It's not clean at all. It's legible at times but theres to much noise and the levels are icky.
Not as bad as what I was expecting, but I wouldn't spend money on recording of this quality, I might give you like a tee shirt or a bag of MMs or something. |

SOME of US, myself included, have been recording a long time and done years of study and trial and error to be able to do what we do. Seeing random douchebags go out and buy a soundcard, only to profess themselves as knowledgeable 2 months later, is quite frustrating. If you came across with a little humility, maybe we might take you under our wings, offer pointers, or even send some customers in the start-up market your way. Your current attitude, however, will get you nowhere.

It's not any kind of recording I'd be happy with, but you've also got to consider the other sub$500 demo packages from local studios. I'd say he's comparable with most, however there are a few I've heard that are far better.
It's not so much his recording that would turn people away at first, moreso his cocky attitude and obvious ignorance about the very subject of recording.

it's actually pretty sad that a post about recording turned into a pissing match. that's pretty fucking lame people. alex is currently recording my band, and so far its turning out damn good. and for us he's mix synths and keyboards in addition to the typical lineup. sure he may not have been doing this for that long, but he's dedicated to making everything he records sound the best he can. word up. |

I have a Trident se-20 , Focusrite Twintrak, dbx-386 for pres. I dont run much stuff midi except for my Alesis dm-5, but i plan on getting a midi keyboard to work with reason and soundtank. |

... and my bet is, for the hundreds extra you spent, your recordings don't sound that much better. Aside from that, kyledoes was kidding.
Everything else in order... phantom power is a 18-48v power source provided through balanced cabling to condenser microphones requiring it, and re-amping is only useful if you yourself are completely useless at determining what the right sound is, and getting it right the first time. Decca tree micing, also unnecessary to get a good sound. The AT 4050 is okay, but I'd recommend the CAD E200 instead... it's even a little more transparent. The mic preamps used were those provided within a Mackie CR-1604 board... not the best, but sufficient to get a good strong signal to the computer, and the rest can be done from there.
Lets all keep in mind 1) that one sample everyone is referring to has been downgraded from it's original quality, since MindSpace doesn't allow full-quality posts, and the other 2 weren't paying customers, and 2) for his price point (under $500). the paying customers' recording (the actual recording, not the digital-warbling, low-quality version on MySpace) came out better than other "professional" recordings I've heard costing over $1000.
Let's keep an open mind, and leave the grade-school insults for the hardcore kids talking about the latest show they went to. |

Hmm when is the last time brian or myself charged anyone over $100 for any amount of time from days to weeks?
98% these "proffessional" recordings come out like shit cause of the bands themselves. people think you just throw up some mics on the drums and press record. these people want to go into studios for a weekend or two they spend most of their time fucking around and then after spending the first 26 hours of a project tracking they never leave themselves enough time for a proper mixdown so the engineer pushes a few faders so the band can go home with a cd but in reality you should spend at least twice as long mixing as you did tracking. So I blame most bands for not budgeting mixdown time.

The CR series has simple built-in preamps (analog, though not tube). Recording to computer allows versatility and ease that are much more costly via outboard analog gear. All the same, everything he used up to the computer was an analog signal path, including processing on the mics, allowing some of the benefits of each method.

That's probably why ProTools is so popular with the multi-million dollar producers.

It matters because the other two recordings were basically live takes in a practice space, without any preparation or implementation of actual recording techniques... the purpose of one was to just get down quick recordings of new band material, not to produce a professional record, and the other was just getting used to new programs. The more important point is that the other two weren't customers; they were recordings with his own bands.

I don't really know that much about recording, and I definitely don't know how condensor mics (I believe these are the mics that use Phatom Power) would be a better choice than a simple SM-58.
