My snare is in an skb case, and it does NOT move around when i tip it back and fourth. There isn't any play inside it, i tested it last night. BUT maybe i'm just "stupid".
The lining inside the cases makes it hard for the drum to move around too much and doesn't determine whether a drum with a different depth would or would not fit. An actual way to measure that would be to TAKE A RULER and measure from the top hoop to the top of the case.
If there is extra space, a deeper drum WILL FIT. If there isn't, then you don't have the case you think you have. I use a 4x14 SKB for my 5x14 snare, BTW. And a 12x14 SKB for my 14x14 floor tom. And an 8x12 SKB for my 9x12 rack tom.
