What is indie-metal even?

Since you didn't list any bands I googled and found reddit's description:
Indie Metal: Isis, Gojira, Chimaira, Mastodon, Pelican, Wolves in the Throne Room, Woe, Cult of Luna,

I don't get it, "indie" means not belonging to or affiliated with a major record or film company. As far as I know, those are all pretty well-known bands signed to bigger labels. They also don't sound that similar besides being in the larger heavy music phylum.

The definition I tried to come up with doesn't make sense, so how do you define Indie-metal, and what about it has you so pissed off?
