Well, if Mercyful Fate and Iron Maiden are rock as opposed to metal, I need to change my list a little, but I don't think they are. Or was this supposed to be anything that isn't death/black metal?

"THE CLASH - The only band that matters... to old white dudes who like to punk-rock out to social atrocities they will never know of first hand or even try to stop. Like Rage Against The Machine, they spewed political rhetoric way over the heads of their retarded fans in the hopes of spreading their message. The message was, "Hey, buy our album so you can feel good about how political you are." What you got was a steady stream of diarrhea genre hopping: reggae, whiteboy rap, limp rockabilly, and dub. If only they had stuck around long enough for emo I'm sure they would have put their spin on that too.

They created one of the worst indie DJ set numbers with "This Is Radio Clash". There's nothing like dance punking to white guilt and millions of dead soldiers while being rapped to by a gay disco drill instructor. Oh, and thanks for inspiring the first mall punk band, Rancid."

See this is what confused me a bit, because people list groups like Black Sabbath and Motorhead - these groups could be called "rock and roll" or "heavy metal". Bands like Maiden and Mercyful Fate, they're usually lumped in with the metal tag, but they have a lot of rock influence....with older bands it's hard to say, since the term "heavy metal" was fairly new.

AC/DC definitely don't suck. If you're not into their style, whatever. They're not out to impress anyone with stunning musicianship, they just play good fuckin dirty rock and roll. A lot of their albums are pretty generic, and they're overplayed on rock radio, but I give them a lot of credit mainly because they've never, ever changed their style, they never went soft, they never sold out, and while I think only one or two of their albums are worth owning, they never made a bad record in their whole career.

toggletoggle post by keith lost his password at Dec 16,2006 10:16pm
thats because they never wrote a second song. it was an entire "legacy" off playing almost the same damn thing.

Not really. Obviously it does sound like that if you're not very familiar with their stuff, but once you listen to an album a few times the songs become more distinguished. There are tons of bands whose songs sound very similar until you start listening to the band more. When I first got Sleep's Holy Mountain, I was like "Damn, if it weren't for the gaps between songs I wouldn't know where one song ends and another begins", but after I listened to it a few times I realized how different the songs were. Same thing with Battles In The North by Immortal, anything by Lamb Of God, and lots of death metal.

I had to leave out some favs like Blue Cheer, Turbonegro and yes, Nashville Pussy.
Megan If you like NP then I suggest checking out Butthole Surfer's "Independent Worm Saloon" album. its a nice piece of confrontational dirty punk injected full throttle middle finger rawk that'll have you cussin' and drinkin' in no time.

I like AC/DC, but I call them generic because about every one of their albums are alike as far as overall sound and style. Putting out 30 years of the same style music can get repetitive, but on the other hand, I really respect them for not changing at all through all the trends that have come and gone. They could have easily made a grunge record, or a nu-metal album or they could start playing melodic death with hardcore breakdowns for today's crowd, but they never did and never will, and I commend them for it.
