I'd argue that some of their beliefs correlate to the romanticized ideals of certain classic Black Metal artists. A longing to return to a more pastoral existence, where man is living more in accordance with nature. Though they are opposed to NS ideology and discrimination, they seem more like separatists; dropping out of society to live on a farm, rejecting excessive materialism and utilizing only what they need to get by. That's just what I've gathered from a few interviews I've read, and I could be wrong. I also know exactly what you're saying about image, and I'm not discarding it's significance. But there are plenty of bands who dress the part, and their music has absolutely no substance. I appreciate the more esoteric aspects that some Black Metal bands promote (Deathspell Omega, anyone?), as opposed to writing lyrics about mutilating whores, rocking out for Satan, and how many spikes they can fit on their gauntlets.
