, as most of the good foreign hubs have minimum share requirements. Join and bookmark the 3 or 4 most populated hubs off each list. Once you've got a few decent sized hubs bookmarked (try for 5000+ users per hub) you should be able to find damn near everything you need.

DC++ is 100% peer to peer. No sharing takes place across a central hub. Since I use hubs based overseas, copyright laws and such have no authority. Since it's peer to peer, the only way RIAA or some other sort could get your info is if you download or upload to an riaa member, or if they demanded your info from the hub server. Since the latter would only be possible if it were a U.S. based hub, you've really got little to worry about.

Obviously with any filesharing app or method, you should be careful. I never leave shit running when I'm not at the computer, and I always watch my uploads like a hawk, seeing who is looking at my filelists and downloading what. Remember, the RIAA hasn't been going after anyone for downloading. It's the uploads they're worried about. You can easily get around this by building a 30 gig folder of free porno sample movies from varying websites. No illegal uploads means nothing they can sue you for.

toggletoggle post by ArrowHead NLI at Jun 19,2007 11:05am
Also, with DC++, I do a lot of tangental searching. By that, I mean that I'll do a search for a specific file, then go through the results and dowload filelists until I find a user with a nice fast connection. Then, I'll download the file I wanted, and bookmark the user. After getting what I want, I'll look through their list to see if there's anything else I might want. That's how I ended up with those roger waters albums and the first season of heroes.

Oh man, I hate downloading large files like movies and apps from direct connect hubs. They're either TERRIBLY slow or whoever is sharing just disconnects.

The only time I really go on direct connnect is for finding music. And the only hub I ever go on is grindcore.no-ip.org:411

As for speed, I always go down the search results list and download their filelist to check what kind of speed they have. I rarely download slower than 80 kbps, which will take around 3 hours for a full film. Yeah, it's not super fast, but if you've got 4-5 different movies downloading while you watch t.v. or play some games, it's not bad at all.

As for people logging off, you can just go into dowload qeue, right click the file, search for alternates, and choose "dowload to .. (original file), the download will pick up exactly where the other left off.
