The Weekly Dig
RAZORMAZE | THE TRUE SPEED OF STEEL
By DANIEL LUCAS

In the mythology of metal, thrash is the equivalent of the Germanic Thor. A progeny of the original gods, thrash is equipped with the proverbial hammer/guitar Mjölnir, and twin goats/bass drums Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjóstr. Razormaze pulls no punches when battling its giants, whether it's with the straight-pummeling speed of "Annihilator," the growling vocals of "Bleed on Command" or the multiple shifts in tempo on "Desperado." What sets Razormaze apart is their army-like vocal refrains, when the whole band (and I assume some friends and audience members) joins in the chant. Such tactics are most effective on the climactic closing track, "Slave to the Maze"—"You're nothing more than just a peon in this place," singer Alex Citrone belts out. "You're nothing more than just a slave," he sings before diving into a crowd chanting "Slave to the maze!" Moments later, a coda keeps the intensity pressure-packed. Throughout True Speed, Razormaze guns the thrash metal machine, bearing down like our mythical hammer-bearer. Jörmungandr best watch its back.
