The reason people don't listen to extreme metal because it's extreme, it's hard to listen to. granted, that may be in part cultural (i find arabic nose flute music really irritating, they don't), however, the entire driving force behind metal is to be "in your face" and abrasive, an aural "fuck you." As to your assumption, being told to like numetal is way cooler than being German and told to like David Hasslehoff.
