My old band used to attack our audience all the time. Mic stands, chairs, cinder blocks, and various other heavy objects were all thrown at people. The difference was that our crowd not only was cool with that, they expected it. People would ask our singer to autograph things they'd been hit with. I guess my point is, don't attack your audience if your audience is a bunch of pussies who like bands like On Broken Wings.
