im not sure what you mean by "getting better," as "better" is a tough qualification to back up with data, but I do know that conservation, i.e. the preservation of biodiversity, is important given recent trends in population loss and species loss of various plants and animals.

I think that you are right on one aspect: the preservation of biodiversity is essential to the sustainability of all living organisms on this planet and requires positive, constructive action, not a guilt-ridden, doomsday mentality.
