What's the definitive Black Metal album?
What one record best represents the entirety of the genre?
...and why?

toggletoggle post by Josh_hates_you  at Feb 5,2005 1:06am
the one those guys wore gauntlets on that time.

toggletoggle post by malettey  at Feb 5,2005 1:26am
either Venom's "welcome to hell" or "black metal". these records started it all, and influenced every extreme metal band from metallica to mayhem and everyone in between.

toggletoggle post by thegreatspaldino   at Feb 5,2005 1:29am edited Feb 5,2005 1:29am
the Living Colour greatest hits album is the most definitive black metal album ever.

toggletoggle post by hoser at Feb 5,2005 2:04am
Josey Wales and the Gunslingers rule the Black Metal underworld!!!!

toggletoggle post by dyingmuse   at Feb 5,2005 2:09am
well if its modern black metal, i would have to say in the nightside eclipse for me. otherwise venom welcome to hell, at war with satan....black metal! even mercyful fate's don't break the oath

Darkthrone-A Blaze in the Northern Sky (even if I wasn't drunk)

toggletoggle post by thegreatspaldino   at Feb 5,2005 3:31am
fuck you.. its all about Angel Witch

toggletoggle post by th3rdknuckle at Feb 5,2005 10:18am
not 'first' black metal album
not 'original'
not 'best'
not 'my favorite'

so venom, angel witch and mercyful fate are out (besides, i already have all that stuff)

hot cocks? are they on Century Media?

interesting, the new issue of 'Terrorizer' covers this exact topic in a 'BM History' feature. (a mag I highly recommend anyways, it's like reading Kerrang! or even Metal Forces when they mattered)

Venom's 'Black Metal' is indeed the first, not only because they can poop on a plate and I'd still buy it (if Cronos was in the lineup), but because of the overly Satanic/horror delivery and eerie thick guitar sound.

but I would say MY vote for definitive BM release is Bathory, 'Under the Sign of the Black Mark'. I little more consistent than Mayhem's 'Dom Mysteriis...', Quorthon's then-voice, the guitar sound, the ambient keyboard intros to almost every song, and of course the fucked-up blasting make UTSOTBM my top choice. When I first heard it in '86, there was nothing else like it out there. R.I.P. Quorthon, and long live BLACK FUCKING METAL.

time for more caffeine, heh

toggletoggle post by silky  at Feb 5,2005 11:26am
emeror's "anthems to the welkin at dusk". That album is a fucking masterpiece. It's evil as fuck, and more sophisticated than any other BM album before or since. On the other hand, there might not be any black metal at all without bathory's "under the sign of the black mark".

Venom Black metal it Started Everyting

toggletoggle post by anonymous at Feb 5,2005 4:41pm
Burzum- Aske. The Black metal scene wouldn't exist if varg hadn't been inspired by bathory and venom but this album reignited black metal. ( No pun intended)

toggletoggle post by Ninkaszi187   at Feb 5,2005 5:35pm
how did venom "black metal" start everything when "welcome to hell" came out first?

if anything "welcome to hell" is the starting point and it's the better of the two albums in my view.

toggletoggle post by KillerKadoogan   at Feb 5,2005 5:44pm
i thought i was the only one who liked welcome to hell more...

if you want to talk about what 'started it all' (which I didn't; i asked for opinions on the definitive black metal album, not the first), then the first seven minutes of Black Sabbath's debut would be it...

toggletoggle post by MASlayer at Feb 5,2005 6:12pm
I guess it's all a matter of opinion because while there are tons of copycats, there are tons of original and unique artists under the black metal banner..some titles I would recommend...

Immortal - any
Profanum - Eminence of Satanic Imperial Art
Averse Sefira - Battle's Clarion (i don't care if it seems biased)
Black Witchery -any
Krieg - any
Thy Primordial - any
Noctuary - When Fires Breed Blood (see Averse Sefira)

I mean...do you like raw? Epic? Symphonic? Avnte garde? There's soooooooooo much Bob...check out some mp3's would be the best suggestion I could give because only you know what you're going to like

toggletoggle post by AUTOPSY_666   at Feb 5,2005 6:26pm edited Feb 5,2005 6:28pm
I have been around since before the 2nd wave of BM kicked in and DARKTHRONE - A Blaze In The Northern Sky is what kicked it off, not BURZUM.

that's an adroit insight bob, I'd have to agree with you on that

Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss, basically all of the Burzum Catalog, Filsofem is great too
Graveland - The Celtic Winter
Profantica/Havovej

toggletoggle post by Carcinogenic_Cookies  at Feb 6,2005 4:20am
Died after soulside? No way. Watching the video footage on the "Blaze" album explains it perfectly. Although I do like the fact that most classic BM bands started out as DM.

WHAT THE FUCK ABOUT ABRUPTUM?

toggletoggle post by Carcinogenic_Cookies  at Feb 6,2005 12:37pm
BUMP FOR ABRUPTUM (sorry, I'm passionate on the subject)

id def agree that venom and bathory started it all....Von was a big influence on Burzum i think varg mentioned them in a interview in lords of choas...i think the best Dark throne album is under a funeral moon. that album is pure black evilness. some of the best albums in my opinion are...

Dark throne-under a funeral moon
Von-satanic blood
Beherit-the oath of black blood
Impaled Nazaren-Toll cormp norz norz norz
MoonBlood-taste are german steel
Nargaroth-fuck off now-a-days black metal
Burzum-Aske

the list could go on and on

Slayer... "Show No Mercy". I see this as a black metal record.
Emperor...Nightside Eclipse. Hypnotizing black metal. Totally spellbinding.
Gorgoroth..."Pentegram". Text book black metal. Pefectly executed grimness... Evil.
Impaled Nazarene...Tol Compt Norz Norz Norz. Perverse and disturbing evil fucking record. The vocals are crude and horrifying...
Mayhem...De Mysteris... Reminds me of Transylvania covered in fog. Ominous and foreboding.
Blasphemy..."Gods of War"...Satanic Barbarism. Crude, raw, and brutally evil.
Dark Throne...Blaze in Northern Sky. Grim Grim Grim.
Burzum... all. This guy is a true artist. His music paints pictures of a past forgot. Ancient ways.
Deicide...Legion. People call it death metal but I disagree. FUCKING PURE EVIL!!!!

toggletoggle post by coldnorthernvengeance  at Feb 6,2005 11:02pm
I forgot Immortal...Diabolical Full Moon Mysticism. Occultic snowstorm standing round a drunken fire.

toggletoggle post by projectilevomit  at Feb 7,2005 12:59am
ildjan is fuckin harsh as well. The music is so minimal but it has so much anger to it...

toggletoggle post by coldnorthernvengeance  at Feb 7,2005 2:36am
Ildjarn is good Pagan black metal... I agree to some extent.
