my conspiracy theory of the day goes like this:

1) the US's chief competition and threat in the next two decades is China
2) China has spent the last 15 years establishing a foothold in Africa
3) Since the economies of China and India have improved, it is now costing corporations more money to outsource to Asia
4) Africa is the next largest source of cheap labor. The amount of skilled workers on the continent is growing every year.
5) Africa is filled with untapped natural resources (re: oil)
6) Since China has already blocked US expansion in Africa in several key countries, the US needs a way to win back territories for US corporations to exploit
7) What better way to win the hearts and minds of a continent than have the son of a Kenyan immigrant become president of the most powerful country in the world?
8) The powers that be set things up so that Obama would win to make sure that the United States had a strong position in Africa to counter balance the threat posed by China
