It's now available in my area.

$35/month for 5Mbps down & 2Mbps up

or

$45/month for 15Mbps down & 2Mbps up

15 down, holy crap!
My bro did tcwo 'broadband' it was dsl, on bathtub crank, but even here in NH it was very spotty. Our comcast up here is pretty consistent, so he stayed with that, but the tcwo would have spurts of 10 mb down, and when it worked it was amazing.

2Mbps up? that's getting close to being able to run RTTP from my home...
I need 10Mbps for that

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Aug 30,2006 11:41am
i have rcn on one of those sketchy broadband tests it says
Download Speed: 10177 kbps (1272.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 712 kbps (89 KB/sec transfer rate)

is fios through the phone-line?

toggletoggle post by thegreatspaldino   at Aug 30,2006 12:18pm

it probably won't be too much longer before the 10Mbps upload mark is a common thing, but wouldn't you need more then that to run RTTP if downloads are like >30~50 Mbps?

I ran a site from my house before, and the only worries I ever had were power outages, and comcast with their occasional hiccups.

Just like any other residential broadband, web servers aren’t allowed in their ToS. I’ve been trying to piece together some info I’ve been reading with what a professor at my school was telling me. He had FiOS service that he was using for business. He was mentioning something about how his servers and routers weren’t able to work as they should. He said they were NATing out an address to you. That seems to be the case now that I’m reading that the next hop outside of the router they provide you will be a 10.x.x.x IP somewhere in Verizon land off your property. I’ve also read that like DSL, FiOS uses PPPoE (boo). If you sign up for the business plan for boatloads more cash, though, I believe they will give you static IPs and ditch the NAT crap. I think my professor was just a cheap asshole trying to use the residential service, which sounds like him.

During installation Verizon apparently comes to your house, runs fiber from the pole down to an optical network terminal (ONT) that they install outside your house. This thing also supposedly has a battery backup in it. Your home phone is also converted over to fiber too. As far as I know, they run Cat5e out of this thing into your house. I assume they connect this thing to your old phone demarc too. This thing is also cable ready, so when they decide to offer their FiOS TV service they’ll be using this as well.

That's no fun but is probably designed to limit its usefulness to spam, bots, back orifice, etc.

If I ever win the lottery and I get that I'm sure I can find a way for that to be too slow for me.

toggletoggle post by menstrual_sweatpants_disco   at Oct 4,2006 1:39pm

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Oct 4,2006 1:40pm

I'm pretty sure the price I was looking at was $389.00 a month for a Fat Pipe connection.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Oct 4,2006 2:39pm
if I could get 10Mbps dedicated to my home, the RTTP server would be there.

Download Speed: 4803 kbps (600.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 349 kbps (43.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
my comcast sucks.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at May 5,2007 11:46pm

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at May 5,2007 11:46pm
on a quadcore machine with 4GB RAM.

toggletoggle post by DeRtOxIa   at May 5,2007 11:50pm

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at May 6,2007 12:13am
that's weird.

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at May 6,2007 4:00pm

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at May 6,2007 4:02pm

toggletoggle post by DeRtOxIa   at May 6,2007 8:03pm

toggletoggle post by JayTUS nli at May 6,2007 9:32pm
I'm supposed to have 5 MB service through Charter, and have thought my service has been incredibly slow. Just took that test and got:

Last Result:
Download Speed: 370 kbps (46.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 122 kbps (15.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

Should I be calling Charter bitching tomorrow?

toggletoggle post by DeRtOxIa   at May 6,2007 10:18pm
try the speed test using different servers. if you keep getting around that then yeah i would be complaining. tell them you want to be refunded for all the months that you havn't been getting the full speed.

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at May 7,2007 10:17am
20585 kbps down 4244 kbps up on NY
the rest of the cities show drastically lower results.

toggletoggle post by menstrual_sweatpants_disco   at May 7,2007 1:59pm
I still love FiOS. I'm seeding torrents almost 24/7. Only had about 15 minutes of downtime as far as I can tell in the 9 months I've had it.
