I dunno about that. I have a feeling he was just so used to her day-to-day obliviousness that he actually started to underestimate how dense she would be, like "Yeah she DOES get distracted by keys and shiny objects, but there's no way in hell this hasn't sunk into her by now that I'm gonna be backpacking in Europe for two weeks." I've seen this happen a number of times and the dude alwaysa gets blown away by the girl's new found levels of "derrr"
