the new management at O’Brien’s is so lax on moshing rules, etc...each show I got to there seems to push the rules harder and harder... I wonder if they will break at some point and do no moshing again. This is the first show I saw both stage diving and someone pulled out (since moshing's been allowed that is).

Abnormality: since I forgot to write the review about them before. this is the first real "deathmetal" female fronted local band that I can really think of (hekseri are more gore/trash and RK/others were more metalcore). Mallika's got a 300lb voice in a 90lb bag. granted, it's not as wide sounding (on the low end) as some males on the scene, but she can easily cover the range of any Teratism songs. MikeDOM does a lot of back ups and at many points is yelling at a high pitch that the lead lows. He tosses in a few of the spindaley/noodley solos (more defined and slower than ascendancy's but similar). jere plays more standard deathmetal rhythm and riffs. At one point during their set, his unit started crapping out. With no bassist, he fills out the low end making it impossible to play with out him. they should have turned up the guitars a bunch. while, jay's gotten tighter and more consistent drumming since his goratory days, his triggers sound weird. The kick is a little too punchy. I don't know how trigger units work, but speaking in audio terms, it's too compress with the compression attack limiting the kicks so they fall off abruptly. you can tell that mallika isn't very experienced talking into a mic. At the beginning and when there were technical difficulties, her lack of 100% confidence surfaced. This confidence will come with practice and time. some bands just learn "catch phrases" and repeat them in a death metal voice. This being josh's birthday, he requested Cocaine.

it's my new kodak camera (full frame nikon). I accidentally turned on the digital exposure correction. it sucks that it seems to adjust the exposure up 1-stop over correct exposure. since the images were probably a stop or 2 under exposed, 2 or 3 stops will cause noise.

I was in a literal human tug-o-war during Sexcrement.
One of the guys ( not sure of his name, but he did the soun d for us once, nice guy) tried dragging Nick (my singer) out.
There was a struggle for a bit, myself pulling Nick's legs and the crew pulling at his torso, until the "security" gave up. Then some asshole tried to play vigilante trying to toss Nick out. The kid was then laid out by big-man Jason Gibbs, then that dispute was cleared up by Adam putting the kid in a mid-song choke-hold.

thanks to everyone who came out and even showed up early for the BBQ. the show was a total success and I was really happy with everything. i just got back from the hospital, gonna have to do a follow up, but i got an immobilizer on my leg - x-rays didn't detect tissue damage, but whatever. i got some percs! huge thanks to rick for hooking me up with that vyke before i played and the morphine which will lull me to dream land tonight.

I'm the dick/pussy who dragged the kid out. All I saw was him jumping in and elbowing a few people. Ian grabbed him to talk to him and Ian got elbowed in the face. Ian then grabbed him to throw him out and he kept elbowing and pushing us away, so jumped in and grabbed him by the arms and tossed him out. Why? Because he wouldn't even let us attempt to get him to settle down. Ian even grabbed him a few times to get him to settle down before then. We've all been going to shows for years and we all know the gestures people use to get people to calm down. All of them were ignored. And since you were outside the whole fucking time and only saw me dragging him outside you wouldn't have seen him elbow ian in the face and knock out a lense from his glasses or any of the other bullshit he pulled.

You would have dragged him out aggressively, too if you were getting legs kicked at you and elbows thrown at you for trying to boot someone. I wouldn't go as far as saying I was violent. You should look up the term. And if I let him get on his feet again he'd have just run and been 10x more of a struggle.

and since you taking the effort to call me a pussy, hit your fucking drums instead of using triggers.

there is a "no moshing" rule there. but the new management allows it as long as you don't hit the sound board or knock over the speakers. every time I've seen the fanatories at o'breins, they have been out of or near out of control.
IMHO, people should just calm down a little in the pit a bit and watch out for the equipment. just be glad it wasn't like it was a year or two ago. hit the sound board once and you might get kicked out. hit it twice and the sound dude would cut the power pack it up and walk out of the club.

That sucks Josh. I have severely dislocated my patella before and suffered alot of tissue damage. I was in an immobilizing brace and crutches for a few months and then months of physical therapy.

There was a kid who was way outta line in the pit the whole night. so outta line the the singer of the band on stage had to straighten him out. But he wasn't kicked out at all. You might want to put up a sign that notifies your patrons of your twisted mosh rules, since very few people knew there was any. While your at it put a sign that says "no triggers allowed".

yo, i actually do'nt know what drum triggers are, can anyone explain it?

There's a lot of adjustment & calibration involved to prevent mis or multiple triggering, or triggerring from other vibrations around the drums.
I'm using mechanical triggers on my kicks. They're made by Axis Percussion & mount on Axis Pedals. Instead of triggering off the drum head, they trigger off the pedal. there is a secondary mini beater that mounts on the pedal axle & a trigger box that mounts below it. You allign the mini beater to hit the trigger @ the same time the pedal beater hits the head. It's way more accurate & much less likely to mis-trigger.

Basically it's electronic drums w/ triggers instead of electronic pads.

I think that fear factory has use live trigged drums that click off 3 beats per trigger hit. atleast that's what I was told when they played in 97-98 at the palladium with slayer.

the argument is that you can basically hardly hit your drums and it sounds like you're hitting them normally, meaning you can sound super fast just by tapping on them.

I've missed one slayer tour in the past 8 years. That was a great show. My favorite Slayer show was at Hampton Beach casino in 1999. I don't remember who opened. I think it may have been Sevendust or some other numetal band. But Slayer was amazing that night.

Valasyrka: if I'm not mistaken, this is the first time I got to see them with an ok sound system. At the natick show, zacks bass got buried. Here, I didn't really know what he was doing until the solo. He played a lot of high-end (for a bass) which puts it in the range of a bass guitar and blends with the other guitar. The crowd all sat down for the solo part. At the beginning there were a lot of talking vocals that I didn’t care for, but all the others ruled. Vocals at the beginning were just ok. More talking than screaming. After a while, they got better.

Sexcrement: they kept asking for sac, but he wasn't around. This was the craziest set of moshing for the longest amount of til that I've ever seen at O’Brien’s. The whole set was a non-stop mosh pit. People fell down, stage-dove, got thrown on stage, At one point there was this roaming push fight. It started when they tried to toss one of the Animals Rampaging. And sort of traveled down the line until Adam had to get off the stage and pull people off each other. Vocals at the beginning sounded blah. Does adam have to warm up his voice? After 2 songs, it got good, it was just at the beginning.

Porphyria: tim’s last show and all. He did an awesome job over the years and it will be weird seeing them without him. At one point, they proved what is the difference between a band that practices a cover (abnormality) and a band that doesn’t.. like their attempt at a backinblack cover.
