what was the 1st 'metal' album?
raging debate here at work
just 'heavy metal'; not all broken down into those crazy-ass sub-genres

I always thought that it was BLACK SABBATH "Black Sabbath" but I have read that BLUE CHEER, STEPPENWOLF and MC5 were earlier.

right on, er... gaybutt. Blue Cheer's 'Vincebus Eruptum' gets my vote
over a year before Sabbath's 1st, and it makes Zeppelin sound like...gaybutts.

Not the first, but the first couple of Blue Oyster Cult records kick ass, also Bang were cooler than Sabbath, and from America. Sir Lord Baltimore were as fast as Slayer in 1971, and Dust(featuring Marky Ramone) we're heavy as fuck. the Scorpions early 70's shit rules.I guess you can call Vincebus Eruptum metal, but they didn't really get heavy until New, Improved, Blue Cheer with Randy Holden. I'm such a dork.

I agree with you on BOC; disagree on Bang (they were good, but 'cooler than Sabbath'?), and agree on Dust, even though their 2nd lp was kind of a mixed bag. And Leigh Stephens kicks Randy Holden's ass.

'Led Zeppelin 1' was the first metal album like 'Halloween' was the first horror movie

i don't consider anything like led zepp, boc, blue cheer, etc metal. black sabbath was the first in my eyes.
