if kenny g got ahold of the bass that manring uses to play his music, then he could make the same music. manring is a bag of cool technique, shaken, and dumped out on your cosby sweater wearing commercial jazz table top. fuck that shit. a very cool player, but a player who wouldn't exist if jaco hadn't done everything michael manring did 20 years earlier. jaco is even credited with inventing the instrument known as fretless electric bass which manring is famous for playing. the electric bass would have stopped evolving at stanley clark and larry graham with out jaco. call that a "+1" if you really hate jaco, but you'd have no bunny brunel, victor wooten, les claypool, or michael "white man jazz perm" manring without jaco pastorius.
