i was really drunk at some fucking bar in williamsburg in brooklyn this weekend, and some gay guy claimed that he is a big fan of DARK METAL... which i obviously said "isn't that ALL metal?". the only band could name was THORN. i expect them to look like this:
but they are really this i guess?
http://www.thorn.w.interia.pl/edysk.html
he didn't know who venom was or any of the other bands i listed off were. |
Bethlehem is a perfect example of it.
That pic looks like 80's euro dance trash. |
I think Aeternus claimed to be Dark Metal. |
Similar to Holocaust Metal, or Anti-Cosmic Metal of Death. |
he didn't know who venom was
he is not even a cursory listener of heavy metal, much less dark metal
I REPEAT:
he didn't know who venom was
RIGHT OFF THE FUCKING BAT EVERYONE, once you find out they don't know Venom they are IMMEDIATELY a fucking poser. And please tell them so in no uncertain terms.
Thank you. |
he was really really really gay, it was great.
but he has to be into metal, i mean come on, he had black eye shadow on! |
after hearing the new venom, I don't know who they are either.
HOWUZA! |
its like black metal, only not as black. |
yeah, dark metal would make me think of goth metal. |
From what I've gathered over the past decade or so when the term 'dark metal' first came into circulation (with the band Bethlehem and their album 'Dark Metal' as an example), it often sounds like black metal but has more gothic influence, or simply a slightly altered sound based in black metal roots. Occasionally, they sound the same. Bethlehem at the time were doomier than most black metal, so that was their difference. Of course now they are an ambient band. |
Why is Venom the key band here? Venom is fucking terrible. |

Man...what.....WHAT?!?!
Haha, anyway the band pictured up talk is clearly a 'visual kei' j-rock band, I hope this kid, whoever he was, wasn't citing them as an example of dark metal. |
I don't know how any of can listen to them, it makes me want to claw my eyes out. |
Heheh, I'm sure that was their intention. I've been listening to Venom since I was a little kid, I thought it was a nice counterpoint to the more snotty NWOBHM stuff, but then again, I even liked some of their more accessible 80s albums with Tony Dolan, so I maintain that I never was and never will be cool . |
To each their own I guess, I only heard one album from Venom, the one with the song black metal on it, and it's so boring, like the elevator music of metal.

I will say that in the early days, Venom were definitely a 'live' band, that is they came off better on stage than the recordings on their records, but I've developed a fondness for the lo-fi stuff anyways. |
I am just not very metal I guess. |
