I used to think it was pronounced that way too....When I was SIX.

I didn't even know what "nigger" meant. I saw Niger on a globe and thought it was pronounced nigger. I thought nigger was a really funny sounding word and proceeded to call my little brother a nigger, right in front of my mother. She then told me what nigger means.
