I loved the Lotr movies and am partial to real-props as well, but I thought the CGI was excellent for the most part. My only real complaints are that sometimes gollum looked too fake, the Oliphants were ok (but the legolas scene where he destroyed one was a joke), and some of the cgi in general looked Meh. But overall, they nailed Hobbiton and Minas Tirith, Helms Deep, etc. Everything looked great. Also, keep in mind the CGI used in the movies is 10 years old now.
